Also if you’re noticing unexplainable hair loss, get that bloodwork done to check first for a Vitamin D deficiency! Most Black folks/dark skinned ppl are deficient because our melanin inhibits us from fully absorbing Vit D into our skin (from the sun). Also checking to see what your iron levels are is super important to hair health too! So many of us are anemic & don’t know OR we do know and don’t do anything about it. I would start w/ Vit D + iron, the basics. But YES to the rest of these tests Kee listed too, if you’re not deficient in either of those. 🙌🏾
Right....I was soooo deficient in vitamin D and Iron.
@@comment2kare Yes, Zinc too!! Thank you. Ever since the panorama (lol), I take these elderberry lozenges from Whole Foods that have Zinc + Vit C in them. Still looking for a good copper supplement. If anyone has suggestions, pls lmk! 🙏🏾
Great point also if you have an autoimmune disorder you might not even absorb as much vitamins as you’re taking and may need a higher dose.
@just2comment99 Be careful with multivitamins, not all absorb well when taken together.

We need more hair stylists like you. Who else would actually go the extra mile and RESEARCH why we have hair loss?
I agree 💯 ❤. Love watching your videos. So amazing to see how you are so gentle with hair. I live in California. Wow love to attend a pop up in cali. You do great work. Keep doing it, it must be a gift from God the almighty. May God continue to bless you. 🙏🤗👏🏽👐🏾🙌
On my hair. And for my curls can you use the hot curling iron. I hate those flatiron any where near my hair.
Thanks and I will be waiting.
Me. I’m a TRICHOLOGIST and that’s what we do. I’ve also been doing hair for 30 years. There are quite a few of us out here.
@@stylesbydeme5444 hi, what part of the world are you in?
We need to create a directory of doctors who are willing to go the mile for the health of their patients and support them. Too many doctors just don't go beyond the basics which is sad.
FACTS!!
Especially for women of color.
I just had topical steroids and doxycycline thrown at me after a dermatologist looked at my scalp for roughly 2 minutes. SMH
@@closest2he4venand men.
@@nicolew6904same! Sorry that happened to you. Did you find a new dermatologist? I had to keep searching until I found one that would do a scalp biopsy. I was diagnosed with Androgenic Alopecia. I’m currently working with a dermatologist and endocrinologist. Unfortunately a lot of doctors don’t listen to black women! Yes I said it.Please continue to advocate for yourself. I wish everyone the best.
I am a thyroid cancer/graves survivor. I literally was only 31 when I found out. I experienced hair thinning ; falling out ; and more. I didn't know why I was just randomly going through these things until I got my TSH/T4 thyroid blood panel. Saved my life because I had no idea I had cancer! Sooo many times our symptoms go ignored when it literally can be the thyroid. (or others) . I have now gotten my thyroid fully removed. Healed from graves diseases and cancer and now my levels have finally gotten normal. My hair has grown allllll the way back and fast and full and healthy. Ladies please go get those levels checked even if you have mild symptoms! I'm 5 years cancer free now with healthy hair :)
Oh wow what a testimony. God bless you.
@gardeniainbloom812 💕💕💕 thank you!
What was your treatment for healing from Graves disease if I may ask please?
Yay, I'm happy you're ok now! Thanks for sharing.
Period!! Thank God for that! I'm so happy for you!
Your hair is definitely one of the areas of the body that shows when you have challenges or illnesses.
Definitely!
I love this insight. I can say that's why I fought so far to keep my legnth, ultimately to hide the imperfections.
Yea, the hair, eyes and skin will tell you a lot.
Yess most definitely, I suffer from ESRD and I'm on dialysis. My hair is literally falling out so bad. It gets thicker but takes so long to get length 🤷🏿🥺. Before dialysis my hair grew so fast albeit the dandruff but at least it retained length. Love these videos they help me get through my day and fight for my future ❤️
I got a new doctor this year and she broke down the TSH/thyroid panel. I've had my thyroid checked several times and it finally showed my thyroid being low. She said that on the surface, it can look normal, but when they break it down, they can see more that's going on. With my meds, the hair fuel vitamins you suggested and sea moss supplements (prevents shedding), my thin and bald spots are filled in. And if you can, see a black woman doctor. They're typically better listeners, and we know how hard they worked to get that degree. Black female doctors have changed and saved my life.
