Hello Maarten, in three minutes not only you explain how to set the camera for video and sound, but also give tips on how to communicate and/or come across. Amazing, I can’t even tie my shoes in three minutes (LOL). Great video. Rick.
Have recently purchased one of these cameras (UK) and have found after trawling the youtube videos for hints and tips (as this camera is far too advanced for me - but am intending to stick with it) that your tutorials are by far the best i have come across, I love the way you not only explain what does what but you also show how to do it too, I only wish you had more for me on the FZ300/330 - Great stuff though Maarten - thankyou !
Creative Video Mode is only good when you're filming yourself. If you're doing a vlog where you film other people or objects (say, you're on the street), you better leave it in the default Intelligent Auto mode. Why? Because when you switch to Creative Video, the focus mode automatically switches to AF-S. The camera will NOT act as camcorder and you'd have to manually adjust focus (by half-pressing the shutter button, or touching a spot on the screen). I switched the Focus selector on the back to AF-C, and the camera mode to Full Auto, and everything is sharp no matter where I point the camera.
+Sergei Dratchev (Heavy Haul TV) Thanks for the comment, and the suggestions. Personally, I would only shoot video in CVM - as it lets me control the shutter speed, and deal with the focus as you suggest. Otherwise, good suggestion, always appreciate the conversation.
Great video Maarten. I've always been a Sony guy, but every time I hear "Touch the screen to focus" it reminds me of what I've been missing for so many years. BTW, was that you singing and playing in the background at 2:10? :-)
+ForViewingOnly Thanks for the kind words - I'd just said about the same thing in my Canon T6S review. If by "singing and playing" you mean creating loud noise in the background to make the audio meter move, then yes.
+Maarten Heilbron Hah hah, I was thinking of putting "singing and playing" in quotation marks to indicate I didn't mean it in the conventional sense :-)
Cheers Mate, just stepped up from YouTubing on a Galaxy S7 for the past year and one of my mates (The Wood Knight) put me on to you to help set up my new hardware. Very clear and concise. It's a lot of camera for the price even a few years on, looking forward to having a good fiddle with it but this was a great starting point 👍
Thanks a lot for this. Watching in 2024, and I love the FZ300. This helps me to get started shooting video. What are the best settings to get a clear shot in a dark room with low light where you should barely see the background? I only use an LED ring light, but the background is still too bright. And if I use less light, my face is too dark.
The camera has no fix for this kind of situation. You could try positioning the light (higher? to the side?) so that the background isn't illuminated, or find a location where the background is farther away. You could also try using a dark curtain or backdrop.
In some regions (those where 25Hz is the AC standard) cameras did not support frame rates that are not multiples of 25. Those in areas where 30Hz is standard will support multiples of 30.
I have a few questions regarding your tips: 1) why you suggest SDXC U3 is best for 4K? I have SDXC U1, is there any significant difference between those two? 2) Why you recommend 30p rec quality for 4K? My FZ300 lets me only record in 4K, 100M, 25p, is it because of the memory card?
I have a few answers: 1) The difference between U1 and U3 is not material for this camera, even when recording 4K. 2) Because in North America, all screens display at 30 (or 60) frames. If your camera only shows 25 frame modes, it's set to PAL instead of NTSC (the North American standard). If you are shooting in PAL, I'd recommend 25 frames, but it's worth considering 50 as 25 is slightly jittery. The NTSC/PAL setting is a factory setting and can't be changed in camera (as far as I know - or at least the NA version of the camera). Hope this helps.
Hi, nice video. I recently bought this Panasonic fz300 camera. But I found on the lens, 3-4 mm from the edge of the lens, a scratch, about 1 mm, the thickness of a needle tip! Can it affect my photos or movies, condensation ..., are there other things like that? Thanks.
Hi again Maarten. Is there a way to stabilization or off on the fz300 in settings? I recorded motion car footage while on a window stabilizer but my shots all come out wavy and glichy. Side driver-side shots and driver pov/front shots, looking straight ahead.
Hi Maarten. I don't think it's rolling shutter. The video appears to be floating and not stable. It's swaying from side to side lol. I don't think it was meant for getting motion shots.
Do you have a tutorial for video settings while using this camera outdoors for wildlife photography? Birds in trees, etc. zoom required.......often very sunny conditions.......
Hi,Maarten! Thank you for this tutorial. It is very useful for me,especially that i'm new photography fan and not professional Why do we have to do this resets? My camera is fz 1000,but the menu is imilar as i see.. Can you tell me what is ideal setings for video shooting,please..
