  • BEST VIEWED ON A MOBILE PHONE, this 360 video lets you walk through Carthage Jail during a short narration of the last days of Joseph Smith and his brother, Hyrum, who were killed by a mob of men who raided the jail on 27 Jun 1844. Joseph Smith was the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, acknowledged as a prophet of God by Church members. He was opposed by other religious leaders in the area, and the success of his people in building the city of Nauvoo, Illinois, led to fears the Mormons would hold economic and political power in the region.
Following the death of their leader, Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo were eventually forced to leave Illinois. In 1846, they left by the thousands for a unknown destination in the West, eventually settling the Intermountain Region and the state of Utah.
