I think I'll have to get one of these having watched this. It looks like the best 'mini' console so far with a quality selection of games. Great video as always Gemma😎
Thank you for making this video and sharing your thoughts on the games on the A500 Mini. I would recommend that you consider revisiting a lot of the games you skipped over as they offer the most depth. Specifically Cadaver, Dragon's Breath, and Sentinel. It was clear from the footage that you did not know how to play these games and as such your opinion of them was marred somewhat. The Amiga comes from an era where manuals came with the game that required you to read them to get the most out of the title. I know you are aware of this of course, this is more for people reading this comment who are not. I appreciate time was not on your side for getting this video out, but I still think you need to consider delving deeper into those titles that you struggled with to give them the time they deserve. This is especially true of Dragon's Breath, which had multiple facets of strategy, schmup, and empire building all rolled into one very deep game.
The Sentinel was a game I was given for the BBC Micro I had. I was far too young for it and couldn't figure it out then (RTFM). Only last week did I discover it was available on the Amiga so I loaded it up on my genuine A500, downloaded a copy of the manual and found out its a complex, difficult, truly awesome puzzle game. I highly recommend you invest more time in it Gebs. You might find you love it.
Thanks for the review! I had an Amiga 500 back in the day with the expansion RAM, and a whole 1200 baud modem, but sadly got rid of it several years ago when I was moving since I didn't want to carry it around anymore (too bulky especially with all the floppies), and at the time, I just got a PlayStation 2 which was more entertaining to me. I had loads of fun on the Amiga 500 though. I spent many late hours playing Lemmings, Oh No! More Lemmings, Lemmings the Tribes, A Christmas Lemmings (forgot the name), Shadow of the Beast II, Speedball, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Jack Nicklaus golf, APB, Vindicators, Battle Chess, and others. There's a number of games I've never tried on this mini, so I may have to get it and load it up with my favorites for some good ol' gaming nostalgia!

I grew up with the Amiga, also has a Snes and Mega Drive but the Amiga always held a special place in my heart as it felt like a full-blown computer that you could do so much more than you do on consoles and it was the first computer that got me into computing which is ironic because at first I bought it for gaming but half my time on the Amiga was doing other stuff then gaming. Truly one of the greats of the times.
I never got to experience the Amiga first time round and always found emulation to be a bit fiddly. Since this was announced I was always um-ing and ah-ing about getting this due to the price. Had steered away from reviews as I had read that some people didn't give an honest opinion. Really glad that you did this video as I know how passionate you are about retro games and that you would give an honest review. Will definitely be getting this on release. Great video again. Thanks Gemma.
Great review Gemma. I already have an Amiga 500/600 and 1200 but had to order this too. Received mine yesterday, nothing beats instant loading, saving games easily and that menu.
Great game captures! (It made easier to get idea about games in this mini) USB stick, which resembles floppy disk is very nice piece of artwork. My old friend gave me Amiga 500, which had damaged flopppy drive. Later I found that it was possible to fix damaged floppy drive with certain PC floppy drive...
Modern technogoly sure has come so far from when the Amiga was fisrt released. This new Amiga sure looks more stylish😋🥰If i were there I would come play👍🙏
They should have taken the approach of the Sinclair ZX81 for the keyboard and made it slightly wider because then it would be more functional. As someone who got his first Amiga 500 and a few months later an Amiga 1200 in 1994 which replaced my Atari Mega ST, and Atari 800 XL from 1985, I can say that the Amiga was used for almost everything it could do, more than just games. Producing music was my main goal, but also graphic design, two things that it excelled at before PC's started to stride ahead at. By the time I got my first PC in August of 2001, my Amiga 1200 went up in the loft and didn't see the light again for almost 20 years. I have around 200 floppy disks, from Amiga magazines and games I bought back then. Super Stardust AGA, Ruff & Tumble, Settlers and Disposable Hero are a few of my faves. Shadow Fighter (a Street Fighter like game), was fun also. I had Playstation 1, but I seemed to find time for my Amiga during that time. My first home computer was a ZX81 which I of course got in 1981....