Glad to hear you found this video useful. I don't know and haven't used the FZ1000 - but if the menus are the same or similar my advice for this model is likely your best starting point.
I have the Nikon D5500 and the Canon G7X, but debating getting rid of both of them to get the Sony A6000, maybe the A5100 after watching your comparison... but this one looks good too. Mainly I want the fastest continuous autofocus that is silent with good quality. What camera would you pick Maarten? Cheers.
+Evan Brand What is it that you're trying to accomplish? I'm not sure there's a solution that provides all three that I'd be confident recommending. For my taste, all continuous autofocus systems are too easily fooled and distracted. Silence is over-rated, for many reasons, I'd recommend an external mic if that's an issue. What specific feature of the A600 attracts you? Both the D500 and G7X are highly capable, and for as much as I like the A6000 you may already be well equipped for most tasks.
I would not use different settings for B roll footage. My advice is general, for viewers who just need a quick guide to get started. Once you know what you're doing and have some experience, you may wish to experiment with alternate settings to get a look or feeling to suit your production.
I am sorry I am new to this. Will this camera let you do the shallow depth of field that people get with DSLR's and a low aperture? Also I saw you do the touch screen for the focus but will it follow your face and keep it in focus like the T6i/70d/80d?
No need to apologize. Yes, it will, but it's a little tricky because of the small sensor - zoom in and keep the subject close to the camera for best effect. Yes, in continuous it will follow an object or face.
I am working on a project and I need that shallow depth of filed look. I was about to go ahead and buy the G85 but I found this camera. It seems to me we are in a place where things are transitioning to 4k and soon to 6k with the new G5 coming out in early 2017. I hate to spend more money now then regret it in a few months as thing change. Maybe I am looking at it wrong but I thought this camera would get me thru to where I need to be with quality 4k video with a good lighting kit. Then see what things are around the corner and use this as a back up camera for traveling. I wish they made a camcorder with a better lens to get a shadow depth of field in a decent price range and not have the restriction of the 29 minute 59 second video length.
A camera with a larger sensor, like the G85, the G7 or the GH4 (just to throw out some Panasonic models - but Sony, Canon, Fuji and Nikon would also have good choices) will make it much simpler to get a defocussed background. So will buying a lens with a large (like F1.8) aperture. I would not be in too much of a future-proofing hurry with 4K or 6K until specific support for REC 2020 is provided. Of those, the GH4 (and I assume the GH5) does offer unlimited recording length. Otherwise consider a video camera - both Sony and Canon offer excellent choices, albeit not in this price range.
That is a low price point - typically at that price point you will have a small sensor. Consider one inch the minimum for a shallow depth of field. th-cam.com/video/aLlEMo3dgu8/w-d-xo.html Sony does make a video camera that takes e-mount lenses.
Is it possible to get that cinematic bokeh effect (shallow depth of field like DSLR) with this camera (while keeping camera close to person - selfie mode)?
+marcus Thanks for the kinds words, always appreciated. I'd go with the G7 as better, simply as it has a larger sensor. In low light, the FZ300 gets mushy pretty fast. Focus is approximately equal to the G7, didn't review the FZ100, so can't compare.
+Maarten Heilbron Hi, thanks for this review. Please can you help. I'm looking for a camera best for video indoors with good autofocus / tracking ability. I don't want to buy any lenses ever. I'm not interested in 4k. Just the best picture I can get at the price point. Is the G7 with the kit lens best choice? If I could achieve a quality like in the first 10 seconds of your video, I would be very happy. I am very confused by so many models and reviews on youtube GX7, GF7, G7 ?!
+DaveKarl It's my pleasure. Let me try. First, that opening shot is taken with the Sony A6000 - th-cam.com/video/hkBnze9wUQU/w-d-xo.html - it's one I own and can recommend. I don't remember that shot exactly, but the lens is probably the Sony 35mm F1.8, which is perfect for those kinds of scenes. However, audio support (no audio in, or level settings) is lacking - the audio for that scene was recorded on an external recorder and then matched in editing (lots of advantages to external recording, and not as difficult to match as it seems.) From the Panasonic lineup, I'd take the G7 with the 14-42 lens, but you will have to accept that it has 4K. :-) It's about as good a video camera as still models get. Hope this helps.
I have a problem when I put the camera in the movieM mode. The screen is completely dark and the only thing that lightens it up is bringing exposure or ISO all the way up. Any advice? Nice video.
It sounds like there is insufficient light where you are trying to record. I suggest you find a brighter location or purchase some lighting gear. Otherwise, if you have the shutter duration at 1/60 and the aperture open as far as possible, increasing the ISO is your only option.
