Alf vs Sendo has to be one of the best fights in the series. For a long time, I wasn't sure if any fight could beat Miyata/RBJ or Takamura/Hawk and of course, the second Ippo/Sendo match but this fight was nuts. I fucking love Alf because his two-faced nature is super cool. He's street down to the bone, the calmness all a facade. Paired with Sendo's wild animalistic nature...too good.
Honestly, i kinda like that ippo is a trainer..if his story arc is to create champions by training them...be a succesor to kamagawa..I don't mind that at all..If Ippo comes out of retirement, they need to make Ippo fight more confidently..

How can you train away brain damage? Ippo coming back sends the wrong message. You don't train away CTE. Pretending Ippo didn't have it is bad writing. Let him stay retired. Fighters who get disabled with CTE are human beings who deserve to be in this story too.
@@KevinJDildonik To be fair the entire reason this happened in the first place was because even though he's one of the better fighters to adapting to new adversity. Kamogawa projected his hard headedness to fighting on Ippo. Thinking Ippo was just like him and wasn't a technical fighter. Yet his shown high level use of other guard the few times he has both in the anime and manga. Such as Proficient use of the Cross Guard, his own special variation i call X guard. Amazing High Guard here and there. So on and so forth. Had Kamogawa made Ippo utilize these more he would have gotten hit half as much as he normally did. That and made him master more head movement techniques. Ippo's entire style relies off loading power off the centerline. As such combined with all these defenses and now his Parries, Frames, and Hand Traps he seems to employ quite a bit after retirement. If he came back he would be like Roberto Duran mixed with Mike Tyson. But to make it work he would have to change how he fights as well instead of always pressing forward to get his short arms to reach. He should Peekaboo fight like Floyd Patterson and Counter Box out of the style instead basically. This would mean he would with all this added up probably take only like a 10th of the punches he normally would. He's shown to have insane reactions dodging point blank more then most other do. So if he distance fought the chances of hitting him would be negligible. Basically he would have to go the rest of his career nigh flawlessly. This could work since the one thing he complains about Infighting is that you have to waste all your energy to get inside just for a chance to get one or two big shots off. Instead he could use Peekaboo to counter from the outside as the opponent steps into punch during and exchange. This would have helped Ippo's one big weakness being short arms. The reason I would know as I suffer from most of these downsides and have a very similar boxing style to Ippo myself. And this was the conclusion about Peekaboo I came to myself. If I let the opponent start trading then say duck in right as they start the combo since they have no time to backstep i'm guaranteed at least one body shot from that position. If not a follow up to the head Peekaboo's one of the few styles where even if used from any range positioning will always give you a huge advantage over your opponent. Especially cause as you dodge/slip/duck it loads your weight onto the front of the feet. This style sets up offense using defense itself basically luring your opponent into a false sense of security. Making them think your gonna be a sand bag when in reality that's what your gonna make them do. And unless they're at the highest level they probably wouldn't notice this much if at all. Until it's way too late to back out.
I don't understand why people think Ippo will not take the stage anymore. Every great person has to go through struggles, and that's what makes the story worth watching. We also saw Miyata struggling and fighting depression before his fight with Jimmy Sisphar. This Mexico Arc will change Ippo, and he will come back so strong he'll never lose again. At least that is what I anticipate.

Ippo should stay retired. It's a disgrace to real life sufferers of CTE to say he "got over" being "punch drunk".

But in reality every nerve ending and muscle are fighting against them half the time. Even if they look perfect one hit in exchanges will send them in and out of consciousness. Had Ippo just learned other Shell Guards like High Guard, and got him to use his specialties like X guard and Cross Guard more. He might have been able to soak a lot more damage then he usually does. With much less penalty in the long run to boot especially since Ippo is shown to adapt an learn new techniques quicker then most people. Simply put this is Kamogawa's fault partly since he projected his hard headed weakness onto Ippo. When in reality Ippo learns at the rate above even some standard champions. He's shown to adapt even under the worst circumstances. And evolves entire new techniques from that adversity something most boxers real or fictional can't claim to do. The closest i've seen to that level of adaptation is Takeda from the Manhwa The Boxer.