This takes me back 🥲😍 I really want and need this in my life. Great review Gemma. I don't knows how many of hours of my life i spent playing California Games and Kick Off 🙂
@@TheGebs24 oooh absolutely as an early 80's kid i grew up with these badboys. My older cousin had an Atari 2600 which i inherited, My best friend had a Commador 64. I was an only child so i was spoilt 😁 I had lucky enough to have the Amiga, Nes and Master System before obviously progressing onto Snes etc etc. If i could go back i would tell myself to hold onto all my consoles as i started doing from my Snes. Box and all. Never Grow up. Never stop gaming My son and daughter will have to fight over a lot of inheritance 😂
Great video giving us a good look at what's on offer with the A500 mini! Mine will be arriving on Friday and although I already own several Amiga machines, including a souped up CD32, I am really looking forward to playing with this when it arrives! My old A500 is packed away in the attic and has been for several years now, and i'm one of those people you mentioned that just doesn't have the desk room to set it up, what with my C64G, A600, PS2, CD32, Wii and Switch already taking up my entire desk 😀 So yes. this will be great for me as it'll take up very little room, and there's no hulking great brick-like modulator sticking out the back either 😀
@@TheGebs24 Yep the A600 was poo pooed by Amigans back in the day, and of course there were compatibility issues with older A500 games not running on it as the 600 is basically an A500+ in smaller form, but I personally love it due to the amount of space you get to save ha ha...it's all good!! :)
I got my Amiga minni in the post yesterday it's awesome , I love it my best friend is downloading all the games for me , I don't know which game I'm looking forward to the most...... Oh the nostalgic memories are priceless.
@@TheGebs24 Out of the 25 on there probably speed ball for the music and intro . But once my mate brings me the usb I genuinely won't know where to start. North and South is a definite contender.
So many great memories, I owned the Amiga 1200, but with the exception of a few games on this list, I owned most of them, Alien Breed and ATR were my favourite games, and I put so many hours in to Simon the Sorceror. Thanks for a great video and sharing these memories.
Battle Chess is an awesome game. One question about the Amiga 500 Mini - can you use a USB splitter to alow more devices to be added such as a USB keyboard for example?
Great vid but note that the manual and USB stick do not come with the stock A500 Mini, they're promo items for reviewers! The manual can be downloaded from the Retro Games website, and of course any USB stick (FAT32) will work :)
Great video love your reviews have my A500 mini on order soon looking forward to setting it up. hope we get more videos of you playing the a500 and adding whdload games from you 🙏👍
Excellent review Gemma! 👍. With quite a good selection of titles from back in the day! It looks a definite improvement on the mini c64, first time out of the gate. Which I wasn’t impressed by. But this looks great. The Evercade though, has its fingers in all the pies. With older retro titles such as these! 🙂
@@TheGebs24 I think I am gonna go full nostalgia and buy an actual old school A5/600. You haven't lived until you've experienced loading up the 13 floppy disks for Monkey Island 2!
Hey great video and review of Amiga mini. I am feeling the nostalgia and gonna get it for myself. And yeah I can gladly take you up on your offer of playing Amiga games with you. :))
Cool video, yes I love a game of chess from time to time, as well as other genres. The comical 'takes' in Battle Chess really make it more satisfying because it's not just pushing pieces around a board, chess really is a battle!
Alien Breed!!!! One of my first games I had… I just need to find some money!!.,,Pardroid 90 that is one of my old time favourites, just need to add Darkmere to the mix loved that game too.
Big Chess fan here, used to play a weekend tournament once a month or so; I always found battle Chess hard to concentrate on though - thing with Chess pieces is, the more ornate they are, the harder they are to concentrate on, a basic Staunton set is best. I find myself loosing track of which piece is which in Battle Chess - plus it is pretty long winded to make moves; the knight or whatever has to slowly trot across the board 🙂
If I wasn't excited enough, now i'm really excited. Shame you only get extras in the review kit, I really want a floppy disc usb stick. thanks for answering the one question that was indeed unanswered, the cable length. I was nervous about that.