Not yet. Will do. I am not at my camera at the moment, but is it possible to manually focus on two points? Lets say, one person is on the left and the other person is on the right, with something in between? (I appreciate your help. Thanks)
Hey, great Video. Im just wondering, how did you managed to record the screen of the fz300? Have you just put another camera behind the screen or did you got a method to get an hdmi signal out of there?
Hey I've found a SDXC U3 card that looks identical to the one in the video but the only difference is at the bottom it says "read 98 write 75 mb/s". Is that an issue? Is that better than the one in the video that you have? Yours says read 90 write 45 so just making sure.
@@MaartenHeilbron Ok thank you :) Also how long do you think I'd be able to get away with recording a 4k video for? Just bought the lumix fz300 so I'm new to everything lol
@@Jasmine-ve2gc The limit for a single clip is 30 minutes (less if you're using a small card, or if it's getting full) - the remaining time is displayed bottom right.
I have just gotten the FZ300, and I love the 4K video. However I seem to be having issues with the auto focus hunting more then I like. I zoom or pan and it will hunt for focus sometimes or not at all or be perfect and adjust. Am I missing something?
I am using video mode with every thing in default settings. It seems to hunt for focus with movement/zooming. I sometimes can't focus at all when zoomed in.
I bought this camera and on video playback the footage is wavy. Appears it has to do with lighting perhaps, happens on all creative video modes. The footage is worthless currently, any suggestions
I'm not sure what you mean by wavy - but if it has to do with lighting, then change the lighting. First turn off the fluorescent fixtures (which may be the cause), or shoot in a different location.
Maarten, I appreciate the reply. I loaded the footage to another laptop and the issue was gone. So unfortunately the laptop I use for editing might need an upgrade as the video card might not be good enough to edit now.
Ann Ricci Again !!! Could you give me a step by step on how to delete videos .... I did go in and tap each frame and deleted that way ... is this correct ???? Do you know the location of a downloadable instruction guide for the DMC-FZ300 ???? I appreciate the time you give to me ......PS: I think Panasonic should hire. you to do a verbal instruction guide !!!!
(Sorry about the delayed reply, for some reason this got stuck in TH-cam's spam filter) Yes, if you wish to delete them in camera, it's one at a time - however, I'd suggest that after you back them up to a computer (by copying ALL the files) that you then put the card back in the camera and format it - much safer, and eliminates the possibility of card corruption. You'll find the online manual here: ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/camera/om/dmc-fz300_en_om.pdf (There's also an advanced features one: ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/camera/om/dmc-fz300_en_adv_om.pdf And, as always, it's my pleasure - thanks for the kind words.
+Woodenarrows Thank you, I always appreciate my viewers kind words. I was thinking that (as this is kind of an "easy" project) I should just do this quick and easy HowTo for all cameras I review.
I have watched and re-watched this video and it is soooo helpful as I am new to youtube-ing...but I do have one major problem which I cannot seem to solve.... when I show test ... it comes out backwards...is there a setting on the camera that will record so that the words do not appear backwards .... I appreciate YOU !!!!
Thanks, I do appreciate your kind words. I'm having a little trouble understanding the problem. Is this a defect you're seeing when the monitor is flipped for vlogging, or is the text backwards when you play the recording?
I am sooo sorry.....I was trying to figure out this problem regarding the video on my Samsung S7 ...last night I did a video on my Lumix FZ300 and it is perfect ..... as long as I follow your instructions .... thank you again and I will be "watching" you !!!! ... Annie Lou
Those are all tasks that your phone, and this camera, can handle. However, if you are planning to take this seriously, you should consider a better camera.
Hi ! like your video. I just purchased this camera and tried to do my first volg. My display screen keeps timing out after a few minutes, it still records but I can't see myself on the screen while recording . My question is how do I get the display screen from going black during recording ?
+Maarten Heilbron I think that's a smart idea, almost everyone can use a head start, maybe even cameras u reviewed already too, maybe it can turn into a nice little series.
Hi Maarten. nice video. Am having difficulty w/ my fz300 getting the right skin tone. btw, what's your video settings to get that skin tone? i have GH2 /w 20mm f1.7 - i love the skin tone. its easy setup. Thanks in advance!
Oh. Panasonic's white balance is usually impeccable - but you may need to do a custom white balance, or make an adjustment to the colour/saturation settings for the colour profile you're using. I suspect, however, that the real problem you're having is with lighting.
Can somebody please tell me if this camera is better than an iPhone 10 as a daily vlogging camera. I have both of them but I just can’t help thinking that the iPhone is better. Even though this one is bigger, I just don’t know enough to know so with some camera knowledge I’m sure one of you could tell me why it is or it is not
It's not better enough to justify its price. If you're doing what you need with the iPhone, stick with it. When you realize you want a better video camera, you should probably get a higher quality camera.
