  • FreeCAD is an excellent open-source CAD/CAM program available for all major operating systems. As open-source software, it is possible to run the "official released version" or a pre-release version that may have additional leading-edge features. In this video I explain how to install the pre-release versions of FreeCAD and how to configure them for your first use.
    This video is a follow up to my 3 part series on getting started with FreeCAD. A number of viewers of the full series had trouble setting up their installations to look like the version in the video.

    Having gotten fairly bumped out of Fusion 360 with their new plans and big limitations as an unpaid user, at first blush FreeCad is beating out other packages I tried as replacements. I had big problems with SelfCAD. The thing that makes or breaks these CAD packages is the strength of the "Community" around it. So, thanks for this share.

    I have been using FreeCad since Jul 2020 for Windows 10. The app works great, no issues except that it does take about 15-25 seconds to load when I click on it. I am running my OS from Intel SSD drive and the application is on a fast 2Tb HD. I keep all of my applications separated from the OS and it seems to be okay. I love Freecad for its simplicity, but there is still a lot to learn.

    if you decompress a zip file into its usable folder ... and want a desktop shortcut ... RIGHT click (the button furthest from your thumb) find send-to create desktop shortcut and left click that ... it will place the executable file on your desktop ... it is the same idea as copying your dwg file from the folder that was created when you downloaded the mac app and then copied the executable to the apps folder ... you literally created a shortcut to the executable file ... the best option for extracting an installed version of freecad from a compressed file is to extract it to the program files folder under freecad (create a new folder) (that will setup for the 64 bit version) if you use the 32 bit version us program files x86 that is the 32 place for applications NOT in 64 bit variants ... then you find the exe file ( search freecad.exe in the freecad folder or sort by type with a right click) then create a desktop shortcut ... you never should place program folders outside of the program files folders because windows has path troubles if you do not include those paths to those applications i your path statement when you boot up ... Mac is the same but once you drag and drop an app into the app folder it adds the path for you ... and updates the path instantly and will keep it for the next boot as well ...

    FreeCAD? Yikes! Truly horrible (imho) and very unintuitive. Been there and tried it along with a few others like OpenSCAD (if you're of a programming persuasion and enjoy "C") I finally settled on Design Spark mechanical - the lesser brother of the rather lovely Ansys Spaceclaim. Another free CAD package way better than FreeCAD is Fusion360. Personally I didn't get on with that. Of those two, I opted for Design Spark. In the world of CAD each manufacturer has their own "take" on how things should be done, unlike something familiar like a word processor which is pretty much standardized. So you either relate to their approach or recoil in horror! The same holds for circuit design software and pcb layout software. Been there, got the T shirt and have the scars to bear :-)
    Have a look at design spark mechanical if you're interested. I'd be interested in your personal take of it.

    • @MakeWithTech
      @MakeWithTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As a Mac guy, Design Spark does not work for me. I pay for Fusion360 and find I prefer to work in FreeCAD. The .19 pre-release is a significant move forward. If you are happy with Design Spark there is no reason to switch and I agree that each CAD program has its own style. For me, the combination of Tinkercad for very simple quick things and FreeCAD works great.

      I am with FreeCAD since 0.15 and it grew a lot. The new 0.19 and especially the future 0.20 will be game changer here. Your data at your hand is the motto here. No payment to access your files later on, when the free trail is over. No forced internet connection and support for Linux. Yes, FreeCAD comes with a price at first. It takes some time to get started, but when it clicks, you unterstand how CAD works in general.

    • @cr6925
      @cr6925 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@guidomersmann9744 I'd disagree with you saying "once it clicks you understand how CAD works" I already do - but that's not with FreeCAD ;-) but hey, if FreeCAD works for you and you're getting the results you want, without it being a hampering and unnecessary horrible tortuous experience, then great! :-)
