The 2012-2013 was a great period for full frame cameras.

Also the iso / video / things changed so much back then, and nowadays they dont. Im getting a d610 today bc colors and most of things are same as newer cameras, and sometimes better colors. 900$ for a d610+grip+bag+ alot of other things in adorama

Chris, thank you for this vid. I've been using my D800 (which I LOVE) for my weddings and a D300 as a back up. I finally decided to upgrade my D300 and I WAS going to get a 2nd D800, but now.....after listening to all of your points.....I think I'll save the money and go with the D600. I've been agonizing over this decision for weeks and you helped push me over the edge. THANKS!!! **Subscribed**

SUPER review. Covered A LOT of details. He had a GREAT knowledge of this camera! I just purchased the D600 and absolutely love it compared to my old D7000. Has many little improvements and some BIG ones too. I went from the D90 to D7000 to D600 and this is truly the best!!! My favorite is the ISO range is WOW!!!!!! I recommend you buy the D600!!!

Thanks for it :) And also glad you pointed out those important points in your review about the buffer size, aperture selection during live video, the lack of a PC sync although correctable with the AS-15, the 1/4000 even though one can use the native ISO 100 on it and the use of ND filters, etc. Thans!

Thanks man! Appreciate your comment, I can't afford to have both of them, as Chris mentioned the D600 body is magnesium alloy top, bottom and back but not the front however Nikon claims that it is weathers sealed, not sure if it's built to meet the rigid body of a D700.

If resolution is not important, you'll appreciate the improved dynamic range over your D700. It's tough to test, but I'd still consider the D700 to be the more durable body, the the D600 only has magnesium at the top and base plate.

I consider the D600 a Nikon classic. 24MP futureproofs. Has every feature. Is relatively small, "shootable". Is a great bargain too due to overblown oil spot issue. (Only affected early production runs, Nikon fixed for free for, like, a decade. Only recently stopped in 2021). I bought 2 bodies four years ago for the price of a new APS-C Fuji (or Sony). You can't beat full frame. The larger image plane is overlooked by TH-cam yappers. It is IQ critical. Not for noise. For 3D pop and depth perception. There is a reason why portrait and pro photogs used medium format and fine arts landscape photogs shot large format. But shhhhh! Camera makers want you to keep paying a grand for cams with tiny sensors, since semi-conductors of this size are prohibitively expensive.

great review! one thing that was not mentioned that probably is important is that there are only 9 cross type autofocus points, sensitive to max aperture of F/5.6. There isn't a center cross type sensitive to F/4 or F/2.8 lenses so people should be aware that 0 of the AF points will have cross type accuracy for F/4 or faster lenses.

The BEST review of this camera, but all your reviews are fantastic. Crazy I know, but I had been saving forever to upgrade from D90 and got tired of waiting for the D800, so I bought a new D700 and used 28-70 f2.8 with the 3 grand I saved. I sort of regret it now, but I needed a new camera because I had weddings coming. I hope it wasn't that big of a mistake. ISO is a huge concern to me and I never take the 700 over about 4000 or so. Most my shooting seems to be in available darkness.

  • @sultanabran1
    @sultanabran1 12 ปีที่แล้ว

i have a d600. yes the af points are clustered in the middle, but it's not something that you really notice as being a problem. in some situations yes, but generally it's not a problem. bare in mind a d800 would load your card up very very very fast. there's a reason why the d4 has less mp. the d800 is aimed at a specific type of shooting.

    Very nice macro image. :)
Gotta say Chris looked pretty darn happy with the D600. haha
The Nikon D800 is a bit pricey but considering what you're getting the price is actually quite good. But with the D600, which retains much of the D800's features and tech, you are getting a bargain at US$2099, although for us Aussies $2688 is a little bit steep. heh But yeah, what a great camera. I am DEFINITELY buying the D600.

One thing that could be added to this video is that the D600 will allow you to switch to DX mode to take advantage of both DX and FX formats. There is an absolutely gorgeous video that two brothers made with the D600; have a look on TH-cam for "Nikon D600 movie chasing the light." You won't be disappointed that you watched it. Actually, that's where I got my info about the DX mode. Highly recommended viewing.

christopher, you are right . it is a d700 in full frame form. it just goes to show that it is easily one of the best cameras nikon has made. for those of us that are not full time professionals or minted, the 600 is a good choice. however, i would say wait for the third batch. an associate of mine went back to using his d7000 for the moment - bothersome dust..

Chris, excellent review, as usual. In fact probably your best review. However, what are you doing testing high ISO in the middle of a sunny day? You know very well it will look fine on even most m43 cameras. You need to test it where it matters, at night in low light, to really see what low light ISO behavior is. Which you did before with D800 and other cameras. Other than that, fantastic review, thank you. I share your comments about D800's slow AF response, sold it off and got 5DM3!

  • @Tim.Pierce

sounds like a great camera and I'm looking to purchase this over the D800...while Nikon didn't cripple the D600 much and skimp on great features which is a relief, the aperture lockup in live view is a bummer mm wonder if you can do the aperture in manual mode during live view... thanks for great review Chris ;-)

The aperture control in liveview will NOT be fixes in a firmware update!!
it's due to the fact that the control of the f-stop is not a problem of software, but actually hardware. Keep in mind, D600 is aim to be light and small, so the design of all the hardware like shutter etc are totally different comparing to D800 and D4. Controlling the f-stop is not as easy as you think, this feature have been taken because of SIZE.
P.s D4 & D800 are made in Japan, while D600 is made in Thailand

Great review ! Best & most detailed Yet, that I've seen. For me it looks like a great entry into FF shooting. I'll wait a few months for prices to come down a bit. Hopefully when Cannon get the 6D out there, Nikon will reduce their "premium" a bit. It's $2,100 in the US but seems to be around $ 2,400 to $2,500 just about everywhere else in the World !