Thanks Legg. They didn’t tell me that the manual and USB drive was for reviewers only. I’m sorry. There’s a PDF manual in the support section of their website. Enjoy
one of my favourite amiga games for no reason was Head over Heels, that and a game I'm never going to be able to find again, tried explaining on the TOMT subreddit and no one has been able to get it. Speedball 1 and 2 were amazing too, really wish they'd do a modern version but keep it in line with how it was before, maybe just add some modern things we're used to now
Very nice, cool review :) Mini-Amiga is indeed very tempting to get, even I have the real Amiga 500. I wonder if later they'll add also some of the more famous Amiga productivity software, like DeluxePaint, which is really good graphics drawing & animation program, or music makers, like ProTracker, Octamed, etc. In the 90's I spent more time drawing pics with DPaint than gaming with my A500, trying to make some music was fun too and trying out all those softwares found from CU Amiga, One Amiga, etc. magazine disks, those were the days :) All this fun I repeated with first Playstation, I have the Music program for it, there was Official Playstation Magazine with cover cd-rom's, etc., well no graphics programs for Playstation though :D
The sad thing about Speedball 2 was that The Bitmap Brothers didn't make a penny from it due to publisher Imageworks/Mirrorsoft collapsing thanks to owner and media mogul Robert Maxwell dipping into pension funds bringing on the collapse of the Mirror group.
Hi, You should mention that only You and other youtube-reviwers are lucky to receive a USB stick and the in dept user manual. and I hope ther will be an update very soon, because when I run for instance "slamtilt" whd from a usb stick and reach a hi-score the game will get corrupted and not restart again. dont know if this happens every time I hit a hi-score in a WHD game.
Glad I preordered one on they day it was announced on Amazon uk. I am in the states and had to originally play amiga games on the pc had boxed copies of gods, chaos engine and alien breed so it was time to get a suitable amiga without getting the original. Looking forward to using the controller and cool mouse. Will plug in my usb keyboard and storage to check out some of my favorite amiga RPGs fyi in most flight sims you probably need a keyboard as the speed is set on them and if you reach the right speed yo7 can takeoff. Otherwise you’ll run off the runway. I am looking forward to that and some helicopter games too.
I'm going to wait until after the North American release at the end of next month. I believe this thing will go the same way as the C64 mini and the price will drop substantially after release. I like the Amiga as much as the next guy/gal but no way is this thing worth $140 plus tax and shipping.
It actually looks like a solid piece of kit and has been designed to give an authentic experience in a contemporary video output. The problem I have is that you only get a handful of games (25) included. Yes, you can side-load but that means extra time and often shady rom sites. There are now so many retro games consoles out there that are far far superior which contain the full Amiga library at point of purchase plus tens of thousands more games and multitude of systems more. Unlike some systems, you can not fall back on 'official' or previously mentioned 'authentic' as Commodore no longer exist. Great for a real Amiga uber fan but for everyone else, just get a Retrostation, Odroid or any other multitude of emulation consoles that are available from very cheap prices.
@@TheGebs24 Smyths Toys have been giving the floppy USB drives with theirs. Also the full manual in print was only included for reviewers but can be downloaded as a PDF from Retro Games site. Great run through of all the games BTW, have subscribed and look forward to watching more videos.
Can I add all my original games? Or just use all the emulator files? I spent hours writing up the emulator with hard drive to my pc/laptop works great but this is super... just sold my 1200 with monitor and harddrive was a tough decision
I love that you mentioned Shadow of The best, superhard with nice graphics, you forgot to mention The wonderfull musik and The second game, that also was good, very Hard, but not as pretty... souls-games/metroidvainia before it was a thing can it be wrong? I also loved TMNT on The amiga. Same flawes as The Nintendo, maybe worse framerates, but I loved it. It was christmas-morning and I knew I would get The game... and The first thing I asked was to OpenOffice only onekligen present... and that was The game. You need to play Turrican 2 aswell... best platformer ever...
