thanks for reviewing this. You're the first person I've found reacting to Being There on all of TH-cam. I'm surprised no one else has reacted to Being There before you. It's a very interesting film.
oh ya, Melvin Douglas - was a great actor (in Ghost Story - great horror movie BTW) and in 70's tv roles, great actor, glad he got his oscar - rip Mel.
I appreciate your review. As one who's always loved this strange movie, you helped me to see some aspects I hadn't thought of. I love films that can be watched numerous times and can still provide more insights.
One of my favorites. If you notice in the scene where he's having dinner with everyone, there's a shot that suggests he's not really there. In my opinion he is an angel who appears at the time of death - then moves on.
Fantastic reaction! I just found your channel and am subscribing right now! So many great titles you've done! Love this movie. One of my favorite Sellers movies, and my favorite Hal Ashby movie.
This film is pure genius, one of my all time favorites. I about fell off my chair when, about half way thru, you compared Chance to Jesus. Few people GET that until the very end when we see him walk on water.
I agree, the script for that matter was excellent. No wonder Peter Sellers wanted to make that film for so long. I did compare Chance to Jesus because they both where so good-hearted and pure and spoke in metaphors which happened to inspire people. The ending was a positive surprise. Like a cherry on the top 👌
well in a literal sense, Jesus and Buddha were kept mostly to their jobs and cocooned away from greater society, so Chance's awakening into how the world works, and growing genuine connections to people, as well as giving sage advice based on his job and has been able to show things that most people lack in society, peace and happiness and wisdom, from just doing simple things, and thus becomes a role model because he seems such an exemplar, almost treated like royalty or in Chance's case a Deity. Also connections to nature is also a nod to Adam and Eve, and the idea of the story of Chance told in 7 days in the book seem a nod towards Biblical elements.
What a great compliment. As a viewer of reactions myself, i'm always trying to fulfill what a lot of other reaction channels are missing, so my focus is on the art of film itself and not so much on the growth of this channel. I may not have much subscribers but the ones i have seem to appreciate what i do. That's a great thing to have, so thank you so much!
I'm not sure if it's me relatable put I advise everybody who enjoys being there to watch the 2007 movie "The Man From Earth". Almost seems like a college project, but tears me down hard, just like BT, Garp, Gump, Harold & Maude, Requiem for a Dream, Sometimes a great notion, Stand by me, even Joe vs. The Volcano lol "Thank you for my life"- always gets me 😭
Thanks for reacting to this classic - top 20 of all time - you are the first AFAIK - i check every few months (knowing of classics - including the forgotten - i check every few months for said forgotten classics - and this one is one of them - and thanks for watching and reacting!). Its a "thinking movie" - about a man with no character - not to mean his is mean, he just is a "pod" (reference to The Body Snatchers - both the 50's and the 70's versions are excellent if you have not seen either - 70's version is better and up there with the best classics...............anyway i use the term "pod" to mean Chancy lacks real identity/feeling - others place their own feelings (in the best case - which is the honest case - like Ben, who was rich and had no true friends until he ran over Chancey (lol) - where he found one - and i think he did - Chancey "loved" Ben (but Chancey's nature was limited so not "real" love, while Ben - projecting his loneliness and wishing to seek out friendship, found it with Chancey) its a smart film about introspection - know your self, place your priorities - to you? or be fake and project yourself image as you wish others to see you - or to others. Chancey was a "blank slate" - he let good rich man like Ben to see him as his friend (and he was, but not in the true sense with mutual love - Chancey lacked that capacity (and the Black women that got mad with him over the "old man" that died after Chancey's non-feeling, checked herself after getting mad (Chancey lacked both intellect and true deep feeling - i.e. a blank slate for others to "project" their psycho onto). anyway - great movie (oh and BTW IMO me thinks as an Atheist that has read the Bible and affirm its wisdom for living life morally and honestly, do think Christians project upon the man Chancey/Jesus their psyche irrespective of the real man's morals or character. 2-cents. there are so many "classics" that are forgotten due to time - 50-80 yrs ago (its old so it sucks - so wisdom sucks because its old and there is no CGI - lol), thanks for covering this gem. I'll check out your reactions to other films, hope to find you found gems. ;-)
I saw this in the theatre.Great movie! Sellers was a master class in comedy. You might want to check out the Pink Panther movies. Another great one of his is The Party.
I adore this film. I have actually bought it on DVD for my Dad this Christmas. I hope he enjoys it too. If you haven't seen it already you should definitely check out The Party. another great Peter Sellers film
Really one of the greatest films and at this point you are the only 'first time watching' reaction. It was very popular when it came out but is not so well known now. You called it early on about Jesus. It is so profound. He is simple but his simple outlook has so much to teach. Just great.
Believe it or not, but just a few days ago I added 'Wake in Fright' to my list while I was going through the list of films Ted Kotcheff has directed. I'll move it up in priority now. 🫵 The other ones I've already seen, but they're some great recommendations. Thanks!
He can walk on water. He is Christ. He got on really well with the Russian diplomat (not shown), Mr Rand has recommended him as the next president. He has come to save the world, from “boom boom” and “boom boom”. The whole movie hinges on him walking on water, then it all falls into place. It’s a profound masterpiece but also very funny.
I've already seen Lolita. But i have to admit, i found Adrian Lyne's version slightly better as it was more emotionally disturbing but touching. When it comes to Kubrick there is only "Eyes Wide Shut" and "Fear and Desire" left for me to see.

Good Reaction video man. If you Havnet seen it you should check out Stanley Kubrick's Doctor Strangelove (How I learned to Love the Bomb). Peter Sellers plays three rolls.
Thank you. I've already seen Dr. Strangelove (like i said in the video 😉) and The Party, where he plays an Indian guy. Next Peter Sellers film will probably be The Pink Panther. When it comes to Kubrick there is only "Eyes Wide Shut" and "Fear and Desire" left for me to see.
If you watch the vary close the "old man" was his illegitimate father. His mother was the housekeeper and kept him there to cover it up. When the old man dies there's no record of him so he's put out on the street
"Life is a state of mind."
A wonderful quote to a wonderful film
I like this explanation.. “ He walked on water because he didn’t know he couldn’t.”

Yep one of my dad's favorites
Two other firsts if you want to stand out of the crowd: The Grifters (1990) and Be Kind Rewind (2008).
Yes, finally somebody has done this masterpiece of a film!!
@@paulklenknyc I thought Be Kind Rewind with Jack Black and Mos Deff was made in the 2000s?
@@MDBowron You’re right - just corrected it
This was a simply incredible movie. Peter Sellers and Shirley MacLaine were both at their peak here. Thanks for watching it.
Great book!

Oh yeah, and Shirley MacLaine's character is even called Eve. I haven't noticed that.
My take was that he didn't know he can't walk on water.
Wow. You are the best reaction channel...you don't try to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Hal Ashby also directed "Harold and Maude", "Shampoo" and "Coming Home"--all fantastic.
And i have an eye on all of them. So one day when the time is right... 👀
@@watchingcodyrice I would love to support your channel and recommend some great movies--I've lived thrui them all!--but alas... perhaps one day!!
Hal Ashby didn't direct "In The Heat of The Night". Rather, he was the film editor. Norman Jewison directed "In The Heat of The Night".
Oh, seems like I've looked in the wrong section on IMDb. He even won an Oscar for that. Thanks for clearing that up. 👍
One of most important films of the 1970's.
This was once my favorite film. It always seemed like a predecessor to Forest Gump to me. Excellent. Thanks for reacting.
