I dated a girl once, a long time ago in my younger years. We had a very serious relationship, and we were talking of marriage. She was killed in a car accident and I was very broken-hearted. They just don't make em like that anymore. And yes, to this day I really miss her.
Still love this movie. First saw it in the ‘50’s. The sensitivity and compassion and understanding was touching back then. It still is today. Both characters represent smart and shy individuals. Thanks for sharing.
That little bit of dialogue at the beginning of this clip, where he talks about how he could feel the subway sucking him down, there was a time in my life I felt exactly the same way. I was at a low point in my life too, just lost my regular job, couldn't stand what I was doing now or my co-workers. And as the train was rumbling in, I could feel it right through my legs dragging me down. This movie, this scene really hits a nerve for me in a lot of ways.
i hope you rapidly found your way - its so hard when everything conspires, even if its for a short while. Marty is a film of hope and I very much wish things turned around for you quickly.
This scene perfectly illustrates that you don't need fancy computer gadgetry and a lot of technological bells and whistles to make a classic film--just great acting, a great story, and great characters that move you emotionally!

This movie is close to so many people's hearts. Two 'losers in love' become winners, and follow their hearts..And suddenly Marty and Clara - well, you root for them...BTW MY Marty is named Ric. A retired merchant seaman, blue collar guy. Plain, chubby, built for hugging, wears overalls, laughs easily, is kind and sensitive. People look down on merchant seamen, too..but i didn't. We are contentedly wed - since 2008.
Well actresses are in general better looking than average...and the producers probably just wanted someone who looks cute for the part.... probably noone thought that someone will think like we just did...
A lot of the film's dialog is classic New York -- shouting and arguing. But this scene WHISPERS, and it grabs you by being quiet. Marty and Clara are sharing secrets they can't tell others: fears, sins, dreams. And so they become bound together.
"People look down on butchers..." "Well I don't" Let's keep it a buck, Marty and Clara are basically Rocky and Adrian about 21 years before that movie came out.
People could take a lesson from this scene. Everyone today are all trying to act cool and careless. It turned people mean. This is how people used to be. This story wasn't just made up, people us to have feelings.
I am a bachelor. A member of a few dating sites. Hoping every week to find a girl like her. Broke up with my last girl because she was banging a dude on our street. She acted like i'm not supposed to have feelings. My buddy tried to make me feel better about it by saying they are all like that nowadays. So i'm listening to Marty and his new girl talking and wishing my lovelife could have such potential, and i'm crying, and I was listening to her tell Marty he needs to follow his dream and both Marty and ME were falling in love with her...
I'm really sorry you had such a terrible experience! It's especially hard when you think you've been careful, taken your time, checked that the person you're with has good values and a caring nature, ... and then the person lets you down in a big way. On top of that pain, you begin to question your own judgment. I came to this film looking for the same thing, from the other side: an example of a man of good character, and (in my case) someone who doesn't mind a woman being plain, or even ugly. And, an example of people being brave enough to try yet again, after so many hurts. I love Marty for the kindness and encouragement he shows Clara, who needs it every bit as much. I've only dated a bit - I'm middle-aged - but every boyfriend save one found it necessary to tell me at some point that I was fat and ugly, and why couldn't I look like this or that woman? Why would they say that to me? Why did they go out with me, if looks mattered so much? I thought I'd been wise in choosing whom to go out with (churchgoers, helpers of old ladies), but I must have missed something in their character. There were worse behaviors too, from lying to cheating to stalking. It seriously messed with my ability to trust. I put up walls a bit now, not to be mean to men, but to self-protect. I don't get why such things happen. I know there are so many good men - I'm related to many, and others have married my friends. I'm a nice normal friendly woman of reasonable intelligence. But I think even most nice men, just can't get past looks and see someone's heart. I've not dated in 7 years, and haven't tried much - it's lonely, but the time without so much anxiety, hurt and fear, has also been healing. I try to take inspiration from friends who married late (my favorite professor was 64!) and from those who never married (several beloved relatives and family friends). If I am blessed enough to find true love before I die, with a gentle-hearted emotionally stable man, I will be over the moon. But if not, I'm determined to support the sweet couples I see, and be the lovable old maid in everybody's Friend Zone. Take care of yourself, and may you find *your* dream!
People would like you to think most women are like the girls you see on the Whatever Podcast. That is VERY far from the truth. Most women are going to be like Clara. Just got to find them.
Also on my own. And largely because a woman such as the one in this movie, Clara has not yet become available in my life. As I look back on all my misbegotten failed attempts @ relationship success and @ all the many things I have done wrong by women, I have decided to stay out of relationships and away from women until a woman as full of heart mind and true character as the schoolteacher Clara happens my way.
I loved that movie. So much like real life. He was really good in this. She was too. When you have a feeling about something ,as she had about him, its usually correct. You've got to go with your " gut feeling".
I remember when I finished university and started my own cleaning business and people looked down on me at 21 driving a beat up car working 15 hour days, waking up at 4.30am and going bed about 9.30pm 7 days a week. 4 years later I was clearing profit £104k a year. All of a Sunday I looked attractive to women of all ages
I love this movie so much. It’s one of the only films where I can 100% fully relate to the main character and feel more connected to him than any one in my real life. Thank you to whoever directed this movie. We need more like these classics today