I wonder why they are doing 720P for both this and the C64 instead of 1080.. Seems like a bit of a missed opportunity to me, believe me it makes a difference.
Nice review... I am enjoying mine.. shame that the user manual and floppy usb are not for all people.. manual only for reviewers and usb only on certain places to buy

See now the SNES is my fave console of all time but the Amiga is consuming me atm
You’re in for a treat Gaz. I can’t wait to get home today and record more footage lol
Great review Gemma. I already have an Amiga 500/600 and 1200 but had to order this too. Received mine yesterday, nothing beats instant loading, saving games easily and that menu.
Wow you have the famous trio then. Nice
I since added 68 additional games to it. Episode is out now
Great review video! Thanks for the info about the free Citadel game too!
You’re welcome. Thank you for watching
Modern technogoly sure has come so far from when the Amiga was fisrt released. This new Amiga sure looks more stylish😋🥰If i were there I would come play👍🙏
It’s a great piece of kit
I don't knows how many of hours of my life i spent playing California Games and Kick Off 🙂
Nostalgia vibes yeah? 😎😎😎
Never stop gaming
My son and daughter will have to fight over a lot of inheritance 😂
The A500 is a beast! I much prefer the look of the A600 myself
Yay!! Congratulations. What will you play first?
@@TheGebs24
Out of the 25 on there probably speed ball for the music and intro .
But once my mate brings me the usb I genuinely won't know where to start.
North and South is a definite contender.
Whats the best place for ROMs ?
Pleasantly surprised to turn sound up on this 🙂
So many great memories, I owned the Amiga 1200, but with the exception of a few games on this list, I owned most of them, Alien Breed and ATR were my favourite games, and I put so many hours in to Simon the Sorceror. Thanks for a great video and sharing these memories.
Simon the Sorcerer really shows the colour range on the Amiga beautifully
That room is incredible :)
Thank you
Battle Chess is an awesome game.
I heard the USB sticks didn’t come with general retail. The instruction manual is news to me so thank you
That is incredibly irritating and misleading.
@@paulharker7184 agreed
Great video love your reviews have my A500 mini on order soon looking forward to setting it up. hope we get more videos of you playing the a500 and adding whdload games from you 🙏👍
Well Stu, I have another episode coming tomorrow about the 68 games I just added. Stay tuned my friend
So tempted to get one of these loved my Amiga 1200 back in the day. You need to add Swos, Turrican 2 and Xenon 2 mega blast asap.
I’ve already added 68 games: th-cam.com/video/aBT_fji816w/w-d-xo.html

Excellent review Gemma! 👍. With quite a good selection of titles from back in the day! It looks a definite improvement on the mini c64, first time out of the gate. Which I wasn’t impressed by. But this looks great. The Evercade though, has its fingers in all the pies. With older retro titles such as these! 🙂
Thank you Gaz. There’s certainly a lot of great hardware coming through
Absolutely loved my A500. Still kick myself decades after swapping it for an Atari Jaguar with ONE game.
Are you going to get a Mini?
@@TheGebs24 I think I am gonna go full nostalgia and buy an actual old school A5/600. You haven't lived until you've experienced loading up the 13 floppy disks for Monkey Island 2!
already got my usb stick ready hope this is a big success and they actually make one with a working keyboard the same as they did with c64
Battle Chess is amazing
Yes the artwork and animation are awesome.
I was wondering about the cable lengths, thanks for mentioning them! :)
Anytime
If I wasn't excited enough, now i'm really excited. Shame you only get extras in the review kit, I really want a floppy disc usb stick. thanks for answering the one question that was indeed unanswered, the cable length. I was nervous about that.
The version of Zool on the A500 mini is actually the AGA version from the A1200.
Pre-ordered this, can't wait to play it on Friday 🤞🤞😁
Let us know how you like it
Bought it yesterday, but unfortunately at least Argos version doesn't include full manula or the usb drive. Nice review.
