He has an amazing voice and Costello writes such great songs. Partner had family member who fought in the Falklands and he wasn't proud of his time there and he's just retired after appx 40 years of army life. The hypocrisy the media throws up when perfectly reasonable songs get banned is comical but tragic. Good to hear a reaction of this track as i doubt many will react to it
Thanks. This is my favourite Elvis Costello song. For me, Robert Wyatt was a musician's musician. You might find some examples of his work on TH-cam- a couple of interviews he did in France. And Soft Machine of course. 😺
A very poignant song with the poignancy added by Robert Wyatts vocals! I didnt hear this song at the time of the Falklands War, but I remember seeing the Falklands war report on the news. That line that said they be back by Christmas (I think it was) Immediately brought back the ghosts of WW1, WW2 and any other significent wars that followed. Robert Wyatt was a vocalist & Drummer in the band The Soft Machine until he became paraplegic after falling out of an upstairs window at a party in 1972. He went solo afterwards and played percussion and drums with his hands!
Robert's voice is very distinctive and he's done some great covers. The Monkeys 'I'm a believer' and Chic 'At last I am free' are great imo. From his own songs 'Sea song' is great but 'Free will and testament' is my favourite.

btw, "Free will and testament" -- great song -- was cowritten by Kramer & Robert Wyatt. Cheers.
