I saw this as a child, I always liked the scene where the woman, who is a friend to the unicorn, still cries and curses the unicorn for not showing up when she was young and beautiful and full of hope. I do not know why but even as a little boy I found that moment so human and resonant. It has always struck me how you don't see such moments in Disney films. I wondered if the Unicorn had married Lir if the children of Lir would have had magic running through their blood. And now that I'm an adult I think that would make a decent set up for a dark fantasy novel if you could work all the formative bits out.
I felt the same way as you about that scene as a child. Years later, I heard from someone who'd also read the book that he book adds context to that scene. I don't know myself. I have never read the book.
Mr Burns is voiced by Christopher Lee who also voiced the german dub, because he knew german, and his accent gave the character a very unique and stunning appearance.
I love The Last Unicorn, book and movie; always have. It's a great movie to end another wonderful 12 Days of Xmas. Thanks for all you do Georg and Happy Christmas to you and Christina.
Begged my father to take me to see this when it came out when I was ten and had my mind blown and eyes watered. No regrets in my seat but silence of different kinds from both. Thank you, dad.
Saw this one like two weeks ago. Loved it. This is definitely a movie that will make kids contemplate life more so I think this is a movie kids should see, and many adults as well. Characters die and the storytelling is mature.
This one and "Watership down" were made in the days where Parents were like: "It´s animated, must be for Kids, so go and watch it and leave me alone for a while". Quite the stuff for nightmares...both of them.
I really want to show this one to my daughter on Christmas...but each year i think: Naaaah...might be a bit too young still. I guess 8-10 would be ok. What do you guys think?
Wow, just a few days ago a review of The Last Unicorn was recommended to me. This movie is good, like The Labyrinth and Dark Crystal my kids have to have their brains warped in the same way as I did so we can talk about dorky things together when they grow up. Totally child appropriate. . .
The first time I saw this movie, I was 26 and tripping on acid. At the end of the movie I looked at my friends and proclaimed loudly "was this all just about having your first period‽"
@@falgalhutkinsmarzcal3962 I remember that one and that's a great quote. Ommadon does get some great lines in the film. "Bryagh, Bryagh! Fetch me the fool."
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is my favorite movie. I bet the studio wouldn't have gone out of business if they had better merchandising. Hundreds of dollars worth of Nausicaa merchandise is released every year.
I have always appreciated the unique motivation (or perhaps more accurately, anti-motivation) of King Haggard. He is totally unable to be happy at all except in the presence of unicorns. Given that, I can’t even blame him for everything he does-I mean, what would you do if you were in that situation? Such an interesting character. I love this movie (I’ve easily seen it a hundred times) but it’s a film of mixed quality.
I remember my mother telling me that this was the very first movie she seen in the cinema. I always think about that when this film is mentioned since it's a pretty surprising film to be your first...I think my first movie was Sherk or something which certainly shows the different generations. I guess they are kind of similar though, both fairy tale stories that don't follow the expected ideas of their genre.
There seems to have been a trend of slightly seedy western animated fantasy in the early 80s. Characters that talk like bob Dylan and general demoralising tone. Like if a writers room full of orcs were asked to write an elf ballad but cannot resist expressing their contempt..
Thank you for covering this movie. I wish it was shown more love. However, I must disagree about the soundtrack. I thought it was uplifting and emotional. I playfully sang "That's all I've Got To Say" and was 'attacked' hugged' by my lady.

In the way a stranger loves a stranger who they watch videos of.