This! I knew from age 13 that I had low thyroid, but when I graduated college and moved away, the doctors all said, "Well yeah, it's a *little * low, but it's low-normal." Like, is that even a thing? It wasn't till my cholesterol was maxed out when I was in my 40s that they'd even run the breakdown. And at the same time, the doctor was saying, "Girl, you've got to lose some weight!" And the doctor was even heavier than I was! But when the tests came back all was revealed. That doctor then retired and her replacement actually listens to me. It's good when you go in and feel like they see and hear you.
Yes to sea moss! And burdock root it also contains 90 plus minerals your body needs as well. Burdock root is a blood purifier, it flushes kidneys, including extar estrogen and fake estrogen that's found in foods. This also works to balance hormones lady.
Many blessings ❤
I love this for you!!
@@DeeperThanHairTv thank you for all of the knowledge and positivity that you share!!!
Oh definitely. I love having doctors that are women of color! So how should I ask for an in-depth thyroid panel? Because I’ve gotten my thyroid checked several times. And, like you said, on the surface. It’s been normal, and I’ve been dismissed.
I am Caucasian & I have undergone many endocrine issues for many years. This includes thyroid issues, hormonal issues, Vitamin D deficiency & adrenal insufficiency. I am a retired RN & found it difficult for MD’s to order the labs you suggested. Insurance can be very picky on some of these tests. In the end it took a holistic/integrative/internal medicine doc to get me on the right track.
After I moved out of state I sought out a similarly skilled physician successfully. The key here is to find a doc that is progressive & thinks out of the box.
I am so very sorry for you. And yeah, insurance can be greedy, man! Why be in the biz that is suppose to help others when you want your own pockets filled instead.
I work for a health insurance company… many of these services and tests cost less than their monthly premiums.
What’s the tests we should request? ❤
Dont put a price tag on your health
I love that you’re telling people to write it down. I am a nurse and often times I hear patients say “the appointment was so fast and I forgot to ask something”.
Yup! I always write it down! It helps me so much
I always have a list because you can get excited talking about one and you forget. I dated a Dr once and he told me always have it written and ask them to explain and write info if you need it.
Almost cried reading the title, my only hair problem is my excessive hair loss, I'm at the point where I'm almost bald at the top and front, my mother had it too, and have been looking for good wigs because I don't want to see my scalp anymore 😥 Thank you so much for this, God bless you 🙏❣❣❣
God bless you as well!! 💜✨🙏🏾
🙏🏾❤️
I had similar issues. Hormones, iron, vitamin D, and magnesium could affect the hair growth. Fenugreek, iron, and prayer corrected my issue.
And some of these issues/symptoms can be due to having PCOS. So that's another thing for women to ask their doctors to check as well since it tends to go undiagnosed for a while 💙 Thank you for speaking on this.
As a healthcare professional I 100% endorse the info and message in this video! Awesome medical literacy tool here!
It’s this kind of video and content that makes this channel standout. It’s definitely way DEEPER THAN HAIR. 🎉 Thanks for sharing all these.♥️
Thanks for watching and adding love and grace!!
I wanted to share two tips about going to the doctor: One is that when you go and explain whatever problem you’re having (any health problem-not just hair loss) try to keep it to one issue at a time. If you mention hair loss and then your back aches and head aches etc. they automatically get overwhelmed when they already have hardly any time for any patients as it is. Another random tip is don’t wear makeup to the doctor. It doesn’t matter if it’s a dermatologist or your regular GP. They prefer to see your skin how it looks naturally because just like you said, skin give a lot of clues and when you cover up the clues, they won’t find them.
Yes. My dermatologist is always happy when I come with no makeup including nail polish. He says that he can’t thoroughly check if the nails are covered in polish. I had no idea, but keep it in mind now.