Dual exchanges have actually to my memory NEVER been used in an Ippo match to this degree. Sendo can use them to catch a faster and better boxer, forcing an exchange of power. I don’t think any of Ricardo’s opponents have ever done anything like that!!!!
He did use them in the rookie tournament a lot of times, with Jason Ozuma and Hayami. And when he was champion he survived the Dempsey Roll dual exchanges with Shimabukuro
Im so happy with this. Cause i always felt Sendo was Ippos greatest rival. And i feel the Miyata/Ippo finale never really had any stakes. They were both prodigies out of the gate. Sendo beating guys Ippo lost to kinda makes the stakes a bit better. I have no idea if Sendo or Ricardo is Ippos final boss
Miyata is more like an idol for Ippo, in fact ippo respected him too much to give his all against him. In the manga Itagaki realises this. Sendo is a better rival because the fight against miyata is more a test of chase the mouse. Against sendo is a brawl, a colision of trains, a more damaging fight with more brutality

This fight is example that Sendo neglects a lot his defense and guard throwing jabs rear hands upper and hooks un guarded always and recibing too much punishment.
I’d prefer just an injury that puts him out for a few months to even a year. I really would not want Sendo to die or have to quit being a boxer forever. If it was moreso a provocation on everything Sendo stands for, and it pisses Ippo off to see his friend be disrespected that way, that would be different. So less Kickboxer and more Bloodsport, if you understand that reference. If not, watch both of those movies.

Here’s how I think it should go down in order to have ippos come back in a solid and satisfying way. Obviously Ricardo said who ever won this fight would get to fight him next and as you can see sendo won. So now it’s sendo vs Ricardo. It should be Ricardo dominating sendo for the first 2-3 rounds with his clean and first class boxing and then maybe in 4-6th round sendo is able to bring out the brawler in Ricardo by actually hurting and some what intimidating Ricardo. After this have them slug it out and make it seem like sendos gonna actually win with some hype shit but then sendo gets stopped before he’s able to land a “final blow” and have him die bc of a crazy counter or Ricardo just loses it and starts going berserk on sendo with the ref being too late to stop sendos death. Ik it sounds weird towards the end but it would give ippo the exact motivation to train his hardest and he would also get to observe how Ricardos fights. It would also be a nice ending to ippo for him to finally obtain the world belt bc I mean, ippos 1300+ chps as of rn. Sorry for the essay if you got this far lmao

People shouldn't view HNI as your typical shounen anime, but as something more complex like HxH, where anything can happen at any time and no main character is safe from career ending injuries or even death. Boxing is a violent and dangerous sport. It is not an anime where the good guys always win and bad guys lose. Anything can happen in boxing, so it's best to stop thinking that Ippo is no longer going to be playing an important part of the story. This is his story after all and Sendo is a main character who deserves this character arc. HNI hasn't disappointed yet after 1300 chapters. Also, Julian, your music selection is great for HNI. Not rlly if didn't switch to in fighting sendo would've adapted, his instincts would've controlled the first few rounds before gonzales can. No way a top 2 boxer would make the same mistake as Nargo. Whenever sendo actually hits, he slowly builds up this pressure which makes any counter puncher hesitate which causes most fights for sendo to make him come out from the winning side.
I think Sendo is going to fight either Vorg the IBF champ or Martinez the WBA champ because this fight was actually sanction as a chance for a title shot for the belt of Martinez. I remember the first encounter of Sendo against Vorg it was clearly won by Vorg, maybe Sendo and Vorg will settle that problem

You're right about the instinct thing in a way. I think Sendo's instinct to step in past Alf's counters in Round 2 was what put Gonzales in trouble - but then Alf beat Sendo mercilessly for a further two rounds. What with how injured Sendo was from that pummelling, if Alf had calmed down after Round 4 and spent the rest of the match outboxing, it wouldn't matter what brawler gimmicks Sendo pulled out - he'd have lost the fight. Guess Alf just woke up and thought "Hey, how about I lose? That sounds like a good thing to do!"

