...and this should make sense. Blacks have melanin that acts as a natural sunscreen so yes we do need more sunshine. It's not far-fetched.

@@Deogen .... Blacks should be aware of the disadvantages of northern latitudes for them just as whites should be aware of the disadvantages of the southern latitudes for them which increases their incidence of skin cancer. There is a theory that part of melanin's purpose is to protect us from producing too much vitamin D. Of course in northern latitudes and with darker skin we produce far too little -- especially if we don't get out much in the midday sun. The sun's rays are not direct enough to produce any vitamin D from about October thru April. Blacks also tend to suffer higher rates of diseases associated with vitamin d3 deficiencies like diabetes, heart disease, colorectal cancer. Even MS is being connected to vit d deficiencies.

    • @MrZlathan3
      @MrZlathan3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The government recommends about 400 units; she said the blacks should get about 1600 units. In direct sunlight we produce about 10 to 20 thousand units. I think we do that for a reason. I would tend to trust nature on this.

I started having all sorts of neurological issues at the beginning of 2018. This lasted for months (6 months). During the time I had MRI done and saw countless specialists including a neurologist, cardiologist and ENT. Tests ruled out MS and Lyme among other things. After looking up info I asked my neurologist to check my Vit.D level. It came back low, not low to be considered severely deficient BUT this and maybe some new stressors could have been the route of my issues. I seriously thought I was near the end for a minute there. I am a black female who was born and raised in the Caribbean. Sun is always out. But after living in the U.S. for over a decade this became an issue. Now that I go outdoors more I have been feeling way better. Thanks to Texas sunshine and some relaxation techniques. I would not have believed this deficiency was the cause of my problems.

Our higher level of melanin in our skin blocks the sun. That's why we need more Vitamin D esp in the winter when there is less sun exposure. But we need it all year round due to our natural sunblock; our skin. Please add the reason why ee need more Vitamin D not just the fact that it's because we're African American.

    • @tshim

How s that possible? You have vitamin d deficiency because you live winter zones. This is why you should take pills etc.

To unravel the mystery, Colleagues looked closely at
various forms of vitamin D in the blood of 2,085 Baltimore residents,
black and white. They focused on a form of the vitamin called
25-hydroxyvitamin D, which makes up most of the vitamin circulating in
the blood. It's the form that the standard test measures. The 25-hydroxy
form is tightly bound to a protein, and as a result, bone
cells, immune cells and other tissues that need vitamin D can't take it
up. It has to be converted by the kidneys into a form called
1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. For caucasians, blood levels of
    25-hydroxyvitamin D are a pretty good proxy
for how much of the bioavailable vitamin they have. But not for blacks.
That's because blacks have only a quarter to a third as much of the
binding protein, Thadhani says. So the blood test for the 25-hydroxy
form is misleading. His study finds that because of those lower levels
of the protein, blacks still have enough of the bioavailable vitamin,
which explains why their bones look strong even though the usual blood
    tests say they shouldn't.
