I have the Amtrak Surfliner O Scale train going around the ceiling of my office. Also, our favorite vacation was San Francisco before covid. I picked up TTR SF on a Christmas 50% off sale and still unopened. I'm getting ready to play it now after watching this video.
Enjoyed your review! Just ordered and played first game of Berlin tonight. Love the hard choices to be made between streetcar or subway. Paris is to be released too, so time to update your review. Plan to use Berlin for intro. For non-gamers (although some other city versions may be simpler to introduce), filler game and travel.
These smaller TTRs are great! Had a friend who is not particularly into the hobby over for games. We played TTR:NY and he loved it. So we asked if he wanted to "go varsity" and pulled out TTR:Europe.
Yeah, for me it was Ticket to Ride only a couple of years ago. My partner got me the game for Christmas... I've slowly been getting into modern board games since.
For me it wasn’t a game par se that got me into the hobby but a puzzle (Rush Hour) though, it was really the game store where my Grandparents bought the puzzle for me while I would be over at their house contently playing with it on my own. They had Settlers of Catan, Tikal, Acquire and all these other great games that I didn’t even knew about before due to my only Game selections which I sadly knew of were mainly from Toys ‘R’ Us (Really should be called “Toys ‘R’ Expensive”, but I’m digressing here 😅) But when I found a hobby store close by me who sold hobby board games, it was like a whole new world opened right in front of me. I didn’t have money at the time and I rarely bought some but at least I had a bike that took me to and from the store and I would spend hours studying and educating myself with all the games variety that they had learning everything that I could about the hobby that I wanted to be apart of. Now even though I do live in a psychiatric nursing home, with the help of my BF and family to take me to different stores to hunt different unique picks I have been able to amass a very decent collection of my own (with both new and vintage games) to help me cope when going through schizoaffective episodes while also having been able to expose my hobby and love for boardgaming with others while I’m over in the Home. So if it wasn’t for family and friends and most of all this hobby that I’m apart of, I don’t know where I would be mentalwise today and that’s definite a blessing ☺
Played Catan in college but didnt realize there was much of a hobby. The game was actually Quantum - this quick playing dice war game blew my mind. Then i asked my brother to keep showing me new games, and off i went
For me I think it was Galaxy Truckers. I've only recently (past year) started to build my own collection of board games but Galaxy Truckers is the one I remember getting me into the headspace of wanting to play more.
My gateway game was Sentinels of the Multiverse. 🥰 My friend knew the way to get a comic book guy into board games was by introducing me to a superhero inspired game.
The game that really got me into the hobby was Settlers of Catan. I tried to get my parents into the hobby with Ticket to ride, but they never got past it. Any other game if taught them they have not been able to grasp, even Wingspan (Althoughfrom my understanding the designer wasn't able to teach her parents either). The only other game my parents will play is Ticket to Ride Europe lol.
the Game I started was Abyss, it was a blind pick and I gotten it by the cover in a book fair. its a amazing game luckily for me. played over 50 times,
I think my first “games go deeper moment” was Shadows over Camelot though that was years ago. Recently the game that truly got me addicted was Blood Rage
Marvel Legendary was the game that got my wife and I into all this. I was looking for something to do after the kids went down besides watching TV, and saw Marvel Legendary in an article on IGN. I was fascinated at the idea of a co-op board game!
The little ticket tor ides are better than the big ones. While the components are better in the bigger ones, the game just goes too long for how lucky it is. If I lose Ticket to Ride I'm like, "well, I drew bad once so I lost and it took an hour and a half." If I play the small ones I say, "I drew bad so I lost, but it only took me 20 minutes so I will try again and probably win this time."
@@TPH250290 It doesn't feel like you do. At that end of the game when people reveal their routes it seems like the player that one always says "I drew all these similar routes one after the other", and just everyone else is screwed. Again, it doesn't matter in a 20 minute game, but in an hour and a half game it's inexcusable.
I think my first game that made me go 'whoa, I had no idea games could do this' was Libertalia. I remember just being so floored that you could have 'phases'. It's not even one of my favorite games (I like it, but not in my top 10), it just really opened my eyes to modern gaming.
Ticket to ride was my initial, but it didn’t blow the doors open, that was the quest for el dorado. About a 12 year gap before I actually went down the rabbit hole.
Axis and Allies like...I want to say maybe 15-17 years ago...maybe even longer. After that it was played into oblivion, and from there it was just a a slippery slope into a huge collection between me and my friends.

My first board game was the original Avalon Hill Civilization (or possibly Advanced Civilization) a long, long time ago
Strangely enough probably the "Exit" escape room in a box games and then "Horrified" 1 and "American Monsters" opened the floodgate big time!
Puerto Rico took from behind the grey Ameritrash wall, into the marvelous world of gaming.
My gateway game was Sentinels of the Multiverse. 🥰 My friend knew the way to get a comic book guy into board games was by introducing me to a superhero inspired game.
After 20 yrs. I still have to look up how to spell Carcassonne. 😂
Fan of Disney parks? I ask because of the excellent book behind you... 😉
Diehard lol!
My gateway game was King of Tokyo
for those that have played, how does this compare to London version? you think this version is better? Game that got me into the hobby was 7 wonders!
My gateway game was Catan.
Catan > looking for two-player version of Catan and finding 7 Wonders Duel > Rabbit Hole!
King of Tokyo and Ticket to Ride were my introduction into the hobby, then it was down the rabbit hole 😂.
Dead of winter for me, it seemed like fun birthday present. Something different.

I wished the smaller ttr maps where double sided. Like some of the expansions
Catan, quickly followed by Carcassonne.
I live near San Franciso, There should have been an actual endpoint of Chinatown. I like the green car card from the movie Bullitt.
Exploding Kittens, get me into new hobby 😆
castle panic

I love the city versions. I wanted to design a Baltimore version with ferries. There's a lot of fun cities they could do.
It would be interesting if they tried Lausanne , Switzerland with, bus, tram, metro, rail

You can easily mitigate "one bad draw", lol.

rise and fall of the third Reich was the one that brought me into gaming
My gateway games was Axes and Allies , Fortress America.
Ticket to ride was my initial, but it didn’t blow the doors open, that was the quest for el dorado. About a 12 year gap before I actually went down the rabbit hole.
Haha I think my family has it :p *turns around*
Oh my first game that got me in the hobby was Clank! From there I got a lot more games.
My gateway game was, The Last Night on Earth.
I'd love to see a Ticket To Ride Chicago, with little "El" trains with CTA lines.
Axis and Allies like...I want to say maybe 15-17 years ago...maybe even longer. After that it was played into oblivion, and from there it was just a a slippery slope into a huge collection between me and my friends.
