When I was a kid, I thought Ren's bedroom soliloquy in Stimpy's Fan Club was the funniest thing I had ever seen in my life. I was a very disturbed child.

This show pioneered the inclusion of more "adult" content in childrens programming. I honestly don't believe series like Adventure Time or Steven Universe would have the themes they did if it wasn't for this show challenging the conventions of the industry at that time.

charmelink I grew up in the 2000s and I’m annoyed when people act like stereotypical old men about how the next generation sucks or how people have gotten too sensitive. Also, there are just as many fucked up modern cartoons as there were back then (Adventure Time had that creepy episode with the deer, The Lich is an intimidating and terrifying villain plus the show takes place in a post apocalyptic world destroyed by nuclear war), Gravity Falls had blood, creepy imagery and even the apocalypse happened. It sounds like people are either cherry picking or not doing enough research.
Troin I get you, I think it comes to the undertone of 90’s cartoons leaning a little more on ”the negative/ironic” side of live, compared to how “positive in face of adversity” cartoons tend to be nowadays... I just don’t like cheerful cartoons and I’m not being biased by my childhood here ‘cause there’s older and newer cartoons I like too; Regular Show, The Flintstones and 60’s WB for instance... non of that 80’s crap like Thundercats, GI Joe, Scooby Doo or He-Man, of course! Stimpy’s Fanclub was the first R&S episode I saw in its entirety and it’s what got me hooked on the show. I was a lonely, nerdy kid with a weird sense of humor. At 12, a lot of shit was going on in my life and my mind would go to some pretty dark places at times. This show made me feel understood. Not that I related to the characters that much, but because it could be funny, weird, gross, disturbing, endearing, even cute at times. It did justice to whatever emotion it was portraying and it felt real. Made me realize people actually make this stuff and base their whole careers on wanting to entertain others. In short, this show made me want to persue animation. (Plus the gay undertones probably spoke to me as a closet case, who’d have thunk it?)
It's been 30 years and it's still hard to wrap my head around the motivations behind the humor in the show. It's the most simultaneously absurd and authentic/personal piece of art I can think of.