This video is the truth. On top of having fibroids, which was causing anemia, I found out I had hypothyroidism (was always tired and dragging), vitamin d deficiency and insulin resistance since my teenage years. I finally found doctors willing to listen and help me. I'm on my road to recovery but my hair took a beating (falling out, dry). But I'm so afraid to cut it. I'll keep praying fibroid. Thank you for speaking about this topic. I was feeling alone dealing with this.
You can also ask your clients about recent diet changes. If they are vegan or vegetarian they may have low iron. Iron deficiency can cause anemia which just means that you don't have enough red blood cells carrying oxygen to your organs and muscle and even your scalp. Anemia can cause a number of health issues long term, including hair loss. Tell them to ask their doctor to measure their iron levels the next time they go in.
Thanks so much for this addition to the list! The video I did about my hair loss, I named all the micro deficiencies to get tested for as far as vitamins. I did that for myself too! But when it still wasn't working fast enough, I went to the doc wit my sex hormone demands and got straight to the root of it! I'm so grateful! Vitamins are amazing but your sex hormones gotta be balanced in order for everything to work together in your favor. Thanks so much for watching my channel and adding love to it! 💜✨
Vegans and vegetarians are actually less likely to have low iron than meat eaters..
@@depressedandwelldressed5489 Respectfully this is just not true. Especially if you're female and still menstruating
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6367879/
This was happening to me!! NEVER KNEW about low iron being the cause of hair loss!!
My hairloss was due to vitamin d deficiency. My internist said it was the lowest in any patient he ever saw (and he's the top in our state). I still remember getting the call while i was in GNC. I was like, "perfect timing, im in GNC now!". He said, "Ma'am, there's nothing in that store you can buy to get your levels up!"
I was on 50k iu for 2 years straight. Hair is back full.
Everything else was ruled out.
Please note that sometimes you need to go beyond the basic blood work that is given at your local clinic or you primary care doctor. My internist literally ran every test he could to make sure he left no stone unturned. Thankfully, now we are able to see previous bloodwork dating dating back years from multiple providers. I could see where the bloodwork from other providers made it seem as if everything was ok.... but it wasn't
I broke a bone in my foot and the Dr was the one who said I bet your vitamin D is low. I went back the next week she said you're 12.5 your critical. So I said what vitamin do I need I'll pick it up. She said I need you to call your primary Dr immediately. The med she gave me was replensa(?) 50k units once a week I'm on week 2. So I looked it up and saw hair loss. I told the foot Dr I did notice hair change and couldn't figure it out. I sweat a lot working out running so I went back to a relaxer. When I was 39 I was natural for years and worked out and wore it straight then. So I cut it short and relaxed then I grew it out went back natural 2 years but that sweat is different at 55 I kept it straight in a 4A. Anyway I've been back with my relaxer my hair has been excellent. The Dr said it will take many months till my numbers even get to the lowest which is 30.
Mind you I haven't really seen any abnormal shed but I could see to me my hair was not 100. My hair dresser who is old school said my hair is healthy she's cut off any mess..
But I see saw some changes cause my hair is normally dense and in the back it was not as thick... Also I was on aBP water pill which can effect hair which I'm no longer on and figured it will take a few till that med is out system.
How long was it that you noticed a difference after taking vitamin D?
Thank you for the info too...
This conversation is perfect timing. I have an osteopathic doctor who requested a drug panel for EVERYTHING. 20 tubes of blood everything to get to the bottom of my hair thinning and other things. My doctor is far more patient than a regular md. I’ve seen my doctor for well over an hour because she doesn’t rush me. They seem to care more in my opinion. I’m not even 30. Our hair is our crown and it always shows where you are health wise.
