Johann Strauss jr.-Die Fledermaus.Royal Opera House Covent Garden, 1984. Doris Soffel as Prince Orlofsky.Herman Prey as Eisenstein. Placido Domingo conductor
I will playing Prince Orlofsky in my college's production this March. I'm so very glad I won't be bald! I'm glad this is posted to help give me an idea of how to play a rich Russian Prince who is bored with his life (I'm none of those things)!!
@heavymental85 Your comment got me excited; I thought I was gonna hear somebody say 'blahblahblah, SOMETHING IN GERMAN'.... actually, what the hell, how many languages are rolling in this video?
Лучше Малены Ернман еще никто не спел... она убедительно сыграла графа, а не женщину переодетую в мужчину.... да, голос ее богаче... он контраальтовый, но имеет красивый верх.
I'm asking this just for my information -- why is this role always played by a woman? I have no agenda here; I just would like to know because I'm interested.
This version can't even begin to hold a candle to the Carlos Kleiber version with the great Brigitte Fassbinder as the Count. This thing is a bore, heavy and lacking in spirit.
Doris Soffel is my favourite prince Orlofsky. Her voice is firm and sonorous, beautiful. Thank you very much for posting.

This is the best ever version!
I like her voice she has a very nice tone
@Estuddian I did find a male countertenor singing this on YT: Jochen Kowalski. He's terrific.
Doris Soffel
@Estuddian Very interesting! Thank you!
Yes he is.
The original lyrics have the same line in German.

@TK2008BEST Her face may look like Boy George, but her head is pure Sinead O'Connor.
@tintinthemafiapixie Thank you!
Is it just me, or is he at 2:33 saying "*something in german*...MY WIFES BEST DRESS"?
@temperanceluv81 That is Boy George too.
I wish she was a little funnier during the piece, but she sang it well!

The prince looks like Boy George...

Orlofsky is odd and kind of awkward, so I wouldn't say the acting is really bad.

"Dude look like a lady!"
