I get exactly what you saying, I know a lot of others compress first but if u doing bedroom vocals u better be eq-ing first. Lol. Unless u got a solid studio booth
Compression is primarily controlling dynamics not boosting, that’s a secondary benefit. All that to say, if the incoming signal isn’t too problematic, compression first is worth considering
Always EQ before compression but I’ve never de-Essed before my initial compressor… I like this logic though, totally makes sense how you put it, I’m gonna try it out. Nice one
IF THE AUDIO ISNT PROBLEMATIC THEN TYPICALLY ILL COMPRESS FIRST JUST TO TAME THE TRANSIENTS THEN SHAPE AND SCULPT WITH EQ…IF I EQ INITIALLY THEN WHY COMPRESS BEING THAT IT COULD POTENTIALLY REINTRODUCE SOME UNWANTED FREQUENCIES BAXK INTO THE SPECTRUM
Compression squishes everything together. Doesn’t really care what you like or don’t about the signal. I like to eq and de-s after for a precise look at that I’m doing. Obviously you can do what you like though 👍
Why would I not just increase the volume of the channel once I have de-essed and EQ'd the track? What does compression give you that volume doesn't, once you have processed the signal?
I usually put a CLA2A on the third strip cause I know I'm gonna use it. Then I start with a limiter and then EQ and maybe a de-eser before the EQ if I'm using a condenser.
@AD4 it can help some. but you dont ever want that to be an issue to start with. enough space between the voice and microphone, and a pop filter would be the best start. proper gain staging after
Youre deessing too much. Probably with the goal of eliminating the sibilance. Not gonna do that. Just wanna tame it so its not so harsh. Keep slowly moving that threshold down until younl see that the unit is reqcting and then close your eyes and start hearing the signal bypassed and working. Adjust what you feel. Just wanna tame the sibilance. Not get rid of it
Also somewhere around 6.3k-6.5k is where sibilance lives. Maybe change the freq of the deesser to that range and itll hit the sibilance before it really attacks the high end
Nah . . if you attenuate different frequencies, then compress, the compressor will bring those frequencies back up, that's the whole point of a compressor.
I find compression first gives a fuller signal of audio and allows me to hear the problem areas easier
interesting, i’ll have to try thus
Nice observation. Haven’t thought about it this way
exactly right.
A Japanese engineer lead me to Devvon. Been tuning in ever since
Tell him/her i said thank you!

What if your bedroom is acoustically treated 😏
@@JayDeeOfficialxthenyou have what was referred to as a "solid booth"
Do both: subtractive before, additive after, then compress again.
My usual chain:
EQ > Compress > EQ > Compress > Limit
Bing bong
Dont forget that a compressor can also act as an eq/timed eq. The faster the attack the more it attenuates shorter wavelengths ie high frequencies
Peak compression after Eq is golden
Also stepp is before you at do anything make sure you listen to the whole vocal dry for any hidden problems

Some compression can present different harmonics to the sound after the EQ has been added first as well so it just depends for me.
In audio engineering school, it’s subtractive EQ then compression.

Too much sugar in tank!! Stop the bs in the music industry!
Basically, why paint the wall before it’s sanded and primed.
Im a compression first kind of guy idk why its just preference
IF THE AUDIO ISNT PROBLEMATIC THEN TYPICALLY ILL COMPRESS FIRST JUST TO TAME THE TRANSIENTS THEN SHAPE AND SCULPT WITH EQ…IF I EQ INITIALLY THEN WHY COMPRESS BEING THAT IT COULD POTENTIALLY REINTRODUCE SOME UNWANTED FREQUENCIES BAXK INTO THE SPECTRUM
I'll sometimes put a de-esser after each compressor on a vocal.
Never thought of it quite like that. Respect
I’ve had better results doing the opposite. I’d compress and boost eq
Compression squishes everything together. Doesn’t really care what you like or don’t about the signal. I like to eq and de-s after for a precise look at that I’m doing. Obviously you can do what you like though 👍
So eq AND deeser b4 the compression !
DeEsser -> Eq -> Compressor.
That's my personal recommendation.
And Devvon's explanation, sums up why I believe in this processing chain as well.
Warren Huart also said this, he add a DeEsser before the EQ
(Autotune>) Eq> compress > desser > Eq > limiter
👀 ✍️🏽
Is the first eq the subtractive one or the booster🗣
And what's the limiter for
Great tip. Thanks
Im new in mixing and learning a lot from these guys... 🥇
I agree, ever since I began EQ first the vocals are more clear and easy to handle
Why would I not just increase the volume of the channel once I have de-essed and EQ'd the track? What does compression give you that volume doesn't, once you have processed the signal?

Can i get on this show??
I know this method real well a good good
Professor in school will teach this of a absolute experience engineer will teach this
But you have to realize that like in some genre's EQ 1st doesnt work
100% agree not including the outboard gear to track vocals
Always and forever unless you do that while you record which you probably shouldn't.
Boom 🎯🎯🎯keep these shorts coming brada
I always do that everytime fr
Love this guy ‼️
Sir you need to get rid of the plosives in this video before you hit record
@AD4 it can help some. but you dont ever want that to be an issue to start with. enough space between the voice and microphone, and a pop filter would be the best start. proper gain staging after
Fix along the way👍🏽
What about compressing on the way in ?
NICE MR SCIENTIST DEVON GOOD ENGINEERING! THE FORCE IS STRONG WITH THIS ONE!
Well this settles it 🥶
Free game
I used to do this and got clowned for it. Now that I’m seeing others in the industry doing it. Ima just go back to what feels natural to me
Someone may call u a banana. But only you can start peeling. Dont let nobody clown you outta ye own style
Good shhh
Agree
I’ll try this next mix thank you
Exactly what I do
What u saying though why deessers always make my lead vocal sound shitty with less hi end always find myself tryna make the vocals brighter afterwards

Legit way

No it won’t unless ur literally carrying ur threshold knob all the way down to like -60 db😂
That really depends on how harsh you’re compressing. I doubt most people are compressing that much
Amen ❤
