I wonder if you could sometime show us beginners in slow motion your ornamentations for this song. I have watched many times but still get a little lost. It is beautiful the way you play it. Thanks for the consideration !
I really want to thank you again, I am just learning violin and this was my second choice of tunes to learn. after getting a little better at drones and string changes your tips on this tune will really help me spice it up. Thanks again for sharing!
I loved it! Thank you very much for teaching us about playing drones and slides and then my, oh my, when will I ever master vibrato!?? I have arthritis in my fingers and therefore I find it so difficult to bend the last tip of my fingers. I love watching all your videos!
Thanks so much for leaving such a lovely comment! I hope you found my playlist on vibrato! So many players have found video one very helpful! Arthritis in your fingers can pose a difficult obstacle. Maybe some massage of the hand and fingers before you work. Also, small amounts of time on vibrato. Don't push it! If it hurts -- stop! xoxoxox
Question on double stops: Are double stops mostly used throughout the whole song? If not, when would be a more proper time to add them to the phrasing of the piece? I've listened to some violinists/fiddlers who only add double stops to enhance their song, but I'll be danged if I can figure out when to add them while I'm playing. Is there some kind of rule, something like "don't play double stops during the song, unless you're at a long, drawn out note"? I'm stumped. (I'm trying to create my own songs and want to use double stops, but ... )
There is no rule. People usually add chords when they are comfortable. If you're writing music, you have complete liberty to add a second or third note at your discretion. In the video here, my point was to increase complexity as you repeat the basic melody a second and third time, to maintain listener interest.
The basic amazing grace sheet music can be downloaded here: www.8notes.com/scores/10104.asp . It might be a little different than I play it in the video, but you can still use the same embellishments I describe in this tutorial. Good luck!
The violin is a 1921 French built by Paul Kaul, #6 of a series of 6 violins crafted for Lucien Capet. Yehudi Menuin once owned it! I use Tomastik Dominant (weich) brand strings. Thanks for asking!
It's actually a very bright instrument and rather unforgiving, to be honest. The tomastik (weich) strings settle it down some. I use a Pirastro E (Oliv). Obligato strings are the most mellow but they sound horrible on this instrument! What do you play?
That's amazing! I play violin and three other instruments. My Violin is a late 1800s or early 1900s Stainer stamped copy that I recently got! Not much exiting about it but it plays beautifully! I use Pirastro strings with a gold E string!
God bles you @Violin teacher
