Ferret Nation Cage Review + Modifications, Tips & Tricks

  • I give this cage 4 out of 5 stars. It has a lot of serious flaws, but I still recommend buying it, because it’s still the best thing out there. Just plan on making some modifications.
    -The Good-
    {1} It has a nice appearance.
    {2} There’s storage space underneath.
    {3} The owner has easy access via large detachable doors.
    {4} Despite being a tall cage, it doesn’t have any fall risks inside.
    {5} The top and bottom cages can be joined or separated.
    {6} The cage walls are quiet because they’re welded.
    -The Bad-
    {-1} Assembly can be difficult if the parts don’t fit together properly.
    {-2} The floor grates are noisy.
    {-3} To get good pans, you have to buy them separately, from another company.
    {-4} The mid-level shelves are unsafe without modification.
    More details:
    {-1} The cage is designed to fit together easily, and in theory, it does... but I had to work around several manufacturing flaws. In one case, a rock-hard paint drip inside of a screw hole kept two pieces from fitting together. I had to file it down and break it off with a screwdriver. (I also had to file a paint drip off of one of the door handles.) I also encountered a bent door frame, which needed to be bent back into shape, and a side wall that would not slide into place without the use of a rubber mallet. (Suggestion: Leave the wheels off while you’re assembling the cage, because you might have to push down on a few of the pieces REALLY hard.)
    {-2} The floor grates are not rigidly anchored; they just rest in place between the sides of the frame. Unfortunately, this causes them to clang when the animal jumps around. To avoid this, you can buy #8 screw protectors (small rubber caps) and put them on the tips of the grating before you assemble the cage. Truthfully, the manufacturer should include these with the cage already... but they don’t.
    {-3} The included pans are woefully inadequate for anyone who uses wood or paper bedding, and the official Ferret Nation scatter guards seem poorly designed. (I’ve never owned any, but I’ve read reviews and seen pictures.) That leaves you in the bizarre situation of spending $200 for this cage and then spending another $150 on pans and scatter guards from a completely different company, Bass Equipment. I do recommend the Bass pans, but you should know that they’re noisy unless you modify them (which is covered in my video). The same goes for Bass’s urine guards.
    {-4} The mid-level shelves are held in place by their own weight using tension on two hooks. It’s a really bad - and dangerous - setup because the shelf can fall if it’s hit from below, either by a human arm or a jumping animal. You can fix this with a few washers and screws (see my video for details), but it’s really upsetting. You shouldn’t have to modify a $200 cage just to make it safe.

    This review is seriously great. I was trying to find a cage for my 2 rats, and I was considering the critter nation (same thing just less bar spacing). I decided against getting one. For now. They are just too heavy and unwieldy. I needed something light and easier to manage. If someday, I have a better space for a cage like this, I'll at least get one to try out, if only because of how great this review is at suggesting fixes. Those massive doors were practically enough to make me overlook how heavy this thing is. I wish more cages did that.
    Thanks again for this great review. I'm not even shopping anymore. I went with a prevue 528 universal small animal cage. Enough for 3 rats, but I'll eventually set a martins cage on top of it to get more space. set up was a breeze and I can break the whole thing down without a sweat, and LIGHT. I actually recommend it for rats, as it seemed to be the best value. Comes with a nice deep pan, has 2 doors, one on front and one on top (making it easy to attach a bottomless cage on top, like a martin), it's light, and the bars are 1/2 inch (best for rats). No safety issues, the platform that comes with it seems to be a sturdy plastic (my boys haven't chewed it up yet). All around, a great cage for 2 rats, and if you want more, a martins cage is a great option for the top.
    Hopefully someday I can try the critter nation and see how it compares. Thank you for the great review, it really helped me make my decision. If I get a midwest, I'll name it after you.

    i uses gorilla tape on the urine guards to keep them from making noise and also allowing the bedding to fall through the gaps making a huge mess in the floor. I placed the gorilla tape along the bottom of the urine guards on the outside of the cage. That help with noise tremendously. Thank you for the idea of cardboard under the pans!! life saver!

    Also, I use a piece of 1/8 inch plexiglass under the shelf opening. It's thin enough that it can extend under the shelf since pee always finds its way there, but super easy to clean.