Oh my gosh I was going to make a video just like this!!! Because I suffered from anemia hair loss, thyroid hair loss and vitamin D deficiency. It’s so important!! People think they’re thinning naturally or going gray early but it could be underlying health issues. Thanks for speaking on this ❤
Do a video too! We need all the insight we can get! 🤞🏾✨💜
I can't say enough about how grateful I am to have found your channel many months ago! Every video gives me a warm caress that's reminding me what God whisperd to me in 1992 - "Whoever told you your nappy hair is bad - that wasn't Me"!! That was the beginning of my precious Loc journey, and I've never looked back. However, I've never had the privilege of having someone touch my hair with the gentleness, respect, and honoring that I see you give everyone you serve. If you could see me right now as I've finished this video, you'd wonder why tears are streaming down my face. It's bitterseet, because what I see in you is something I long for. At 70, I'm well aware I grew up in a time when all my mom knew to do was "wash" my hair with Prell - which made it feel like a brillo pad😢. Loc'ing was the first time I felt free. They hang down my back near my waist & stop people in their tracks. But I would love to have a new kind of freedom, where I have the healthiest nappy hair on earth but flowing free, and with a versatility my current locs can't give me. When I watch you work your magic, Kee, I often well up, both with delight & longing. Todays information was powerful - so much a part of the nurturer you are!!!
Thank you for your transparency, vulnerability, and loving kindness. You are a balm to Black women like me who grew up far away from the standard called "good" hair. It was painful, and there's still a little girl inside me that is touched by you. Blessings!!!❤❤❤❤
Wow this was beautiful to read! I thank you so much for being here and I pray you find the added freedom you need to march forward! You've come so far already on this beautiful journey!
Awwwwww!! Tears poppin' again! Next time I'm in LA, I'ma track you down & come begging!❤😂😢😊😂
Cause yes, daughter - it's SO much deeper than hair!!!❤❤❤❤
absolutely beautiful🥲
I just heard Pastor Mike say this & It was so on point...Thanks for the confirmation. "Will you just REIGN w/me or Can you stand the RAIN w/me.
Speak on it sis! I found out that the issues with my hair was caused due to auto-immune issues. My flourished once diagnosed. I also had low Vit D and Iron which can contribute to hair loss. Thanks for always having our backs. Blessings and continued success as always xxx
Thank you! In so glad you found that out!
This video is one of the single most reasons why i enjoy you tube. The education part of it. And people who care enough to share COREECT info and aren't just money grabbers. God continue to bless and keep you, beautiful sister. Us ladies (and men) need more stylist like yourself.
Thanks so much for being here!
My hair thinned out really badly in 2020. I lost about 40-50% of my hair and it seemed to come out of nowhere. Not just my hair on my head but all over my body essentially stopped growing. I went to get blood work and found out I had somewhat normal iron but very low ferritin and also had extremely low vitamin D. Be sure to ask them to check your ferritin too in addition to iron. Ferritin is basically your iron stores and when this number is low usually there is hair thinning. Most times you have to ask them to check this as well because they may only check iron and iron saturation.
Thank you! I will add ferritin to the list.😊
Thank you!
@@DeeperThanHairTv 😊♥️
May ask how low? Mine was 19 . My doctor didn't seemed concerned. She said I could take iron if I wanted. My hair in thee front is thinning like crazy.
@@Simone-ki1nn It was 14 when I started and they gave me the same suggestion that I could take it if I wanted to, but when symptoms got worse that's when I went to a different doctor and they recommended it. My symptoms were tingling in my hands & feet, feeling cold and tired all the time, I had cracks on the side of my lip that would appear out of nowhere, and hair all over my body stopped growing. Mine is a 61 now, which is great.
I just saved this video Kee!! My hair went through a really stressful period last year . I went into menopause at 42 ,but my hair was still thriving in spite of . Last year my hair just starting thinning out and my stylist had to end up taking off a significant amount of which really end up making me so sad ,because my hair had grown past the middle of my back which was the longest it had ever been in my life. I ended up going to the doctor and had some of the panels you mentioned done . It ended up being my vegan lifestyle. I wasn't getting enough of the nutrients that i needed . So me and my doctor came to a compromise. He put me on a 80/20 nutrition regime. My plate now 80 percent plant based and 20 percent animal protein. The health of my hair has improved significantly. I also have incorporated sea moss and collagen and i can definitely tell the difference. My hair is noticeably thicker than what it was and there has been less shedding 😁
I love that for you!! My vegan lifestyle is when it started getting bad!! Imagine I turned vegan on top of already having insulin resistance and high testosterone! A disaster! I didn't even know anybody it but my hair made me aware!
@DeeperThanHairTv .. Thanks, 🤗Kee
I congratulate anyone with the discipline and strength to be a veggie or vegan.
Says the one who got to have red meat and sour cream and a little cheese here and there ( me ).
But I'm dead serious, so sorry the diet, a very nice diet, did not fully work out for you. If it is meant to be, I hope both you and Kee can get back to being full blown vegan.
@holyexperience1976 ...thank you 🤗

You are most welcome! 🤗
Hey Kee- High testosterone, insulin resistance, hair loss, & weight gain may point to PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). It usually develops in adolescence.
Ladies, make sure you ask your doctor for a FULL thyroid panel. It includes these 6 tests:
TSH, Free T4, Free T3, RT3, Anti Thyroglobulin Antibodies, TPO antibodies
I had the best luck with functional MD’s. They are physicians with additional training in integrative medicine.
Hi! Yup thats exactly what I have.
Could you recommend some functional MD’s ? My hair has been thinning and shedding for the past couple years
The blood is the life. ❤ I’m so grateful for the light and knowledge you’re sharing. Endocrine system, hormones and all that stuff is our life book. She’s saying go get your book and study what the results are. Consistent physical movement - walking, dancing, stepping and throw on some wrist weights and tension bands. Eat good food drink water laugh play and sleep well. Thanks Lady. 💚🧘🏾♂️
My hair was thinning. I find going to the doctor is pretty much useless. I took it into my own hands. Starting drinking collagen peptide powder daily and at the same time went off of the standard American diet (SAD) and I’m now on an animal based lifestyle (yes carnivore). Not only lost 100 or so pounds but my hair is thicker fuller and denser than ever but my gut microbiome is in check and I feel amazing. Too many carbohydrates/sugars will wreck your health. I also take 10,000iu of vitamin D with K2 daily but if I’m out in the sun during the summer with shorts and sleeveless shirt for at least 20 or so minutes, I don’t generally take it. During the winter I take it daily. It is about what you eat.
If you’re overweight, that is a sign of insulin resistance/sensitivity and poor metabolic health. Cutting out the ultra processed foods and consuming high amounts of animal protein and intermittent fasting works.
Remember the so called health care system in America is a joke. They make money when we’re sick and fat. The pharmaceutical companies want us all on their pills so they make money.
You're awesome. I agree with you about doctors. I've seen my share in the last 20 years, and I feel like no one listens. ❤❤❤
@@absinthemindedJ thank you. They aren’t taught nutrition in medical school. They’re taught to prescribe medicine and surgery. Remember good food is medicine. Bad food and you take medicine. A pill will treat the symptoms with side effects. The proper human diet will prevent the issues in the first place.
@TheePrettyGirlSwag my mom and brother recently started a carnivore diet. Food is medicine! 💯
@@TheePrettyGirlSwagcan’t agree more! All most doctors do is give meds or tests they rarely even ask about your diet or mention nutrition/ vitamins affect health so much. Its amazing you did that all yourself thanks for sharing.
@@cleocatra9324 thank you. I always joke the doctors here on TH-cam have done more for my health than any I’ve ever seen in person. I’m so forever grateful to them & not charging me one dime to change my life.
Thank you so much for this information Sis. I'm currently struggling with balding, hair loss and texture issues. I'm old school. So we weren't taught to ask for these particular tests. And besides that most doctors just spit out the word alopecia for black women. Oppose to diving deeper into the root cause. So we unfortunately just end up suffering in silence.

OMG! Thank you so much for this video! I made an appointment with my doctor!
It's awesome that you take the time to educate yourself and your clients. Like you mentioned, I was eating right and exercising and a stylist who I went to one (and only one time) insisted that my hair challenges was beacause I didn't eat right based on her seeing me not knowing me. Thankfully, I had just had an MD visit with labs and knew the real reason behind all of it. She took one look at me and made assumptions, and spent the majority of the appointment telling me what I should be eating.
Your hair looks amazing! Great tips for the doctor and your client’s hair is beautiful

Really good video! I agree. My son is now two and I was still losing hair. I had a previous conversation with my doctor and she said postpartum let it run it’s course… fast forward I went for my yearly and we had another conversation and she did bloodwork- my hemoglobin and iron was soooo low it was scary. I had to get a blood transfusion and iron infusion. Got a referral to a dermatologist as well. So yes, it requires a conversation if you’re loosing your hair! Great video!!!
Yes, please make the video explaining your hair journey and what took place to get your beautiful hair growth. My hair thinning and shedding are at both temple areas on both sides. Your videos are so informative. Thanks for being such and asset to the hair community.
Rachel's hair looked lovely. I am so glad you did this video loads of people just say take biotin and use a hair growth oil which is completely wrong. I just want to advise as well to check iron and vitamin d levels. Cut down on sugar and salt and exercise is important for your skin and hair. Also wash your scalp and hair regularly.
And get enough sleep.
And water!
Add vitamin K2 to D3.
Love this!!! I need to get my blood work done soon and will be requesting these tests. Thank you!!!!

Wow it’s beautiful! Look at that growth!!!
Her hair looks gorgeous and thank you for the information.
She looks fabulous!!! Kee, thank you for mentioning the need to test both T3 and T4 levels when hypothyroidism is suspected!!! Most doctors will only test your T4, which is an old fashioned protocol, unless you specifically ask them to include a test for T3. The issue is you may have quite enough T4 but your body can’t convert T4 to T3 (the usable hormone). Trust your intuition. If you think something isn’t right it isn’t.

Hi Kee!! This was right on time. I’m saving this video as well for a reference. I was just saying I need some tests ran to check levels that may be contributing to my hair thinning. About a year ago I went through a traumatic life event causing depression and stress and I also entered into peri-menopause. I still haven’t gone into full menopause because I had a couple peek-a-boo spottings. 🙄 I love your channel. It’s something about your aura, it gives off very refreshing and positive vibes. And then when you speak, it’s very gentle and caring which makes someone want to listen. ❤ I’m about an hour from LA and would definitely travel to get my hair done. Don’t know how long your stays are in LA or if you’re taking new clients but yes to the pop up shop in LA. Much love and many blessings to you! 💞
I pray you get everything back in track. 🙏🏾 I actually live in LA 💜✨ I'll announce my pop-up if I have one.
@@DeeperThanHairTv Thank you so much. Oh you live in LA, that’s even better. 🥰 I’ll be waiting if you decide to. 💞
As always you did a beautiful job! I love your words of wisdom before each video💜💜
❤ Your hair care tutorials. Thank you for being so helpful, knowledgeable, and transparent.
Thank you for watching! You are appreciate!
As a health pro, thanks for mentioning the all 3 of the first thyroid markers. Many thyroid lab orders that come in often do not include all 3 markers unless explicitly requested by a specialist or patient, which delays complete testing and good patient care.
💜✨
I love that this channel lives up to it's name♡
Thank you for giving people the language to advocate for myself.
Is such a blessing when you teach us about our hair I wish you could do a pop up in Las Vegas. Thank you for all you do blessings to you 😊
Thank you for educating us.

This is why I love your videos so informative. ❤
I love you Kee! Only a real friend would give us all deets Like you did. Thanks so much!
Love you back!!
I am really emotional seeing this video, and I thank you so much for explaining my stress on my hair and health. It is an unhappy morning every day. I am lost on my hair and doctors😢
IM definitely going to share this with my clients and going to go to my doctor AGAIN with these tests
This is good! Even though I've had most of these test done at least now I know what to go back to look for. Most of the tests that's ran on us are a foreign language & we don't know how to read it. Thank you so much for breaking this down like you did.
❤❤❤ i love meeting new Rachels.. you’re so amazing. I love your page
You are doing such a great job of sharing information about hair health, keep up the good work and may God bless you richly!
Thanks and the same to you!
These quotes be hitting! Love it all Sis! ❤❤🎉🎉
