    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Clara (Betsy Blair) tells Marty (Ernest Borgnine) that she believes in him, that he's a good butcher, and that he can do anything he wants to do.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Paddy Chayefsky's Oscar-winning slice-of-life drama originated as a live 1953 broadcast directed by Delbert Mann on The Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse starring Rod Steiger and Nancy Marchand. The Hecht-Lancaster movie version, also directed by Mann, replaces the two leads with Ernest Borgnine and Betsy Blair (as well as featuring several soon-to-be-familiar faces, including Jerry Paris, Frank Sutton, and Karen Steele, plus Joe Mantell, Nehemiah Persoff, and Betsy Palmer from the TV version). But it remains otherwise intact, telling of 24 very important hours in the lives of two lonely people. Marty is a bittersweet, sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, and always realistic comedy-drama about Marty Pilletti (Ernest Borgnine), a 34-year-old Bronx butcher. Approaching middle-age as a burly, somewhat overweight man who has no illusions about himself or his attractiveness to women, Marty looks forward to just one thing in life -- buying his boss's butcher shop and trying to make a success in business -- and he's even uncertain about that. A gentle, good-natured man, he lives with his mother (Esther Minciotti), a kind but emotionally smothering woman, in a too-large house and spends his time a small circle of dead-end friends (Joe Mantell, Frank Sutton). One Friday night, Marty's mother convinces him to go to the Stardust Ballroom, where he meets a plain-looking schoolteacher named Clara (Betsy Blair), whose life appears to mirror his own -- she lives with her father, and is frightened about the one prospect she has for advancement in her job. Meeting her after witnessing a humiliating rejection by her blind date, Marty acts on his best impulses and asks Clara to dance, and soon they are actually enjoying each other's company. She is as drawn to him as he is to her, but both are so uncertain about putting themselves at risk emotionally, that the evening almost ends badly when he tries to kiss her -- but they agree to go to talk on the phone and go to a movie the next night. But whatever good feelings he has about Clara are soon threatened by his friends' put-downs of her, and his mother's hostility, driven by her sudden panic that if Marty marries, she'll be left living alone. Marty spends the next day alone and never does call Clara, seemingly having decided that it's best to leave well enough alone. That is, until he takes a good long look at his life, and a listen to his friends -- and he suddenly makes the decision to try for true happiness, wherever it leads.

@Forever Alone Guy think of this... what *real* good did liberation do? The majority of men love their wives and vice versa. Guess what? Most people are not "studs" or and most gals are not beauty queens. Most of the world is mediocre. It is what it is. Liberation means a woman gets to go into work. Wow, that's progress. We can all find out that work sort of sucks. We can deny ourselves a tad bit of companionship. People make fun of the '50s. 200 years from now, historians will be appalled at the rottenness of the 2020s.

That little bit of dialogue at the beginning of this clip, where he talks about how he could feel the subway sucking him down, there was a time in my life I felt exactly the same way. I was at a low point in my life too, just lost my regular job, couldn't stand what I was doing now or my co-workers. And as the train was rumbling in, I could feel it right through my legs dragging me down.
This movie, this scene really hits a nerve for me in a lot of ways.

A retired merchant seaman, blue collar guy. Plain, chubby, built for hugging, wears overalls, laughs easily, is kind and sensitive. People look down on merchant seamen, too..but i didn't. We are contentedly wed - since 2008.

A lot of the film's dialog is classic New York -- shouting and arguing. But this scene WHISPERS, and it grabs you by being quiet. Marty and Clara are sharing secrets they can't tell others: fears, sins, dreams. And so they become bound together.

I am a bachelor. A member of a few dating sites. Hoping every week to find a girl like her. Broke up with my last girl because she was banging a dude on our street. She acted like i'm not supposed to have feelings. My buddy tried to make me feel better about it by saying they are all like that nowadays. So i'm listening to Marty and his new girl talking and wishing my lovelife could have such potential, and i'm crying, and I was listening to her tell Marty he needs to follow his dream and both Marty and ME were falling in love with her...

    • @lrigdrenlrigdren2147
      @lrigdrenlrigdren2147 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I'm really sorry you had such a terrible experience!
It's especially hard when you think you've been careful, taken your time, checked that the person you're with has good values and a caring nature, ... and then the person lets you down in a big way. On top of that pain, you begin to question your own judgment.
I came to this film looking for the same thing, from the other side: an example of a man of good character, and (in my case) someone who doesn't mind a woman being plain, or even ugly. And, an example of people being brave enough to try yet again, after so many hurts. I love Marty for the kindness and encouragement he shows Clara, who needs it every bit as much.
I've only dated a bit - I'm middle-aged - but every boyfriend save one found it necessary to tell me at some point that I was fat and ugly, and why couldn't I look like this or that woman? Why would they say that to me? Why did they go out with me, if looks mattered so much? I thought I'd been wise in choosing whom to go out with (churchgoers, helpers of old ladies), but I must have missed something in their character. There were worse behaviors too, from lying to cheating to stalking. It seriously messed with my ability to trust. I put up walls a bit now, not to be mean to men, but to self-protect.
I don't get why such things happen. I know there are so many good men - I'm related to many, and others have married my friends. I'm a nice normal friendly woman of reasonable intelligence. But I think even most nice men, just can't get past looks and see someone's heart. I've not dated in 7 years, and haven't tried much - it's lonely, but the time without so much anxiety, hurt and fear, has also been healing. I try to take inspiration from friends who married late (my favorite professor was 64!) and from those who never married (several beloved relatives and family friends). If I am blessed enough to find true love before I die, with a gentle-hearted emotionally stable man, I will be over the moon. But if not, I'm determined to support the sweet couples I see, and be the lovable old maid in everybody's Friend Zone.
Take care of yourself, and may you find *your* dream!

Wait a minute... If she's only known him for 3 hours out on the town, how does she know he's a good butcher or not?

You can learn a lot about a person in 3 hours. And Marty can go talking about that for 30 minutes I guarantee it

150$ per week in 1955 is about 80K per year today. So Marty must be a pretty good butcher to be in a position to make that kind of money.