    • @shelverman
      @shelverman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid to use plexiglass in any place the chins can access, for fear of them chewing and ingesting it.

    @rowanokepaul8513 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have rats with a cage almost exactly like this except the ramps are plastic instead of wire and I actually really like the pans that came with. I never thought about getting a different type of pan for it because when my rats dirty up the bedding (I use paper bedding) they shove it out of the bars and I have a mat underneath the cage so the soiled paper and a lot of the poop and stuff gets pushed out and I can sweep it up and throw it away and when their bedding gets kind of low or after a week I can clean it all and replace the bedding and as long as I don't put too much bedding they only really push out more of the dirty stuff.

  • @tehKap0w

    I have the critternation version of this cage (rats) and i have to concur with just about everything... despite it easily correctable shortcomings, it really is the best enclosure out there for your critters.
    Just expect to modify it to suit your own animal's needs and you'll be happy with this cage.

  • @susanseal5702
    @susanseal5702 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Best video around! Thank you!
    Did you purchase urine guards for the front of cage?
    What about the smaller trays, did you purchase the metal ones or cover the plastic ones?

    • @shelverman
      @shelverman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!
      The set of urine guards I bought included pieces for the front, but I didn't want to attach them if I didn't have to. (I actually ended up using them underneath the cardboard between the top and bottom floors, to stop the downstairs chin from chewing the cardboard.)
      I did purchase the smaller metal shelf trays, but I really didn't like them, so I decided to take my chances with the plastic ones. The chins have given them "test nibbles," but not enough to make me very concerned that they'll ingest the plastic.
      If I ever did use the metal shelf trays, I would probably make a fleece sleeve to go underneath them (to prevent rattling). The other problem with them is that, with their high lip, they would be hard for the chin to access without a ramp (which I didn't want to use) or a shelf attached to the door (which would be awkward).

    Great review addressing the perks and flaws of the best cage on the market. I have rats and I've recently seen people modding the cage by removing the floor on the bottom half of the cage and making a Plexiglas tub to sit on the shelf below to allow for deeper bedding. Do you think removing the floor would be a structural issue with the way the cage is designed?

    • @shelverman
      @shelverman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Removing the bottom floor grate wouldn't cause a structural issue because it just "sits in there" (jingling loosely between the two sides of the frame). When you assemble the cage, it would be easy to leave out the floor grate. However, be warned: If you ever change your mind, you'll have to take the cage apart to put the bottom grate back in.

    • @tehKap0w
      @tehKap0w 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It won't structurally affect the cage but i know my rats would take about half a day to chew through a tub floorboard.
      There's a reason the walls are powder-coated metal!

  • @susied8795
    @susied8795 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks so much for this detailed video! The hack of putting bolts to prevent the shelf bracket from lifting didn't work for me. I had the door open talking to two of my rats who were on the shelf and it fell. For me, it wasn't the bracket lifting up that caused it to fall, it was the weight pushing down on it which lifted the bracket out of the holes. So I'll move the bolts to be under the bracket instead to give it extra support and see if that helps.

    • @shelverman
      @shelverman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Naturally, it's only half as effective with the door open, since only the rear bolt would be in place.
      Also, the bolts must be a hair's breadth above the shelf bracket, or they won't work. They can't allow any upward movement of the shelf whatsoever. But, as long as the shelf is fully inserted, and the bolt is right on top of the shelf bracket, it should not be able to come out and fall; it won't have enough freedom of movement. I can't describe the placement in any more detail than that, but if you look closely at how the shelf would need to move in order to fall, you can place the bolt to prevent that.
      If you do move the bolts under the shelf, I suggest putting them at the far end of the shelf (near the center of the cage) instead of near the side, where I put mine.

    Excellent video!! What do think of putting plexiglass on the back to prevent urine spray on walls? I currently have a fleece blanket attached with Velcro strips. I was thinking of attaching plexiglass with Velcro. Easy cleanup, just wipe instead of washing so much fleece.

    • @shelverman
      @shelverman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suggest being careful with plexiglass. I put a piece of plexiglass against my cage once, but I carefully positioned it so that none of the edges could be chewed. (Because of how it's made, I assume plexiglass would be very dangerous for chinchillas to ingest.)

