I stayed on Koh Samui for about 5 months back in 1987. It was still unspoiled in many places but it was changing fast. They were building the airport at the time. I remember riding a motorbike down the runway at full speed when there was nobody around!

I just came back from Ko Samui last week, and after living in Thailand for the past ten years, this was the first I didn’t enjoy visiting the island. The “quiet streets” were packed with traffic, and the main roads were occupied by speeding van drivers trying to overtake on the wrong side of the road, making it dangerous and a nightmare to get around the island. I lost count of how many accidents I saw 😢
I feel same. Terribile Ko Samui now compare with 13 years i visited. The streets have bad smell like Langkawi 😢. Everything become so expensive and not convenient to me. After stay in Bali and Nusa Penida, I dont see these islands in Thailand are clean and beautiful anymore. So sad. Im in Ko Samui now but just wanna go after 1 day. 😢
I randomly picked Bangrak area on agoda last June for my first visit, wasn’t very busy but a great vibe, stayed at The Shore. Went over to fishermen’s village one night and it was overpriced vapid instagramer selfie land 😂 On the other hand going up to the standing Buddha on top of the mountain at sunset was a highlight, also one of those big waterfalls by the Ferry side of the island has a 2-3 mile hike to it so not a single person was there 😊
Oh yeah it’s great to see Samui back in high season action and full of life! Thanks Chris for showing everyone around the place I’m grateful to call home.
It's been changing since about 1980.When I first went there, a bungalow on the beach was the same price as a beer. You had to go to the post office to make a telephone call off the island. There was 1 bank and NO ATMs, every foreigner on the island had to go to that same bank to get money, the bank is actually still there and it looks the same. It's still fun, just different.
What a great video. I lived there 2006 to 2014. You've brought back so many good memories and it looks like the Samui of old . Happy to see people doing well again. Thanks 🙂 🙏
ARKbar is starting to “bang”. You passed by one of my favorite beach bars just outside Nathon called For Rest Bar. I drove some of the same stretches as you at about the same time as you. Totally agree about the traffic near fisherman’s Village and near Central perhaps someday Samui will implement a traffic management plan. We went to Boklee Bite in Bangrak and had a nice sandwich. Great update Chris.
Went to Samui 1st time in 1988. Was so good and uncrowded I stayed 2 months. Was in a small wooden bungalow right at Lamai beach. Most of the accommodation even at Chaewang was like that. Mainly dirt roads except for the main ring road. Lots of deserted beaches and undeveloped areas to explore. And ridiculously cheap, Have been back since but it was so much more developed & crowded since that first trip. Them were the days. 🌴🙏😊👍
We’re just back from Chaweng - so busy! Samui Central was our top choice for places to eat. Probably next time we visit we’ll look at Lamai as a base. It was our first visit so you video was really helpful!

However, I think your video's will help us short list the best of the island and we get a good taste. Enough to see us planning another trip. Hey Chris I’m looking forward to seeing Piya and the nice folks at Sea Breeze bungalow in Lamai. Wish you were on the island when we arrive next weekend. Enjoy Chiang Mai 👍👍
Love this! My parents stay at Hanalei Gardens every year for several months at a time. They have to go back to NZ for a few then fly back. I stayed at Boom Bay Bungalows everytime i visit (they've sold the property now).
Anyway it changed a lot since our first staying in 1995 when you could exploring the island with a motorbike , even waterfalls were free to visit ! The major change will come if they ever gone, build the bridge to connect to mainland !
Been on Samui 3 times over the last year and a bit, the last time being August, and things were slowly picking up over that time but this video shows it really has gone up a level for sure. Nice video! Love ring road drive.
Enjoyed your trip around the Samui ring road it was brilliant!, I'm out of the Island and missing it already....... opening up a coffee bar at the Grand Mother Grandfather Rock when I get back so.... exciting !
Hi Chris. Love your channel. We're visiting Koh Samui for the first time in a week or so and have been lapping up your wonderful information about the island. We can't wait to get there. Can you advise about eating seafood though. We love seafood but the Australian DFAT site had warned against eating any seafood in Thailand. What is your take on this please? Debbie
Can't wait to get back to Samui next week. Miss the ladies saying "Heyyyyyy" as you drive by lol. I was there for 4 months starting in July of this year and it was a blast. Stayed primarily in Bangrak. I'd recommend La Côte de Bœuf on the ghost road if you enjoy French cuisine but I would also recommend going to restaurants like Khao Horn and bars/clubs that only the locals go to. I'm hoping all the tourists don't ruin the local feeling I had on the island. It looks like I left just before the rush in October. By the way...rental prices for hotels, resorts, houses and villas are around 3-4x higher it seems now.
Love your videos. We are coming back after 3 years this month. Hope you can swing by Nigel’s for the Samui Swine Feb. 1-5. Gonna be a good time and disc golf in paradise! Another disc golf event is down in Laem Sor the week before.

