You touch on why the ancients wrote mythology. Silly stories are left alone by those who come along to edit and change. But those silly stories contain the deep truth. Original Old Testament writings were edited by Ezra who was Babylonian (Today we would call him an Iraqi). The King James Bible translates from the Greek and is so close that when the translator was not sure of the writing it is put into the book in italics and you can find that to this day.