    Hi Shelverman. Great video. Perhaps you can help. I can't get ready-made cages in my country. So I resorted to buying high parrot cage. Now I would like three stories, so I will need two/three "floors / pans". Ideally with a bit of a lip around it. Now I can cut some wood to size and cut out a corner opening for them to move up and down. But to get that sort of "pan" meeting the size specs of my cage is a bit of a tall order. I would love to hear if you have suggestions. Thank you. Renier

    • @shelverman
      @shelverman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you talking about the metal pan? The best alternative I can think of is a cement mixing tub. I've heard of people buying them at home improvement stores and cutting them down to size. (I'm not really comfortable with it because it's plastic that's not meant for animals... but as long as the chins don't eat it, it should be okay.)

    • @shelverman
      @shelverman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, if you're already doing everything recommended in the video, I can't think of anything else to add.
      I will say that, if your chinchilla runs at breakneck speed (vs a gentle jog), there's nothing that can stop that from being noisy up close. I definitely recommend not placing the cage next to your bed, or any other area where you need reliable quiet. (One of my boys ran like that when he was young, and it would wake me up fairly often.)

      I still have it, and I'm still happy with it. The only noteworthy change since the video is that I ended up attaching those urine guards closer to the cage and bending them slightly outward. Then I filled the gap with extra pine shavings, which muffles the noise and catches other debris.

      I noticed that in your video, I was curious to know how the plastic shelving has done since the you posted this video. I just purchased this cage to replace the cage that was given to me with my Chinchilla and he went to town on the plastic shelving in there although he has not done so since I have had him. Not that I can tell anyway. I think he just had a lack of chewable with his previous owner. But still I am a bit concerned. What is your experience?

    • @shelverman
      @shelverman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My chins have chewed the shelves a little bit, but not too badly. I'm nervous about them ingesting the plastic, but it's a very hard plastic, so I'm hoping for the best. (Thankfully, they seem to prefer chewing the wooden shelves I've added, and the wooden/hay chew toys I provide.)

    • @shelverman
      @shelverman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The metal is folded over at the edge, so the edges aren't sharp. You still have to be careful of blunt force hazards, though:
      (1) My chins like to lean over the side, so I have to be careful when closing the cage door that I don't pin their heads between the pan and the door.
      (2) My chins like to jump out of my hands as they're being returned to the cage, so I have to be careful they don't jump prematurely and "belly flop" on the edge of the pan.

      The Ferret Nation cage is $230 on Amazon, the two Bass Pans in my video cost about $100 total, and the Chin Spin now sells for $120. (It was $100 when I bought it, and from what I hear, used to cost more like $60. They're getting ridiculous.) That's a total of about $450. If you start including miscellaneous items like bowls and hay racks, you're looking at $500 or more.

    "You shouldn’t have to modify a $200 cage just to make it safe."
    This would be true, if this was a cage that wasn't designed for a specific animal in mind- it's right there on the tin. Ferrets. Those hooks are for hanging hammocks and other things, specifically for ferrets. Similarly, the ramp covers are for ferrets- they're not great climbers and the covers are specifically to assist them by giving them more grip.
    Don't get me wrong this review certainly confirmed the low tray problem vis a vis bedding, but do realize you're reviewing a cage designed for ferrets, with the mindset of an animal that is prone to jumping frequently and powerfully. And is a completely different taxonomic species to boot- ferrets aren't rodents, after all. Screw covers are a great idea all the same, didn't know the flooring was loose (although I personally don't mind noise- I've had to live with birds)

      The point is valid. The specs are not however.
      With smaller round wheels they really do pose a threat to a chin. If they can not reach full extension then it will cause them curl up putting a heavy arch on the spinal column which will cause long term health problems. Some of those type of wheels rotate around on a single bearing that comes out in the center of the wheel meaning not only will the spine be at an arch, but as they go up and down, it smashes into that bar causing more issues. And of course the massive health risks if its a plastic wheel.
      However a chin spin is around a 15" diameter. This should allow most chins to reach full extension with out issue. There is no bar coming out in the center. And it is not made of plastic. The chin spin of more of the top two popular designs for chins.