Love the vids man! thanks so much - look forward to hopefully popping over to Thailand this year for a few months so these are super helpful!!
You are awesome and thank you for the recommendations…Samui will be on the must do list for my next trip!
Great video. Thanks. Heading to Samui in October for our first trip. Staying in Bo Put. 7 days only. Wish it was more. However, I think your video's will help us short list the best of the island and we get a good taste. Enough to see us planning another trip. Definitely going to sample some of what Bangrak has on offer. 😋 Keep up the good work. 👍
Best video I watched so far about ko Samui ! Thank you Chris ! Great smart work bud
I’ll be back out there in Ko Samui February 8 can’t wait. Thank you so much for this video.
Thank you so much for Samui
Lived for over 4 Months during 2020 in Chaweng it was so empty and quite, good to see that it's coming back to LIFE!
That was lovely i can tell you enjoyed driving around and editing this. Fine work! Wondering if it's possible to just hire a driver and car for the day just to hit all these great spots... .
Thanks for a great video. Will be in Samui next month. So excited!!
Wow what a fantastic video🙏 Thx a lot Chris. Bringing back all Koh Samui memories to me! Love it brother🙏
I Really like your video's !! Thanks a lot. We are coming to lovely KOH SAMUI in August. Looking forward very much. Maybe we'll see you around ;) Cheeerio!
Great tour! Just starting to research Thailand and this video was super helpful, thanks man!
We stayed in BangRak, it’s great. Coffee cup is great for lunch, secret garden was awesome, and Tenbo is good to rent a lounger and enjoy the beach and pool! Another pricey but beautiful place is Chi beach club. I did the same drive only on a moto, no traffic with a moto! Great video
Will be in chaweng in a month ! Looking forward to it ! Thx for your video, makes us already flying 😊
Chris - Chaweng Bch had long-board surfboards for rent. It was a Blast! Nice 3 foot waves a few weeks ago. Just a suggestion for other activities.
Cheers Daniel
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks Chris. Heading over with the fam for a stay in a month so these tips are very useful. Can't wait!

What a great tune! 😎
Thanks for the tour.
Ark bar is back to full swing! Had been missing this place. Thanks for the island tour ☺️
oh cool, thanks for letting me know
@@RetiredWorkingForYou any plans for a Samui Meetup? 😂
ยินดีต้อนรับ ผมก็อยู่สมุย ขอบคุณมากครับที่รีวิว ให้พวกเราชาวไทย ขอให้มาเที่ยวเยอะๆ บ่อยๆนะครับ
Your story was so helpful my partner and I are coming to Koh Samui in May our first trip so looking forward thanks so much for you suggestions
Fantastic, informative video. RWFY is the best!
Enjoyed your trip around the Samui ring road it was brilliant!, I'm out of the Island and missing it already....... opening up a coffee bar at the Grand Mother Grandfather Rock when I get back so.... exciting !
I just found your channel. I love your videos! Fun & informative 👌
Was at ark bar for new year's eve and it was bangin! Lamai was nice too at the start of the month apart from all the rain ☔. Great video, Chris 🙂
Thank you for this great video! I was on Samui some weeks ago and I just want to fly back there while watching your video.
Debbie
Great video update, loved it.
Holi Chris have you made a vid comparing retiring by to Phuket v Koh Samui and the pluses and minuses of that decision?
Keep up the great work
Hi loving your Bloggs 😂