I wouldn't lug both around unless you really saw the difference. I haven't seen them side by side, but suspect the decision might go to the iPhone for quality, the Panasonic for features/settings (but, of course, there's an app for that).
Oh. If you are at a fixed distance from the camera, use AFS. I didn't want to make the video too complicated, but you could also turn on face detect. Touching the screen on your face mostly works (but I have a face that often defies detection, particularly when wearing glasses.)
Maarten Heilbron indeed Maarten I can't get it bette. most Camera's have a perfect FHD in low light I never have seen this before.. It was sold to me that is was perfect in low light.. I should have know better.. I will by a different camera for filming.. To me a camera must give good HD in low and Good lichting. my smartphone make better HD movies in low light and the Chip is even smaller then in this camera
When i record It looks like a soft skin tone is on or something with my camera and I don't know how to turn it off so It can show my skin clearer without it being fuzzy or waxy, how do I fix this?
transferring videos/images from my fz300 onto my iphone 6plus is extremely slow. Creating my youtube videos is very tedious due to the extreme wait time on uploading. could it be my internet or is the camera processor just slow? I spent a lot of money at Henrys for it and if that's the reason, I will be extremely upset!!!please help!Thank youNanabian B
First, improve your transfer speed by using an SD Card reader, assuming your computer doesn't have an SD card slot. Long time rendering is due to your computer (please, get a Mac, it makes this whole video thing so much simpler), long time uploading is due to your internet service provider - or the package you've subscribed to. Whatever, it's not the camera.
Thank you so much 😊 . I am thinking of getting a Mac for sure! My internet speed might be the culprit as well. Phew I thought I made the wrong camera choice for my TH-cam videos! Thank you for your help! Nanabian B
Wow, didn't realize you were a fellow Torontonian, Maarten. Where is the best place to get the FZ300 for a good price? Amazon Canada has it for around $700.
When I'm shopping I typically use Aden to benchmark the price and then shop around at Henry's and Vistek - where I find it is possible to negotiate a better price, typically if you are also buying accessories. For video production equipment, DV Shop in the west end is very competitive. And Amazon, where I have bought electronic stuff but not cameras, is also an excellent choice. On Amazon, I tend to prefer the direct from Amazon rather than third parties using Amazon. Let's Go Jays!
Dear Just Curious: Excellent question. Simply put, in order to allow me to set a shutter speed of 1/30 to 1/60 so that motion looks smooth. I'm not sure if it's our inherited genetic code or visually learned cues that lead us to interpret motion from a series of still images projected or displayed - but this is essential for us to be able to watch film and video and see it as motion instead of a series of still images. In the early days of motion pictures, through trial and error, it was decided that 24 frames per second was the optimum frame rate for viewers to perceive continuous motion. The need to move and stop a frame in the camera gate, and the cost of stock were limiting factors. Although a faster frame rate might have been better, it would come at a cost in film stock. In order to move the film to the next frame, the shutter needed to be closed for a period of time, trial and error arrived at a 180 degree shutter (although others were used, and in some cameras it was adjustable). In film cameras, the shutter is a rotating disc in front of the film gate. At 24 frames per second, a 180 degree shutter (meaning it blocks light for 1/2 its rotation) provides a 1/48 shutter speed, which results in a certain amount of motion blur for moving objects. Again, genetic code and/or visual learning has taught us that a certain amount of motion blur is required for movement to look smooth, and the 1/48th shutter seemed to be right. You may not be able to discern this as such, but you will certainly be able to determine that something's not right if the shutter is materially faster. The images are too "still" and the motion doesn't look continuous. As a result, when we watch a movie or video, we expect (or have learned to expect) a certain amount of motion blur. In order to get the right amount of motion blur, experienced video (and film) shooters set the shutter speed at a predetermined setting - typically 1/30th to 1/60th of a second. Then set the aperture to get the desired depth of field, then set the ISO (or gain) to expose the scene properly. It's worth noting that in bright sunlight many cameras/lenses can't either close the iris sufficiently even with the lowest ISO to expose properly. As a result, if shooting outside, I always have an ND filter to assist with the exposure. I hope this helps.
+Maarten Heilbron great information!! i would just like to use this camera as a camcorder with no blur at all. and i noticed setting it at 1/60 or 1/30 does eliminate the blur. I usually like to upclose on the certain object but not including with the blur background.
