For English speakers, the Dutch have 2 words for a canal. Gracht is a canal inside a town or a city. Connecting towns or cities is the function of a kanaal.

Fond memories of Utrecht...many years ago I was working for what was then the British (State-Owned) Railways and palled on with a Dutch family who worked for NS - the Dutch State Railways. They took me out for a wonderful meal at an Indonesian restaurant - the famous "Rijstafel" with loads and loads of spicy curries and sambals. Absolutely delicious! Not that far away is the little town of Breukelen - I understand that this is the place that "Brooklyn" in New York is named after....worth remembering that before it was New York it was Nieuw Amsterdam.
    Anyway - -lovely place!

May I repeat a point I have made before. Utrecht is THE centre of the Dutch railway system, and is therefore ideal as a base for exploring the WHOLE of the Netherlands - and perhaps even further afield. So do not just stay a night or two as Dennis suggests at the end of the video! Stay there for about a week!

9:58 the academy building was built in front of the Kapittelzaal, the place where the Union of Utrecht was signed. This is the actual place where the Netherlands as a state was born

A relaxing video with a good overview of the city highlights. And there is so much more than just the mentioned museums and city center. Utrecht is surrounded with beautiful castles, easy to reacht by bus or bicycle. Be carefull riding a bike in the city though. In the city center there is some kind of war going on between pedestrians and cyclists: pedestrians walking in the middle of the street, cyclists not using their bell or giving direction. But it is a great city. Do not hesitate to have a peek in small narrow streets and see were the end. Sometimes you end up in a little city park or a public garden. Or you get a view of some buildings even older than along the canals. Further more, in the Buurkerk is a nice museum of musical instruments. trust me, it is fun. Especially when you are with small children. Also fun to do when having children: the railroad museum. it is near the city center. In the city center are some castles, hard to recognize, but really beautiful. And like mentioned before outside the city there some castles worth visiting: Castle Oud Zuilen and Castle the Haar. The latter is stunning and huge. however not as old as it looks. It has an interesting history however, related to the Rothshield family. Thank you Dennis for sharing and making this lovely film about my town of birth.

Love your videos, I'm dutch myself to be honest prefer not the be in amsterdam or utrecht finding it much to busy. I recommend going to friesland thats very interresting to visit because it can be a whole different experience then you had in utrecht or amsterdam

Thanks for that suggestion. I know there are many parts of the country that are little-known but beautiful. I'm going back again and will visit your suggestion. What cities in Friesland do you like the most? But Utrecht in the off-season is not busy.
