I've been using it since October and absolutely love it. I use it for low light sports and surfing and get incredible images at iso 6400 with fast shutter speeds. The only thing that bugs me is I can't go up to 1/8000th of a second on those really bright days. Beyond that it's perfect and matches the images of my buddy's D4
Nice review Matt. I like when you mentioned the V1's (I have one) focusing ability. It really is quite amazing at getting things in focus quickly and it doesn't matter where your subject is. +1 for Tina being on your video again.
I've been using it since October and love it. No dusts issues with me. Sure, it's more stripped down than the 800, but you're saving a thousand bucks on mostly things you will never use. It takes photos very well, with very little noise.
That's why I bought a Fuji XS1! It's not really mentioned much, but it's SO much bigger and brighter than your average DSLR,which seem positively dim by comparison! And it's better in lowlight, and you see any picture adjustments you make on the actual image,BEFORE you take your picture!
A honest, well specified review from a professional in touch with a prosumer/enthusiast audience. As an addendum I would like to know of you found any oil/debris problems?Lastly what travel lens would you pair this body with? Best Alan New Mexico USA
Great review Matt. Have been pondering this as a purchase at some point in the future, seems like a logical step if I do want to go full frame and hopefully the AF wouldn't be an issue. What do you think would be the biggest noticeable difference between this and the D90 or D7000?
Thanks for this video. I'm currently thinking about this camera. I do like all the goodies the D800 has, but the 36MP are just too much for me. So the next in line is this one. Looking forward to see more about it on your channel. I know there is a big thing about dust on the sensor in the net, but did you notice it as well?
Nikon has been amazing at positioning its DSLR offerings. As a Canon user I suspect I'd go for 5DmkIII for upgrade. For an entry level full frame DSLR shooter the Nikon D600 seems likable frigging amazing deal and D800 is a pretty nice deal to if you got the money.
If I had the dosh and was considering the Nikon D600 then FOR ME the missing features like WiFi and GPS are not a big issue. I think the D600 largely has what most people in its target bracket need. As for the central grouping of the AF points, the AF system is taken from the D7000 and rammed into the D600. I would assume it was to keep costs down, and because putting the AF system from the D4 and D800 into the D600 would eat into the sales of those higher end models.
Matt -where do you stand on the focus and recompose technique. I seem to find it works on my D7000 but I'm not a pro. I'd love to hear your thoughts please. Regards Chris PS: is this 'rugged' thing really all it's cracked up to be, my old D40 has taken a bit of a battering over the years. It has flown around the passenger foot well of a car and been dropped on several occasions but shows no signs of damage. What do you pros do to your cameras anyway :-) ?
Hi Matt, Comparing to d700, which camera has the biggest viewfinder? I'm looking forward to move to fx since my d7000 viewfinder is quite small. Many thans, Matt.
Quick question. You know how your shutter speed should be at least your focal length so at 200mm your shutter should be at least 1/200th hand held without VR. If you but that lens on a cropped body do you need to increase your shutter speed to 1/300? You arent zooming in more you are only cropping the frame so does it remain at 1/200th? Thanks
Nikon pays for the shipping of the d600 for sensor cleaning, within warranty. I suggest send it to Nikon the first time as they will replace the shutter, and then if the problem occurs do it yourself..
Dust is a non-issue. I reviewed this camera on my blog and really tried to find it. It does show up but only under weird circumstances like shooting a blank wall. Also, it's been recently discovered that this issue resolves itself after 3,000 exposures. Probably some lingering dust particles from the factory. Let me know if you want to see the post.
The Wi-Fi adapter here in the US is only $60. But I would much rather have a flash that can act as a commander, I find that much more useful than Wi-Fi.
Have them both d600 has better image quality by far, lighter, iso superior, (sensor I clean myself - takes a couple of weeks shipping to nikon), hd video d700 slightly better controls af-on and ok button which I rearly used anyway, and can live without them, and better built quality. The only 'major' difference is the focus points, but not that big of a difference (it is better then 5d mk2 and not many complained about it) Take it like this no complaints from d600 owners, plenty of d800 (files)
You know, it's a wonder to me why even the Sony NEX has a very flexible auto-focus point system while a lot of the DSLRs are typically clumped in the middle.
It does well up to about 2000 ISO. 3200...well...it's descent. Higher than that, well...it's up to the user to decide if they are good enough. The d610 (d600 isn't really on the market anymore), does very well at 3200 and still does well at 6400.
Nikon Vs Canon, like watching the V8 supercars all over again. Would be good to see a real life comparison between the d600 and 6d as opposed to pictures of charts.
Thank you for going fast. Slow reviewers, even famous photographers, does drives me crazy. People do videos and talk too slowly. Anyone looking at fx cameras already can follow things as fast as you can explain it. Curiously, why is this not a pro camera? It has a headphones out. Again, thanks for going quick.
I probably sound like one of those guys that doesn't understand the desire for video in a DSLR (which I desire) but I dont see much point of GPS other than as an accessory gadget. And it should be a cheap accessory at that. I'll probably buy one of these in the next 6mths and I have to say I'm surprised it's now 3 or 4 Nikon full frame cameras with on board commander flash to none from Canon. Also 2:42 a potential weak point the D800 also has.
This camera would be in my bag right now if it weren't for the af spread. Shot with it for a weekend a it totally killed the camera for me. Beautiful sensor though.
Surely you can learn how to clean a sensor, never heard of anyone braking it... search for this vid here on YT 'The Wet Method of Cleaning a Digital SLR Sensor'. And use 'Dust-Aid Dust Wand Kit' - Tom Hogans favourite...
I own a D600 now for a few months and I must say I am really loving it !
Nice Review.

