A great book to read if you want to understand where the regional cultural differences comes from, I suggest reading Albion’s Seed by David Hacket Fisher. It comes down to the fact different regions of the country were settled by different groups of people. Primary the north and Midwest with radical British Protestants from the London Area, the south by Scots Irish from the Scottish lowlands + Northern Ireland, and also the Germans and Scandinavians that settled in Pennsylvania and throughout the Midwest. A shorter account of this is Michael barrone’s book shaping our nation. Excellent read and for me I came out with a much better understanding of how political preferences have strongly correlated with settlement patterns for an area.