I'm sorry if I didn't make the distinction between motion blur (the effect of shutter speed) and depth of field (background blur) clear. At those shutter speeds, the camera is closing the iris to compensate for the slow shutter speed, which results in larger depth of field and less background blur. You'll need an ND filter to open the iris, decrease the depth of field and recover the background blur. Hope this helps.
I am asking about LUMIX DMC-FZ300...I do not see any stop button to pause video. There is one RED button that only work as START/STOP the video recoding but NOT for PAUSE video. Same way work click button that's inside the zoom ring.... please shed some more light.
That will be because in some countries the standard frame rate is 25 frames per second. The FZ300 does not have an NTSC/PAL switch to change to a 30 frame mode. In this case, I would suggest that you use 25 or 50.
Thanks for the very helpful and speedy video with suggested video settings for my Panasonic FZ200 camera. Otherwise I would have to flounder around and experiment with settings.
Best youtube video. But, i´m not liking panasonic quality of video, not in FZ1000 and not in FZ300...when there is action they blur, artifacts or whatever one calls it, come up, there is no consistent focusing in FZ1000 for sure (no idea in FZ300, but still, Ive seen a horrible video of girls playing soccer...the legs looked pixeled the whole time they were moving). Can´t have that, I´m filming rugby matches so they clearly see how they are playing... none of this happens... Would you recommend a camera with at least 16X zoom that will do the job in low light too?
That is very kind of you to say, I certainly appreciate that. The issue with the FZ300 is the sensor size, which is particularly noticeable in low light situations. The Sony RX10m3 th-cam.com/video/9A0tCgVqrhY/w-d-xo.html is worth considering. Panasonic announced the FZ2500 today, which might also be a good candidate.
***** Thanks Maarten, very kind of you. Yes, I´ve checked that out but then realized, ...I just won´t buy something electronic that hasn´t been experienced by other users first. We really value experience like yours plus this internet times :) That sony option against any other? Pan TZ80? Canon G 7X? Would love a camera like A6300 but in fixed lens version he, he... and much better prie as well... but bigger sensor isn´t neccesarily better video right?...considering the camcorders that do much better filming and have small sensors, your thoughts?
You are welcome to wait until I review the FZ2500 - hopefully before the end of the year. You're right, video doesn't really need a bigger sensor - even if you're shooting 4K (which is really only 8MP). Wouldn't agree that camcorders provide better image quality - they certainly don't do low light well and they have a very wide depth of field, but they do typically have better stabilization.
I see, sorry I can't be more help. You could consider the Sony CX900 - a camcorder with a one inch sensor. Very similar to the AX100 (which I did review), but without 4K th-cam.com/video/SHSplI0x6vU/w-d-xo.html
La durée d'enregistrement est limitée à 30 minutes ou à 4 Go, selon la première éventualité. Il est possible de recommencer à enregistrer immédiatement, mais il y aura un vide.
+Hugh A N I appreciate the kind words. I use the HDMI out from the camera to an Atomos Shogun (you could use a Ninja Star if that's your budget) to record the screen. However, that's not always possible - as not everything is output on the HDMI, so I also have a dual camera rig with a macro lens to record the screen. Hope this helps, happy to provide further guidance.
There is no pause feature while recording, if that's what you mean. But, as you're not the first person to ask, I wonder why you're asking the question ... recording starts pretty much instantly, about as quickly as it would if recording was paused, so I'd like to understand the value that you would find in this feature. How would pause be useful?
@@MaartenHeilbron But how do you set-up the FZ300 clean HDMI output for live stream on a computer with Zoom or OBS Streamlab? I googled the subject & people say that this model can't do that or they say that it stops auto-focus (meaning that you can't move an inch, without blurring). I'm so confused. I've seen someone able to use OBS streamlab, but he used the more recent: Lumix FZ1000 MKII which is 2X the price...$500 to $1000. Help?
Those frames rates are available in countries where the video system is NTSC with 30/60 frame broadcast. This model does not support NTSC/PAL switching.