I know it’s a late response but I’ve been thinking a lot about this too. With what’s happening now I think people have forgotten that Miyata is good enough to be very relevant in the story. I also can see Itagaki and Imai possibly being in the mix too… A super 8 tournament for undisputed would be amazing
In general I think since Gonzales entered the scene Morikawa has leveled up another level. It sounds weird cause by then we have had over 1000 chapters but the art, the themes, his storytelling, the fight progression all got noticably better over time from there on in my opinion.

Simply put this is Kamogawa's fault partly since he projected his hard headed weakness onto Ippo. When in reality Ippo learns at the rate above even some standard champions. He's shown to adapt even under the worst circumstances. And evolves entire new techniques from that adversity something most boxers real or fictional can't claim to do. The closest i've seen to that level of adaptation is Takeda from the Manhwa The Boxer.

Dual exchanges have actually to my memory NEVER been used in an Ippo match to this degree. Sendo can use them to catch a faster and better boxer, forcing an exchange of power. I don’t think any of Ricardo’s opponents have ever done anything like that!!!!

Im so happy with this. Cause i always felt Sendo was Ippos greatest rival. And i feel the Miyata/Ippo finale never really had any stakes. They were both prodigies out of the gate. Miyata is more like an idol for Ippo, in fact ippo respected him too much to give his all against him. In the manga Itagaki realises this. Sendo is a better rival because the fight against miyata is more a test of chase the mouse. Against sendo is a brawl, a colision of trains, a more damaging fight with more brutality

Here’s how I think it should go down in order to have ippos come back in a solid and satisfying way. Obviously Ricardo said who ever won this fight would get to fight him next and as you can see sendo won. So now it’s sendo vs Ricardo. It should be Ricardo dominating sendo for the first 2-3 rounds with his clean and first class boxing and then maybe in 4-6th round sendo is able to bring out the brawler in Ricardo by actually hurting and some what intimidating Ricardo. After this have them slug it out and make it seem like sendos gonna actually win with some hype shit but then sendo gets stopped before he’s able to land a “final blow” and have him die bc of a crazy counter or Ricardo just loses it and starts going berserk on sendo with the ref being too late to stop sendos death. Ik it sounds weird towards the end but it would give ippo the exact motivation to train his hardest and he would also get to observe how Ricardos fights. It would also be a nice ending to ippo for him to finally obtain the world belt bc I mean, ippos 1300+ chps as of rn. Sorry for the essay if you got this far lmao

I understand how you feel, Doc. This match, which could have inspired even dead men to jump up and start fighting, ended at chapter 1308; we're currently on chapter 1430, and we're still no closer to seeing Ippo return to the ring than we were all these months ago.

People shouldn't view HNI as your typical shounen anime, but as something more complex like HxH, where anything can happen at any time and no main character is safe from career ending injuries or even death. Boxing is a violent and dangerous sport. It is not an anime where the good guys always win and bad guys lose. Anything can happen in boxing, so it's best to stop thinking that Ippo is no longer going to be playing an important part of the story. This is his story after all and Sendo is a main character who deserves this character arc. HNI hasn't disappointed yet after 1300 chapters.

Not rlly if didn't switch to in fighting sendo would've adapted, his instincts would've controlled the first few rounds before gonzales can. No way a top 2 boxer would make the same mistake as Nargo. Whenever sendo actually hits, he slowly builds up this pressure which makes any counter puncher hesitate which causes most fights for sendo to make him come out from the winning side.

You're right about the instinct thing in a way. I think Sendo's instinct to step in past Alf's counters in Round 2 was what put Gonzales in trouble - but then Alf beat Sendo mercilessly for a further two rounds.
What with how injured Sendo was from that pummelling, if Alf had calmed down after Round 4 and spent the rest of the match outboxing, it wouldn't matter what brawler gimmicks Sendo pulled out - he'd have lost the fight.
Guess Alf just woke up and thought "Hey, how about I lose? That sounds like a good thing to do!"