it's a big issue for me the focus points.. but hey i still have it in my bag. lock and recompose, that's the name of the game.
That's why I bought a Fuji XS1!

Your companion is absolutely stunning. How lucky to have her and a great camera too.
no dust problems at 1000 images !! awesome camera

Man the model in this video is gorgeous!!!!

Hey Matt, I noticed most of the sample shots were underexposed. Was this done on purpose? Were any semi-auto modes used for the shots?
This video needs more Tina!

D610 being announced soon. Supposedly fixes the oily sensor issue.
What lens and lens hood do you have on the d600 at 3 mins 17 seconds? Also what would your top 3 lenses be for use with this camera?
new buyers, i bought from amazon last thursday (04/18/2013), got a 307x serial and no dust issues after 600 shots.
Very good camera, very beauty model!

even though I am going to invest more on Lens, I am still debating on D7000 or D600. Another nice camera is the Canon 5D Mark III.
whats your thoughts about the dust on the sensor is it the matter of worry?...
great review. thanks.
Can you do also a review for the Sony A99?
Do you think there is room for another model between D600 and D800? Maybe a true replacement for D700
Matt, any update on the sensor dust/oil issue?

Hello. What lens was used in this video?
YAAAAAY KAI!!!!!!!!!
Well D600? or D7100.. like the D7100.. but does it do well on ISO 3200?

Probably, I love the D700, if they do, I want 6-8 Fps, 51 focus points (Corner to Corner) Price $3000
It looks like you intentionally left out the D700 in terms of comparison. Just curious to know how it stacks up to that model.
Would a Nikon flash work on a Canon camera?
what camera u used in this vedio ?
my take is d700 for professional use

if you have a lenses that are high quality, go to the D600, and even if you don't the money you saved on the d600, you can get a nice prime
Beautiful photos, Tina doesn't hurt either
Props for the Kai shootout haha
Matt, GPS and WIFI arent expensive on this one!! It has a 50€ WIFI adapter and it uses the 200€ GP-1 or something. Nothing too expensive.
I've played with d600 call me crazy but I rather the d7000 steady the focus points cover the frame
How about now?
high ISO vs D800?
And vs D4...
Good video :-)
We went years without a new FX camera, 2012 was just catching up.
This camera would be in my bag right now if it weren't for the af spread. Shot with it for a weekend a it totally killed the camera for me. Beautiful sensor though.
Ref wifi and GPS u can get an 8GB eyefi card for under $100
6D only has 1 crosstype and 1 sd slot and 97pct viewfinder!
4:24 - Digitalrev TV reference :P
You have your own Alamby. LOL. Nice job.
Canon 5D Mark III.

"Thanks Kai" Haha !
FX vs DX
Tiny central grouping of AF points is this camera's weakest point in my eyes. So, so appealing in most all other regards.
Nikon shouldn't have rushed it. They just need to fix all the problems and rename it :-)
D800 vs D600 :)
Very nice review indeed! Take a look at photos taken with the D600 www.flickr.com/photos/127428584@N07