It appears that this movie is free on TH-cam. Now I really have to watch it. As I’m watching it I can see a great contrast versus dating now and then dating in the 1950s of this era. Of course it’s very rare that a guy can open up his heart to a woman he’s only known for a day And gives all the whoa is me stories, and then she is being very kind and receptive, and very encouraging. Which, of course might be for the sake of the plot of the movie otherwise, we wouldn’t get nowhere lol, but it’s very understandable that doing that now doesn’t seem to work With women because a woman wants to hear that a guy that she’s talking to you has a strong backbone, a man who is a man’s man. But I think, in this particular situation to kindred spirits, who can be open with each other without really knowing each other, and then something clicks, and it can be very rare. Molly thing is for those who are like Marty, try to be more like Marty, how he was at the end of the movie, where he developed a backbone for once, and decide to man up and take charge of his life. “ what the hell am I standing around you guys for, I got a great thing going on with Clara!”
And you shouldn't live with a woman before marriage either...hell, why bother even meeting her at all before the wedding. If you're going to spend the rest of your life with someone, or even a few years, it's important to know if you're sexually compatible with the other person. Not to mention that the first time is usually not so great for young women. But who cares about what is good for them I guess, we are fantasizing about the 50s after all.

Betsy Blair was a dancer and a model (if u can believe that!) before she was an actress and was married to Gene Kelly for 16 years (thats kinda unbelievable too!) and was seriously interested in marxism (for which she came under gmt investigation) and was blacklisted from hollywood work for several years. (disappointing she wasnt keen on freedom of speech and vote etc, yet she lived/enjoyed living in the free est country in the world, how ironic is that)
Have watched this movie many times -- that should show that I like it. The only thing that feels wrong for me is that Clara's character is presented as a plain Jane. Clara is not Miss America-beautiful but is perfectly attractive physically, even more so overall as her kind personality is revealed.
Somehow I don't think talking about suicide, and then transitioning into talk about being a butcher would go over well on a date these days. Would it even fly back then?
This seems like a good movie.....never saw it before ..... @@lrigdrenlrigdren2147 This - also, I laugh at the notion that Clara was a "dog" she was very pretty with a nice smile and kind eyes, but this is Hollywood so anything less than Marilyn Monroe (who had extensive plastic surgery it should be noted) was "ugly". The problem is when people let their libido lead their lives and mix up "love" and "lust", or "financial stability"...probably why the divorce rate is so high.
That last little bit, I think she was telling him what he wants to hear. But I got a feeling she would convert without hesitation. ☺️

It appears that this movie is free on TH-cam. Now I really have to watch it. As I’m watching it I can see a great contrast versus dating now and then dating in the 1950s of this era. Of course it’s very rare that a guy can open up his heart to a woman he’s only known for a day And gives all the whoa is me stories, and then she is being very kind and receptive, and very encouraging. Which, of course might be for the sake of the plot of the movie otherwise, we wouldn’t get nowhere lol, but it’s very understandable that doing that now doesn’t seem to work With women because a woman wants to hear that a guy that she’s talking to you has a strong backbone, a man who is a man’s man. But I think, in this particular situation to kindred spirits, who can be open with each other without really knowing each other, and then something clicks, and it can be very rare. Molly thing is for those who are like Marty, try to be more like Marty, how he was at the end of the movie, where he developed a backbone for once, and decide to man up and take charge of his life.

If you're going to spend the rest of your life with someone, or even a few years, it's important to know if you're sexually compatible with the other person. I was once a Catholic and changed after hearing and believing the gospel.
Betsy Blair was a dancer and a model (if u can believe that!) before she was an actress and was married to Gene Kelly for 16 years (thats kinda unbelievable too!) and was seriously interested in marxism (for which she came under gmt investigation) and was blacklisted from hollywood work for several years. (disappointing she wasnt keen on freedom of speech and vote etc, yet she lived/enjoyed living in the free est country in the world, how ironic is that)
Have watched this movie many times -- that should show that I like it. The only thing that feels wrong for me is that Clara's character is presented as a plain Jane. Clara is not Miss America-beautiful but is perfectly attractive physically, even more so overall as her kind personality is revealed.
It makes all the difference in the world to have a woman that believes in you , ..

My girl is looking for a guy like me......just waiting for her to figure that one out.....her daughter had it figured out by the age of four....we were out to dinner and I sat across from them....her daughter came under the table to sit with me....she had a look like " see mom I found a guy like Erik " 😊