Hello. I had a panasonic fz28. I really liked it. Broke in a fall. I bought the Canon SX50. Very good. but some moments missed the FZ28 My SX50 started experiencing zoom issues. Already with 3 years of use. I went to look at the market and what interested me was the FZ200. I did not buy, now I was between the FZ200 and the FZ300 and, this one its FZ1000. But here in my country, prices are very high and I think, that's not good, buy a FZ1000 or a FZ2000 ja. I'd love it, but $$$$ I am very inclined to go to the FZ300. But things in my country are very expensive. I paid at the time for the SX50 999 of my country's money. Today, an FZ300 is over 4000 of my country's money. An FZ1000 or FZ2000, up more money. Remembering that they are limited cameras, the value is absurd for me being amateur. I'm watching a FZ200, used, we'll see what it gives. I just think of the zoom difference. Today 50x, break to 24x. As in general we should not use the zoom to its maximum. In my SX50, in 35x zoom, very good photos, birds etc ... I think the camera with 24X zoom, got good at 18 to 20X zoom. Big difference in time, I did not like the images with the Canon SX60, I found the SX50 better. My path, it seems, will be a used one. Lucky for me. Thanks for this and so many other reviews
Hello Maarten, in three minutes not only you explain how to set the camera for video and sound, but also give tips on how to communicate and/or come across. Amazing, I can’t even tie my shoes in three minutes (LOL). Great video.

Always nice to know that our videos are appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Have this camera been sitting in in my dry cabinet for many2 years...!!! Time to bring it back alive. Thanks for the video
Glad to hear I've provided some inspiration - thanks for commenting.
THIS IS THE BEST TUTORIAL EVER!!!
That's very kind of you to say.
+ForViewingOnly Understood. I don't sing and play in the conventional sense. :-)
Thanks, always nice to read kind words from an appreciative viewer.
Love all of your tutorials Maarten. Easy to understand, right to the point, thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to comment with your kind words.
Thank you very much for your video! I have the newest firmware but I only have 24p, not 30p and my exposure mode is great out, any suggestions?
In some regions (those where 25Hz is the AC standard) cameras did not support frame rates that are not multiples of 25. Those in areas where 30Hz is standard will support multiples of 30.
I have a few questions regarding your tips: 1) why you suggest SDXC U3 is best for 4K? I have SDXC U1, is there any significant difference between those two? 2) Why you recommend 30p rec quality for 4K? My FZ300 lets me only record in 4K, 100M, 25p, is it because of the memory card?
I have a few answers:
1) The difference between U1 and U3 is not material for this camera, even when recording 4K.
Great video as usual! Also, I read your reply to comments for the first time. My brain lets me hear your voice and tone and I read them, lol!
+Average Adversary Thanks for the kind words. And that's reassuring, I also hear my voice when I read them. :-)
Hey Maarten thank you a lot! I wonder why I do not have in the motion picture FHD 30p but 25p or 60p (?)
It's likely because you live in a region where the standard is 25/50. It's 30/60 in North America.
Hi, nice video. I recently bought this Panasonic fz300 camera. But I found on the lens, 3-4 mm from the edge of the lens, a scratch, about 1 mm, the thickness of a needle tip! Can it affect my photos or movies, condensation ..., are there other things like that? Thanks.
If you purchased a new camera, I'd return it. If it's used, I'd make some recordings and take some photographs to determine if the defect is visible.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks a lot
Hi again Maarten. Is there a way to stabilization or off on the fz300 in settings? I recorded motion car footage while on a window stabilizer but my shots all come out wavy and glichy. Side driver-side shots and driver pov/front shots, looking straight ahead.
Yes, the stabilizer can be turned off from the camera menu. The effect you're seeing may not be the stabilizer, it may be the rolling shutter effect.
Hi Maarten. I don't think it's rolling shutter. The video appears to be floating and not stable. It's swaying from side to side lol. I don't think it was meant for getting motion shots.
Is it better with the stabilizer off?
I will try it tomorrow. In the bed now lol. Thanks.
I have the Sam camera but i still get noise grains in the video is like the 4k on it is fake !! How can I solve this
You can solve this with a lower ISO and better lighting.
That was the best tutorial I've watched to help me with my camera.
Thanks, always nice to know my videos are appreciated.
Do you have a tutorial for video settings while using this camera outdoors for wildlife photography? Birds in trees, etc. zoom required.......often very sunny conditions.......
With apologies, I did not do a video like that.
Hi,Maarten!
Thank you for this tutorial. It is very useful for me,especially that i'm new photography fan and not professional
Why do we have to do this resets?
+Shi Wom Neither does the A6000.
I just bought the Sony A7ii, hehe :)
+Evan Brand Wow, nice! Let me know if the autofocus works for you.
is 60 the best for B roll or is there a better setting? or is there manual setting and then using the red button.
Maarten Heilbron But a camcorder even at a $1,000 price point will not get a shallow depth of field with a fixed lenses will it?
That is a low price point - typically at that price point you will have a small sensor.
Consider one inch the minimum for a shallow depth of field. th-cam.com/video/aLlEMo3dgu8/w-d-xo.html
Sony does make a video camera that takes e-mount lenses.
