    Frank Thring delivered one of the greatest closing lines in Australian cinema history in Mad Dog Morgan: "By all means, off with his head... and don't forget the scrotum!".

      @johnnytheprick it’s not hard to Google the information. But you have to want to bother. I admit it drives me a bit crazy when people make statements that are demonstrably incorrect. Call it anal, some do, but I try to be right when I can. 😁

    I vividly recall interviewing Frank Thring and Ruth Cracknell for The Age Green Guide when they were doing 'The Importance of Being Earnest''. Off stage and off camera Frank was an extremely funny, surprisingly natural sort of chap. His knowledge of the history of Australian theatre and the entertainment industry was encyclopedic. He was, literally, brought up in a theatrical household. He chatted away with me and Ruth in a quiet, calm voice; in short, he wasn't performing. It was a side of him I'd not seen when our paths had crossed at various 'work' functions.
    As was often the case, back then, Frank was more famous and appreciated in the UK, Europe and the US than he was at home.
    I admired Frank Thring for his immense range of talents; possibly the best was him 'playing' Frank Thring.
    Sadly, he came to a rough end; suffering acutely from a terrible illness. It was distressing to see him take his final bow that way. Also tremendous to see Bert, whom I
    knew as well; working without notes and doing one of his brilliant off the cuff interviews. RIP to them both and to the delightful Ruth Cracknell; another giant of Australian stage, screen and television. I miss so many of these talented people who I grew up with and think myself lucky to have met in the course of my work. Thank you so much for this video. Cheers, BH

      There is the old skippy story . The kangaroos were kept in a hessian bag between takes. Frank Fring was on the show and said "If that's the star of the show's change room, where do they expect us to get changed?"

    • @BillHalliwell
      @BillHalliwell 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pepelemoko01 G'day Pepe, Yes, I checked. He did say that. Frank never needed to make things up about his life, it was so full of funny, weird and odd situations. There was so much about Frank I couldn't mention here or in the newspaper, he truly was outrageous in an extremely funny way. You'll notice in the video he's wearing his favourite 'neck chain'. When he went on TV or spoke to me during the interview he used to turn it around the wrong way. I asked him about it. He said it was a gift from a very rich, famous person and it was pure gold. When hung the right way around it clearly was a very naughty word. It was his most prized possession. So he refused to take it off even while on TV. Cheers, BH

      @@BillHalliwell Remember the cigarette ad , all these people are singing and dancing and heading for rocks. Oh well, no great loss. He says .Was it Martins?

    • @BillHalliwell
      @BillHalliwell 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pepelemoko01 G'day Pepe, Youknow, I really can't remember but that kind of sounds right. The ads and that brand of cigarette didn't last long. Frank's cigarette ads certainly did stand out. A far cry from Tony Barber dancing around and singing, "Join the club, join the club, join the Escort Club! Thirty-four cents, and you're a member; come on and join the Escort Club!"
      Wow, that didn't work on so many levels. I think that one even embarrassed sex-workers! Spooky how $0.34 has turned into $28.90 etc. all these years later... and still people smoke!
      Frank didn't do many TV ads. I think ad agency folk had a problem finding a product he could sell positively.
      Frank came from a wealthy family, however, I think in his final years he was struggling for an income. Poor chap.
      Frank should have done more theatre, he was a perfectly brilliant stage actor. On film I think his most menacing role was as the judge that sentenced Ned Kelly. I forget which version of the story it was, maybe the odd one where that English rock star played Ned Kelly. I remember the film was a dud at the time but Frank's performance was outstanding. Cheers, BH

    So funny. Bert worked in a radio studio owned by Frank Things's father. Fast forward to Ch9...Owning a transmitter on a nearby hill, gave you a captive audience. Frank copped a bit of his own. Such is today with social media. Say something and people will hold you to account, to a mass audience.

      Probably his father's house. F. W Thring Sr. was an early executive of JC Williamson films which became Hoyts Theatres and a major player in the early Australian film industry, via Efftee Studios. I think their main studio was set up at what was the St. Kilda Theatre on Fitzroy Street. Thring Sr was also an early licencee of radio station 3XY.