"Oh God, I'm engaged to a Douglas fir." is HILARIOUS!! Didn't realize this was a movie that would have comedy line like that.
King Haggard is one of my favorite antagonists of all time. The man just wants to be happy
Christopher Lee voiced him like like noone else could!
In the German version, he is dubbin himself, making it also a great experience.
Proto-Ghibli is what my boyfriend calls his - HIPTANG
Nice

I grew up with this and have developed a re-appreciation for it as of late. It really is a quality fantasy movie.
Those songs by the great band called America are gorgeous, I’m so sorry you can’t see that.
The songs were one of my favorite aspects of the film, besides all of the rest of the film. 😊❤
I loved this movie as a kid, thank you, Merry Christmas you cheeky bastard
Happy Xmas Georg - hope Santa sends you and Christina some hiptang!
Happy Xmas to you too!
a forgotten classic
Thanks, George. Merry Christmas!
That reminds me, I've been meaning to watch Flight of Dragons again. I haven't seen it since I was 10.
Yesss, I had it taped off ABC back in the 80's, watched it a zillion times. James Earl Jones is wonderfully unhinged as Omedon.
He talked about a Rancanbass film. I never thought I’d see the day.
Looks beautiful
Love the movie and have started reading the book for the first time today. Perfect timing!
My mom took me to see this in the cinema. I'll never forget that experience.
Seasons Greetings everyone!
Ok, tomorrow's one has to be 'Threads'.
A little prophetic this holiday season, aren't we?
@@EbonySaints To be fair, 'They've done it' could only have been from one thing.
Obsessed with this movie as a kid and baby lol
On the "chosen music breaks the tone" aspect the same can be said for 1985's "Ladyhawk".
And Matthew Broderick
One of my favorite movies from when I was a kid ❤️
Great movie.
Merry Christmas to you and yours Georg! Thanks for making this channel & all the best to you in the coming the year
Topcraft made Flight of Dragons too if I remember right, another excellent animated film with James Earl Jones voicing the villain.
"I will teach Man to fly like a fairy..."

Charlie the unicorn is right below this in my subscriptions 😂
I remember watching this drunk at my parents house on bbc2 on Tuesday morning
An interesting mix

First anime (proper) I can recall having seen.
I’m appreciative that “Unicorn Wars” from last year seems to do well in keeping with the tradition of the fantastical with some brutality mixed in.
Had a great drinking game to this acid trip of a movie
God, I'd forgotten I'd even seen this.

Surprised that nobody has mentioned "the Last Unicorn" track from the movie. Easily one of my best-enduring memories of that movie.
I have very clear memories of that damn skeleton from my childhood. But nothing else from this movie.
one of the christmas 'hope on celluloid' movies you may go to. (works also outside of christmas times)
The Last Unicorn wouldn’t be the last if only they drank Hiptang.
Is tomorrows video about Threads?
one of the best romantic comedies ever made. up there with salo!
A couple years ago it was Come and See lol
I've been waiting 1 year for this day
@@Fr.O.G.great one :)
You might be right
Tomorrow's better not be Threads.
I like your videos very much. They Make me wish I was as clever as you are.
It's interesting to note that the book itself has a few tone-breaking moment. I wouldn't be surprised that the soundtrack does that on purpose.
Ask your Doctor if Hiptang is right for you.
It's not.
*Tell your doctor to say Hiptang™ is good for you.
Funny, just seen that movie yesterday
Oh hello childhood trauma, had seen this since it destroyed me when I was like 6
This looks fantastic. I'm wondering if you've seen Son of The White Mare?
Ask your reluctant cat if Hiptang is right for him
My co-op doesn't have Hiptang. LIDL might not be so diligent.
The novel is excellent, even if I cannot stand the Beatnik butterfly. The novel's sequel novella is also good.
Better than any ai or even cg. A bunch of people hand-drawn this. Every frame like most early anime is a triumph with signs of human frailty.
I dressed as Lady Amalthea for Halloween this year. No one got the reference unfortunately
I appreciate your niche costume pick, shame nobody picked on what it was.
Unicorn overlord. Not a bad game. Hiptang
Those aren't jugs on that tree...
'Ay gurl, what dem burls do?'
My mom turns tricks behind a dumpster for a hit of Hiptang™️.

The film where animation peaked, not even Miyazaki's studio can hit that powerful height and they have been trying for over 40 years
If your childhood trauma is defined by a PG-rated mainstream film, good for you I guess
please dont be threads
