I came upon this video by accident, but it interested me because I was the Hercules Type AAR Instructor in the mid-90s, and I’d been refuelling from all of the RAF’s large tankers since 1982 - including through the Falklands war. Those aircraft include the Victor, Vulcan, Hercules, VC10 and Tristar. The Victor should not have all three hoses deployed. For large receivers, only the centre hose should be out. The approach technique is up the line of the hose, not level with the drogue. The references are painted on the Victor’s underside. In contact, the hose should have the 40ft marker (the ‘ideal’ position indicator) just entering the HDU. Lastly, the Victor and Vulcan are very similar in size; the Vulcan is not ‘huge’ in comparison.
Well, that set a lot of it straight! Thanks! I’ll on the comment so others see it. Much appreciated 👍🏻 Perhaps the developers will also see it and make some adjustments 👍🏻
@@cgaviator I may have some instructional photographs that demonstrate the correct reference position using the Victor’s markings. If I don’t, they can probably be found online.
So two small receivers from pods hoses, or large one from center hose. I got ya. Hose markers on the way, it's just matter of technical implementation of the geometry with dynamic length in the sim engine.
@@TouchingCloud are you the developer? I’m happy to talk about it in more detail if you like. It’s perfectly ok for a fast-jet receiver to use the centre hose too, but not normally at the same time as the wing hoses are being used - there must always be an escape route. But for a large receiver, the proximity of the wingtips to the tanker’s tail, and the effects of the tanker’s asymmetric airflow make receiving from the wing hoses very dangerous and thus not allowed.
My late uncle was an Air Electronics Officer on the Vulcan during the Black Buck missions, then later on the RAF's Vulcan Display Flight and the Vulcan to the Sky Trust. He did the same role on the Victor tankers for over a decade, including the First Gulf War, before he retired in the '90s.

They also hadn’t done air to air refuelling on the Vulcan for years, they had to relearn the skill and the Vulcans had to have probes and systems refitted.
@@cgaviator Sure, the Vulcan was built with air-to-air refueling in mind...but one of the older pilots at the time of the raid was asked by one of the younger ones and he said "We tried it...once. And it was bloody awful." So they took it out of the doctrine, and never trained any of the new pilots on it. Then they were being asked to learn it in a couple of weeks, and to do it dozens of times, at night, with no radio comms. The refueling nozzle for one of the Vulcans was actually being used as an ashtray in the crew room, because they'd taken it off the aircraft.