Is it possible to get that cinematic bokeh effect (shallow depth of field like DSLR) with this camera (while keeping camera close to person - selfie mode)?
Not really with this small sensor. The best approach is to zoom in all the way, then to stay close to the camera and far from the background.
How is this compared to the Lumix G7 and which has better focus?
The G7 is a superior camera in many aspects, that includes focus.
Thanks Maarten and Calla for keeping it simple and effective.
Our pleasure! Thanks for the kind words.
could be as good as g7 with kit lens for low light videos? what about the focus? is betetr than fz1000? thanks..I like a lot your reviews
+Maarten Heilbron Thank you very much - G7 it is!
Yes! More detailed configuraions PLEASE! Great video, thank you !
+Lucía Muñoz Thanks for the kind words, and the encouragement. Advanced configuration video will be posted this week.
Super! Thank you so much. Have a great day!
Hello! :) What focus do you use when two people are in the frame? Thanks in advance.
I would still use face detect, as stated in the video - or is that not working for you?
Not really. I am moving my head too much. The camera has to adjust the focus every time. It looks bad.
Have you tried manual focus, possibly with a slightly smaller aperture (larger F number) for a wider depth of field?
Not yet. Will do. I am not at my camera at the moment, but is it possible to manually focus on two points? Lets say, one person is on the left and the other person is on the right, with something in between? (I appreciate your help. Thanks)
Yes, as long as both are about the same distance from the camera.
I loved the tutorial but I noticed my camera smooths objects and blurs them almost. Is there a reason? How can i fix this? Thanks!
Thanks. It's likely because there is too little light and the ISO setting is too high.
@@MaartenHeilbron cool thank you for the reply!!
Hey, great Video. Im just wondering, how did you managed to record the screen of the fz300? Have you just put another camera behind the screen or did you got a method to get an hdmi signal out of there?
The HDMI port outputs the signal, with or without the menu/overlay. Thanks for your kind words.
Good and useful information.
Just one question. How does it perform in low light?
Thanks for the kind words. In low light, not as well as I'd like - the small sensor limits its capabilities.
hi ! is it good camera for short films and documentaries films ? can we shoot cinematic style video with this camera ?
I would not - the sensor is too small to provide quality images. It’s fine for vlogging on TH-cam, but ...
Does this camera have a clean hdmi output port for capturing/livestreaming?
Yes.
Hey I've found a SDXC U3 card that looks identical to the one in the video but the only difference is at the bottom it says "read 98 write 75 mb/s". Is that an issue? Is that better than the one in the video that you have? Yours says read 90 write 45 so just making sure.
Not an issue, that would be better than the card suggested in the video.
@@MaartenHeilbron Ok thank you :) Also how long do you think I'd be able to get away with recording a 4k video for? Just bought the lumix fz300 so I'm new to everything lol

I have just gotten the FZ300, and I love the 4K video. However I seem to be having issues with the auto focus hunting more then I like. I zoom or pan and it will hunt for focus sometimes or not at all or be perfect and adjust. Am I missing something?
Which focus area setting are you using?
I am using video mode with every thing in default settings. It seems to hunt for focus with movement/zooming. I sometimes can't focus at all when zoomed in.
What are you focussing on? Are you using AFC? Which focus area selection? Are you using face detect?
Maarten Heilbron I am shooting sports, animal, b-roll etc. AFS/AFF, no face detection.
I'm glad to hear you've found a solution.
You'll find the online manual here: ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/camera/om/dmc-fz300_en_om.pdf (There's also an advanced features one: ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/camera/om/dmc-fz300_en_adv_om.pdf

Is this camera good for filming DIY in a garage for youtube? And also for review stuff and unboxing? I'm looking for a universal camera for video.
Those are all tasks that your phone, and this camera, can handle. However, if you are planning to take this seriously, you should consider a better camera.
Maarten Heilbron which one do you recommend? One important thing is jack for external mic.
An entry level Canon - they nearly all have swivel screens and mic inputs. th-cam.com/video/33ndb6KQbx0/w-d-xo.html

Hi, im thinking of buying this camera but is it a video camera? What I mean is.. Is it made just for videoing?
It does both stills and video.
Hi Maarten.
Good point - between flickering and weird colour cast, Fluorescent lights are not exactly photo friendly.
Maarten Heilbron I own both but cannot find out if it’s worth lugging it around if the iPhone is better. Like low light etc
I wouldn't lug both around unless you really saw the difference. I haven't seen them side by side, but suspect the decision might go to the iPhone for quality, the Panasonic for features/settings (but, of course, there's an app for that).
Seems like a solid camera. Keep up the great reviews.
