  • Donald Lambert plays Gershwin's "Liza" at the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival. Unfortunately the pitch of the audio is about a half-step too high.

I LOVE that the cameraperson got shots of the audience reaction... this is priceless because it gives you a real "feel" for the times, and basically the way a large sampling of people reacted to this kind of music back then. Judging from the applause, a lot of them dug it!

OH MAN! This is real cutting-contest piano for sure!
Forget what they say on Mythbusters... EVERYBODY who plays piano should be trying THIS at home!!!

Just look at that. Did anyone ever swing as damned hard as this in the history of the world? You could build a city on that left hand it's so firm.

I wonder if this was the piece which Tatum and Lambert challenged each other with. It seems obvious that Lambert is trying to showcase his stride here. And if you listen to Tatum's recording, he himself also plays extremely fast there.

He plays very quickly, seemingly quicker than james p. johnson, fats waller and willie the lion smith.

not saying donald lambert wasn't genius. I AM however, saying that Tatum's genius is unparalleled.

Hmmm sincere apologies to those who commented on this with praise, but I find this version positively awful. There is no subtlety, no actual plot or direction to it. He just keeps smashing the keys with his left hand and that's all, but that's the easiest part of stride piano. Lambert was left handed and it really shows here, his right hand is all messy, dirty and doesn't really develop any theme or phrases. Comparing this to James P. Johnson's superb 1937 version is like comparing McDonald's to a dinner prepared by a 3-star Michelin chef.

Really high-quality audio of this entire concert / performance can be found here. This particular performance can be found as track 18. Would be nice if someone could take that audio and match with this video:
