With the rising costs of living and stagnant salary/wages, these dollar stores are more important than ever. I know I'll be buying more items there now, not just snacks
The directors are so candid. Enterprise spirit. Thanks for helping the Singaporean to get some product value for money and being honest about the industry.
In a world of capitalism.. Value $ just gives us more options across all income brackets, really appreciate that. At least if I had a choice of paying less for perceived lower quality vs not being able to afford them, I rather have that choice than to have none at all.
I usually don't have good impressions of owners of big companies, perhaps due to a perceived sense that they would tend to prioritise earning big profits over selling products at a lower price to help the masses, but these 3 guys from Rahda Export seem to give off a different vibe. They even seem likeable.
I wish radha export all the best. Yes, we need more shops like this. Did you hear that snacks/drinks/biscuits/chocolates sold at value $ , is less sweet than supermarket ones.
For sure many Singaporeans can well afford better quality household products because of the higher income in general. But what I observed was that stores like Valu$ provide options for lower income groups and migrant workers. At least there's options if you want to reduce household spending or discretionary spending (snacks, soft drinks) so that you wouldn't be "struggling" with the rising costs.
FairPrice long ago alr not so fair in their price. If u see their shampoo and conditioner is the most overpriced as compared to Venus beauty. Tat is why i don’t buy frm FairPrice anymore.
Parallel Import is cheaper because they are made for sale in developing countries. In other words, the food manufacturers are price discriminating and selling into Singapore for a lot more due to the higher income (and thus ability to pay) here. Magnum ice cream cost $1.20sgd in indonesia but $5.50sgd in Singapore; former is just a tad smaller :)
That's an incorrect explanation and description of parallel import. Parallel imports simply means that the product is bought from a seller in another country and imported into your own country by yourself or someone else other than the authorised agent or distributor in your country. They may or may not necessarily be meant for developing countries. The cost savings can come from a variety of sources. Currency differences is only one of them. The other areas where you definitely save is the costs that authorised distributors have which you don't. Distributors have to maintain an inventory, put in place a system for warranty and claims, set aside capital for warranties, bankers guarantee, incidences etc, and other things that the manufacturer may require in order to be given the distributorship. As a parallel importer, you don't have any of these costs because you're buying from a third-party and not the manufacturer. Hence, all the conditions imposed by the manufacturer don't apply to you, and you don't have to answer to them as well.
@@sleepy_dobe You forgot 2 other important factors : 1) Advertising/Promotion cost : As an appointed agent for a product/brand. You have to incur a large sum of money of advertisements & promotions either written into the sole agency / distributor agreement or for yourself to market the product. Parallel marketers need not incur such cost as they are not bind by any agreements by the seller. 2) Product/Brand positioning : This is lesser known but important for people to be aware of. Most products esp if they are western brands will be sold at very high markups. This is because they want to position their products as premium etc. And that is also what enables such companies to have plush airconditioned and carpeted offices or buildings and having management teams that are paid more a month than what a worker gets in a developing country in over 2 or more yrs. Likewise if you had followed closely to the recent entrance of Krispy Kreme into Spore. They mentioned that they need to study the market to do the pricing etc. What does that mean? Simple : Donuts are actually made from 3 very cheap ingredients : Flour, sugar and the oil used for frying. Just go top the smkt to check out how much these costs if you are not familiar to cooking/baking. So what do they mean by positioning? If the current market is dominated by say Dunkin Donut and neighborhood bakeries on the other extreme end, and Krispy Kreme wants to position themselves as even more premium then the current 2, they will study their prices and ensure that their products are priced even higher. In such cases, the ingredient costs are actually secondary. All that excuses about distances/transportation is also BS. Take for example, Australia is closer to Spore than South Korea is. But Australian products will generally also cost more due to Australians expecting higher salaries, period. And if you are still not convinced, let me give you another example. A pair of branded sports shoes made in Vietnam is very cheap. But if it is marketed directly by their brand owners, the price goes up at least 5 folds. People, educate yourselves : Those products DO NOT come from the West. Heck, half of the famous Walmart of the USA is not even made in USA, just branded as an American brand, that's all. LOL. A lot of these products play on the minds of the consumers. Sometimes the best way to treat yourself is to do your own blind taste test. A western brand need not always be a better, tastier product. But if buying and paying lots more for a brand and that it comes with a paper bag etc that display the brand name & screams you can afford that brand makes you feel good esp in the eyes of your friends, then by all means go for it if you can afford it. There is no right or wrong. But for the majority of the population that feels the pinch from the current global inflation/shrinkflation, every little bit of savings is appreciated.
For Magnum Ice Cream, the version in Indonesia and Malaysia are made in Malaysia but the ones in Singapore are from Europe, so in terms of quality and ingredients its not the same.
A lot of dry food products like biscuits have best before date instead of expiry. Even after the stated date you can still eat them, they just won't taste as good or as crisp.
Most pple buy to consume, not for storing. Even then, a bar of choc, when kept in the fridge for say 3mths past its so-called expiry date can still be eaten. Most of us do that occasionally, the rest who proclaim they dun are usually liars. Not forgetting that CNA already did an episode on this already and debunked this myth. Some pdts like fresh dairy or bread of cos adhere strictly to expiry dates but these are not the items we r talking abt here.
The Amn Ruffles chips that used to be imported from US is now from China. And it doesnt taste as good. The US company licensed Chinese companies to produce and export but they still cost the same. So clever. The taste used to differ significantly, but they've been closing the taste gap.
at times there's a surplus of stocks in the other countries so they sell in bulk and lower prices to SG to get rid of excess stock. Thats why the cheaper prices also. But I do think the taste of some snacks in value stores are not as good as supermarket or slightly more ex kind.
Im well to do but i always buy things from Venus beauty instead of Watsons - no point paying more for the exact same thing. But for food, i will stick to NTUC instead of Value$. Only go Value$ for household cleaning products.
Tianma in general is cheaper than Valu.. but in my observation they sell lesser important things.. like unknown brand of snacks and canned drinks.. so is like I might spend $5 in Tianma vs $10 in Valu because of tis..
😮 Rule of thumb ... Anything that is very discounted in price is either a defective product or a fake product & anything that is overpriced is considered a luxury or limited collector's item. Buying from direct or authorised retailer & sticking to normal price products to get the real & better made products! Common sense & logic! 😊🙏🕯🌍✌🕊
I somehow agree too. Not sure why but the editing and the content doesn't seem CNA at all, more like what Mothership or what those local youtube channels will churn out.
Radha export so sporting, willing to talk to you guys in such a short notice. Truly community spirit enterprise.
Ya lor didn't expect the big shots from Radha export to give interview.
agree that's pretty cool of them
Thank you valuedollar and venus beauty for allowing to survive through the inflations ❤