-Cheers
I appreciate the kind words, thanks.
You didn't tell people what does the big dial do
When I'm in that recording mode it goes from 2.8 to 11 and changes the brightness (it's not ISO)
It sets the aperture, one of the three ways to control brightness.

Hi Maarten. What setting was the auto focus switch at please?
AFC, sorry should have mentioned that.
I have tried this and the camera seems to focus hunt :(
Oh. If you are at a fixed distance from the camera, use AFS. I didn't want to make the video too complicated, but you could also turn on face detect. Touching the screen on your face mostly works (but I have a face that often defies detection, particularly when wearing glasses.)
LOL
Hi maarten what do you think of the video in low light.. it is terrible gets blurely 4K is good FHD sucks
This camera is not good in low light, the images look very mushy and grainy.

When i record It looks like a soft skin tone is on or something with my camera and I don't know how to turn it off so It can show my skin clearer without it being fuzzy or waxy, how do I fix this?
The light levels are too low, the ISO is too high. You likely need more/better lighting.
transferring videos/images from my fz300 onto my iphone 6plus is extremely slow.

Hey thanks man, this will help with me filming stars at night! :D
Always nice to hear I've been able to help.
question, why use shutter mode for video recording? just curious!
+Maarten Heilbron
great information!! i would just like to use this camera as a camcorder with no blur at all. and i noticed setting it at 1/60 or 1/30 does eliminate the blur.
+Maarten Heilbron thanks. where can i get the nd filter for it? ebay?
Your local camera store, Amazon, eBay, Aliexpress ... You'll likely want ND8 or higher, with a 52mm diameter.
At 1:37 what does the dial control? the shutter speed?
The shutter speed.

***** Thanks, will be having a look at your review, but, I have to buy a camera this week..for the rugby matches

Always my pleasure, always nice to know you've found useful content on my channel. Thanks for watching.
Can you tell me the exact name/type of the microphone Rhode? Good video. Keep on doing it is great.
Thanks for the kind words. It's this one: bhpho.to/2jc5F8I

Very nice tips, thanks.
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
I was curious as to how you upload and edit
I edit using Final Cut on a Mac, and upload the finished file by dragging and dropping it onto the TH-cam upload page. Does that help?
Thank you, Maarten, for your videos. They're great.
I wonder how you screen capture your view finder's/swivel screen's output?
+Hugh A N I appreciate the kind words. I use the HDMI out from the camera to an Atomos Shogun (you could use a Ninja Star if that's your budget) to record the screen. However, that's not always possible - as not everything is output on the HDMI, so I also have a dual camera rig with a macro lens to record the screen. Hope this helps, happy to provide further guidance.
How do you pause the video??
There is no pause feature while recording, if that's what you mean. But, as you're not the first person to ask, I wonder why you're asking the question ... recording starts pretty much instantly, about as quickly as it would if recording was paused, so I'd like to understand the value that you would find in this feature. How would pause be useful?
Great tutorial! Thanks! Very helpful!
I appreciate the kind words - always nice to know I've been able to help.

Always my pleasure, thanks for the kind words.
Does the fz300 support clean HDMI output?
Yes.
Maarten Heilbron thanks. Does the camera output video over hdmi while recording?
@@dabeiabzwei It does.
Help?
@@Juicexlx You'll generally need a device that turns the HDMI into USB, so that when connected to the computer, it looks like a webcam.
Awesome video. Thanks.
+Old Cameras Very kind of you to say, thanks.
can we get clean hdmi out?
Yes, we can.
Thanks you your information

Amazing tutorial!!!
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words.
My fz300 has 4k 24p&25p but on yours it 4k 24p&30p why?
Those frames rates are available in countries where the video system is NTSC with 30/60 frame broadcast. This model does not support NTSC/PAL switching.
Thank you
always happy to help
what's the name of that mic on her shirt
Pretty sure we mentioned that: 2:20. It's available here: bhpho.to/2jc5F8I
How to i connect my videomic go to it?
Have you tried mounting it on the flash shoe and plugging it into the mic input on the left side?
Thank you so much..!

Great to hear, thanks for your kind words.
Hello.
I had a panasonic fz28.
I really liked it.
Broke in a fall.
I bought the Canon SX50.
Very good. but some moments missed the FZ28
My SX50 started experiencing zoom issues.
I'd love it, but $$$$
I am very inclined to go to the FZ300.
Big difference
in time, I did not like the images with the Canon SX60, I found the SX50 better.
My path, it seems, will be a used one.
Lucky for me.
Thanks for this and so many other reviews
Thanks for sharing your experiences.