Thanks Legg. They didn’t tell me that the manual and USB drive was for reviewers only. I’m sorry. There’s a PDF manual in the support section of their website. Enjoy
@@TheGebs24 oh not a problem, just thought I will mention this for others ;)
Nice review Gemma. Looks a great piece of kit. Shame it didn't include the likes of Chuck Rock & James Pond but guess you can add those yourself
You sure can. Stay tuned for the follow up episode
Damn girl your busting out of that top!!
🤣🤣🤣
It looks really cool and I collect minis. I have Amiga Forever as well as C64 Forever on my laptop so I passed on the Commodore minis.
Mine never came with that spinal book or the usb disk stick. I wonder if there were different boxed A500 minis
one of my favourite amiga games for no reason was Head over Heels, that and a game I'm never going to be able to find again, tried explaining on the TOMT subreddit and no one has been able to get it. Speedball 1 and 2 were amazing too, really wish they'd do a modern version but keep it in line with how it was before, maybe just add some modern things we're used to now
I love the Speedball games. They feel so much more difficult nowadays
@@TheGebs24 I'll need to play them soon I haven't played in such a long time
I am pretty sure I had battle chess on my C64. I was probably 5 when I had it, I remember the rooks moving around were cool, doubt I ever won a game 🙈
I have an A600 and CD32. I love them all lol
Wow I never knew that. That’s sad af! Thanks for the information Rich
I wonder where you get a Retro USB stick?
Yeah I’ve seen the USB keyboards working great on the A500 Mini. I think I’ll do an upcoming episode about it
Nice one Gemma x
Cant wait to get all the dizzy games on this!
Yesss mate
Im glad it can have extra games loaded because i really want to play lemmings again
Let's go!
Still waiting for mine! Hopefully soon!
Where can you get the floppy disk USB Drive, I haven’t got one with mine
Great video! But I didn't get the thick User Instruction Manual (only the short Quick Manual) and no floppy USB stick looking like a classic disk.
Sadly I found out that the manual and USB were for reviewers only. They didn’t tell me that before I did the episode. I’m really sorry
I'm going to wait until after the North American release at the end of next month. I believe this thing will go the same way as the C64 mini and the price will drop substantially after release. I like the Amiga as much as the next guy/gal but no way is this thing worth $140 plus tax and shipping.
I´ve bought A500 mini to, but in germany version , i didn´t got User Manual and USB Floppy stick. 😤🥺 Greetings !
I might buy one for my brother. I have original hardware my self.
Another banger
Oh, i really hope i get mine this Friday!

@@TheGebs24 My Amiga will come today. Yay! Its gonna be interesting to see if i can use a Tac-2 joystick with a converter on it.
Love it when u talk amiga
Nice vid. Tell me where that USB drive shaped like a floppy disc cam from please? 🤔🙂
It came included with my unit
@@TheGebs24 damn I need it 🤔
@@TheGebs24 turns out it came included with mine too 🤣
It actually looks like a solid piece of kit and has been designed to give an authentic experience in a contemporary video output.
Stunt car you have boost
Didn’t get a floppy disk USB with mine :( and I can’t find one like it anywhere on internet and I really want it, looks sooo cool
I just found out a few days ago that reviewers only, received them :(
@@TheGebs24 Smyths Toys have been giving the floppy USB drives with theirs.
Good question. I’m not sure on that one. Maybe you can let us know if you try it out
One of your best
Best videos?
Well that looks awesome! :D
great vid n brilliant machine the amiga where did u get the amazing usb drive that looks like a floppy disk
The public release won't have a usb memory, that's exclusive for the reviewers copies
Mine that I just ordered didn't come with the full manual.
Does it come with that cool flash drive or is that just a freebie for youtubers? It is not mentioned anywhere.
Sadly not :(
I need to pick this up at some point.
The actual package Ive received from doesn't include the printed manual nor the floppy usb stick :(
I found out yesterday about the manuals only being for reviewers. Sad times. I wished they’d have told us that
Great review thanks
I wonder why they are doing 720P for both this and the C64 instead of 1080.. Seems like a bit of a missed opportunity to me, believe me it makes a difference.
hey new here wow look at those classic consoles and games I want them all lol
Can you use a USB joystick on this system with these games?
