Shame that Hussain and Atherton don't take into account the output of Crawley and Duckett as a pair. Even after a poor series for Crawley, they have a better average than Gooch and Boycott, Atherton and Butcher, Jaffer and Sehwag, Elgar and Markram, Gavaskar and Gaekwad, and pretty much par with Warner and Khawaja, Atherton and Stewart and all this at a strike rate that has winded the best attacks.
Crawley has handled the best - do the english press really want to ruin our chances down under just to fill columns? Concentrate on replacing Pope with Bethel instead.

Interesting question was raised about why this team starts series well and then results tend to fade. There have been two instances in the sub-continent when the home side decided to change the pitches after losing the first Test (in Pakistan, playing a second match on the same pitch, before going to extraordinary lengths to produce a track that would spin at Rawalpindi where this never normally happens). This is executive counterplay, and if it hadn't at least partially succeeded even more heads would have rolled than was actually the case (in Pakistan, all the selectors were guillotined after the first Test). But in other series, after the opposition is taken by storm at first, it often then works them out, at least to some extent. There have been some series where the shock and awe have proven terminal for the other side, but not the best sides.
This is true at the individual level too, where it isn't rocket science for good class international bowlers to find their way through Crawley's defence, for instance. Opponents develop plans for it, unless exceptionally pig-headed. The frequency with which Crawley actually plays decisive innings (even innings which effectively set the tone for a match) is far too low to justify picking him even on a probabilistic basis. There are aggressive and powerful batsmen available with much better technique against the moving ball (Bethell is one, and Jamie Smith another, although the possibility of Smith opening is never mentioned).

I’m no Luddite, and I realise the game has to evolve, but to play in the manner they played in the NZ 3rd test, was criminal. I take nothing away from the NZ bowling in saying this but I truly believe England were on the plane home at the start of the first session; they didn't give a damn about the result or breaking the wrong records. The ‘Balmy Army’ who sold the house and the wife and kids to get there, must at times ask themselves why they bother.
The game has changed and players mindset is entirely different to that of say, 10-15 years ago. Strange to think now, just how fascinating and gripping a final day draw could be. My beloved game, the game I started to follow in the mid-60s, is not the game now which I loved then.

Also, is stokes fit enough for a 5 test series like India or Australia? Also, I disagree that England can't perform without stokes. That's not fair on the depth of seamers and several very good middle order batters. Stokes needs to get over his own 'im the main character of the story's narrative and give responsibility to others.

I wanted us to lose the toss because I knew Stokes would choose to bowl first and I knew it would be the wrong decision!
Why are captains of England the only people in the world who don't know that you should only bowl first if there's a clear and obvious reason for doing so?
Stokes said himself that it was a 50/50 call whether to bowl or bat, so he clearly didn't think the pitch and conditions were screaming "You must bowl first!".
People may think that you can't blame Stokes' decision to bowl for such a heavy loss but we would've been under less pressure and probably would've played better if Stokes had done the sensible thing and batted first.
I clearly have no way of knowing whether or not we would've won if we'd batted first but I'm sure the match would've been a lot closer if we had.

Don't forget the reckless and arrogant declaration on the first day of the Ashes 23. Cost them the game and the series. Fantastic really.
With Joe Root looking in ominous touch and Ollie Robinson swinging the willow at the other end, the score looked poised to head well north of 400.
Skipper Ben Stokes had other ideas as he waved them in and put an end to the first innings with the score at 8/393.
The declaration came after only 78 overs making it the earliest declaration in the first innings of an Ashes Test in history.
      4. days later Captain Cum,mins hits the winning runs. Theres the series and English commentators never bring it up. If he was an Aussie or Indian the condemnation would have been savage and rightly so. But I suppose England were "saving cricket" or something.

I’m fed up of watching this England team treat Test matches as a Sunday pub game. They shrug off losses as if they don’t matter. Stokes’s philosophy is great when they are winning but not to adapt style or strategy when the situation demands it, is so frustrating. Crawley seems to be undroppable, he plays great innings occasionally but that can be said of many mediocre county players.

@ For me it’s how they crumble when in trouble and their only answer is to try and hit out, when playing smarter and waiting for the conditions to ease would give them a better chance. This side has suffered two of the highest losses by runs in English test history this year! I disagree that because it is a spinning pitch England are bound to lose. Pakistan produced spinning pitches but the England team refused to bat more carefully. Those players are better than that, refusing to change to the conditions does them a disservice.

He hasnt played a crucial innings with the bat in ages, his bowling is loose often going for 4-5 an over only occasionally picking up a wicket. Players who should keep their spot =duckett, root, brook,Smith, Atkinson, carse and possibly one from Bashir/leach. Smith should come back in as wk. Bethell? Must be a priority over pope. Woakes, stokes need to be up for consideration. Can stokes open instead of crawley? Stokes is a good captain.