Value$ shops can be the upcoming supermarket for the masses as inflations increases
Thanks for covering the topic and making this series!!

The bad videography might be intentional, but the series still reveals good info on various topics.

Thanks for doing the deliberations for me. I’ll shop at Value Store more often now.
Video editing and style are giving Mothership (derogatory)
Value$ is value for $ & FairPrice is not so fair after all!

@@sleepy_dobe i used to only eat crispy cream in thailand.. it used to cost 1/4 the price of the donut in sg
Kudos to Radha exports.
Quite an amateurish short documentary coming from CNA.
Hope to feature more funny n catchy, short storeis! Great job team! Do a story on recycling pls? And anywheel... and hope to c more!
Take note of the expiry date as most rock bottom price products sold there left 2-3 months before expire

Value $ always around near cinemas in neighbourhood 😅
Oh well tbh, 95% of food in sg is imported. Yes we need more stores like this. Yes correct win win situation and saving for us consumer
The voice recording during the taste test is muffled, hard to understand what the hosts are saying
M&Ms from supermarkets are worst tasting chocolates as they are made in china.
M&Ms from value stores are the best.
I totally agree. The M&M is the best!

omg i saw sherman’s march poster!! HAHAHA so cute
The one labelled supermarket had more sugars.....
Not necessarily worse tasting. Sometimes might taste even better but most of the time, the parallel import snacks are inferior
only that potato chip brand is same. and kinder bueno. but no more offer. last time 3x2 for 2.95.
Yes radha export have been around for 30 years
Im well to do but i always buy things from Venus beauty instead of Watsons - no point paying more for the exact same thing. But for food, i will stick to NTUC instead of Value$. Only go Value$ for household cleaning products.
