Thanks for the video! We just acquired nearly 20 complete and working vintage sewing machines. Trying to decide to sell whole or part out. I know very little about sewing. But these came from the estate of a man who fixed them up. He even kept notes about when he repaired and his estimated value at the time. There are still nearly 100 more machines to pick up. (All this is free)
Nice video! So do you just figure out the names of the parts by searching the model and learning based on other listings? Or just google search or image search it? I know nothing about sewing machines so it would involve a bit of learning for me.. I may try to get one if it’s really cheap.
Dave Seavey - I haven't tried to repair sewing machines. But, the service manuals for many vintage electronics items are available (for free) online. Service manuals often include parts lists or assembly diagrams which include the part numbers. This seems to be especially true for better brands. If you find the manual(s) online, be cautious and do not download and "readers" b/c they're probably loaded with malware. Good luck.
What about higher value sewing machines like Bernina and Pfaff machines? Do you still part them out? Or is it better to sell them complete? I have been ignoring White, Kenmore, and many Singer models even if I could get them cheap because they don't sell for so much, but maybe I should buy them and part them out? Maybe it was mistake not to pick them up.
Depends a lot of the condition of the machine and the value of the machine. If I can sell the machine for $250 plus shipping I’ll sell the machine whole. If not I’ll part it out. I will price parts higher for those higher value machines, but those are more rare and less common situations. 97% of machines I find are basic sewing machines.
I found this all incredibly interesting! I have an extremely old sewing machine probably from the 30s which I have not even looked at to list. But I do have two listed one is an old JCPenney sewing machine and the other is called a dressmaker and I was really surprised the dressmaker one I thought looked really nice. I know it works well but everybody’s complaining about the shipping but it’s so heavy. I’m just wondering if I have something wrong on the shipping price somehow and I just don’t see how. I actually considered maybe taking them apart for parts so this video was incredibly helpful for that. Thank you for all the information you share.
You are a very attentive dad. Your son is blessed.
Thanks so much!
I am inspired by this! I’m patient, and love sewing machines.
It’s really been a great addition to my business.
I’m not sure you could have done this video without your helper😊 He is good at it. Good detailed video you explained a lot.
Thanks for watching! He loves to “help”

Wow that’s incredible. Sewing machines that sell for 200 or 300 I usually just sell whole and ship out.

Yea that’s how I initially started. I picked up 2 for 50 cents each at a garage sale and have been hooked every sense.

Why dont you sell on Etsy?
I’m just focusing all my energy into EBAY. I’m not currently investing time into cross listing, but it is something I’m currently considering.
Thanks for sharing this, I love parting stuff out so this is right in my wheelhouse.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello ❤ I want to do this I have some machines to take apart

Do you only buy ones that have free shipping or what is your limit that you’ll pay on shipping?
I’ll pay $30 total. I have sometimes paid 99 cents plus $29 shipping and I have sometimes paid $30 with free shipping.

@@865Picker thanks for watching! Shipping on whole machines can be very expensive!
