    Without this guy, I truly wouldn't be the same person. The first Rayman was my very first game and it instantly got my heart with its cartoon looks. I played through the three first games dozens of times and and I also beat the spin-offs/remakes.
    I even have the Rayman figurine which was available to preorders for Revolution, which was also my first PS2 game.
    Some of the best moments of my childhood are linked to Ancel's work, I hope I can meet him someday to thank him for making me love videogames.

      @rebelscum1925 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He wasn't really much involved with the development in Rayman 3 wich you can notice in the gameplay, story and quality. Rayman 3 isn't bad. Hell I love it. But you can see in the game the the original maker was less involved

    • @ralpholiver2889
      @ralpholiver2889 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@rebelscum1925 But it has really so little to do with Rayman 2. Save for a few mechanics, characters and nostalgia references/easter eggs, anyone playing R3, expecting to find reminiscences of previous installments will be left utterly disappointed. I think the main thing is that there was an extra care in Rayman 2 for everything to have a more unique meaning and personality: from levels names being more unique and recognizable to lums being part of and justified by the plot, R2 managed to balance platforming, gameplay and story in a much better way than Rayman 3, which gave you lots of random elements and sort of useless point system, with absolutely nothing from the game really being remarkable (albeit it is still fun to play and has beautiful scenery here and there).

    Michel Ancel is a legend in my book. Rayman 2 is one of my favorite platformers from its time and Rayman Origins/Legends are two of the greatest 2-D platformers of all time, thanks in large part to Michel's brilliant artwork and the gorgeous, expressive animation. It's so awesome you got him to be a guest!

    • @Skinkemann
      @Skinkemann 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Relytia Oh yeah, totally! :D While there are a lot of great new platformers, I feel like Origins/Legends suddenly sprouted from the ether as true modern classics. Such pure, exuberant games! They express a certain beautiful mystery and joie de vivre, which I think is true of all of Michel's games. He is awesome!

      I never played the original Raymans (unless you count the GBA one), but you're so right about Origins and Legends, those are some of my favorite games ever. I've been waiting like 6 or 7 years for a sequel to Legends, I really don't want to see Rabbids anymore. They were funny for their time, but they aren't really doing anything with their story. I think Mario saved them with Mario + Rabbids.

    I'd love to see this game remade... but I feel like something would be lost in translation. There's something intoxicating and wondrous about the world of Rayman 2. You see these surreal natural environments merging with greasy cast iron pirate structures... and it makes for such an engaging world to explore. You don't see imagination like that anymore in games. The last game I can recall really pulling off the "nature meets iron" approach in a really well done way was Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath which is just an *exceptional* game on all accounts. It's art direction, gameplay and it's central "hook" is so unique and there's not another game out there quite like it. It deserves so much more love.
    Likewise, Rayman 2 deserves a remake... provided they don't lose anything in translation.

    At 2:54 I was not expecting to see my video about the VMU screen animation of R2 being used in the interview, it was fun :P. But what I was not expecting was that odd reveal about "Beneath the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava", I think I will nevermore see the same area in the Dreamcast version in the same way again haha 'xD! Very good interview, I do hope the company considers a new 3D platform of Rayman in future, I am sure many players and fans would be very happy to see such reality :).

    17:30 - And that's where the magic of 'Order-Independent Transparency' comes in:
    Dreamcast's implementation was so ahead of its time, it adressed an issue that would persist throughout the 360/PS3 era!
    256 layers which were never given full use...
    Just to put into perspective - Even Crysis had transparency problems within the deep jungles.

    +DoubleFine - Tim and all you dudes, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE VIDEOS!!! Also thank you Michel Ancel for this one, and it was great having Lee there, when you've had Greg there to play and ask questions the episodes have been less informative to development as he's more like most of us normal people (lol) and we're all learning as listen, but Lee was able to converse with Ancel and has his own informed views on design through years of expertise, which made him very interesting to listen to and have in the room with Ancel.
    Developers sharing their insight is kind of the point of this right? I like Greg being there and playing, no offense to the guy, but make more space in that room, zoom the face camera out(!!!) and get other staff in the room too so more often we can listen to someone like Anna (or now Lee) that's been in the industry for years share their experiences with other developers. Please have Lee or some of the other staff there again, if they have the time. ;) It will only make this show go from strength to strength as a great source of knowledge for aspiring developers.
    My two cents, cheers for everything so far Tim and Co.

    I truly can't thank you guys enough for this, and cannot stress how this got to be one of the most interesting things I've ever witnessed. Rayman 2 was basically my first 'real' game, the first I ever played that had an actual storyline, places to explore, and not just an arcade or mini-game. I was five years old when I played the demo, and now, 20 solid years later, I cannot recall staying more than a month away from it. Specially now I started making real games, I often find myself going back to it no longer to play, but to study, since it was so well done. Even though technology wasn't so kind at the time, it still remains as one of the most beautiful graphics I've seen in a game, and just like its gameplay mechanics, difficulty and so many other things, everything is pretty much balanced in this. Being able to witness the creator himself discussing its development, while looking at it, is very much valuable and priceless. Thank you Michael Ancel for this incredible game, and thank you guys for this amazing video!

      +Dandily Hickson Hmm whatever happened to BG&E2? I remember they announced it and released trailers for it several years ago.

    I got this game for pc in a scholastic book fair. I had a shitty windows 95 pc that wouldn't even run the game lol. I was able to take it to my cousins house and play like half the game but never beat it

    I wished you said something about rayman 4 if Michael wants to see rayman 4 as a 3d platformer or a 2d platform and If he wants to help making it

      They already have a 2d platformer franchise!
      We want a real Rayman 4 with as great and grand atmosphere and environment as Rayman 3
