"Time Bandits" (1981) is like half a Monty Python film. It has both John Cleese and Michael Palin in it, and it was directed by Terry Gilliam. I highly recommend watching it. 😉👍

Graham Chapman plays Brian Cohen and Biggus Dikkus
John Cleese plays the Head Priest at the Stoning, the Head Centurion and Reg, the Leader of the PFJ
Michael Palin plays Mr. Big Nose, the ex-leper beggar, Pontius Pilate, the boring preacher, and the guy hanging in the prison cell
Eric Idle plays the obnoxious guy at the Sermon, Stan/Loretta, and the beard salesman. He also wrote and sang "Always Look on The Bright Side of Life"
Terry Jones plays Brian's mother (Mandy) and the mystic with the juniper bushes
Terry Gilliam plays the fire and brimstone preacher and the deaf guard
    Sue Jones-Davies plays Judith Iscariot
You have to look quick to see him, but George Harrison plays Mr Papadopoulos, a member of the People's Front of Judea.

In case you weren't already aware, Terry Gilliam, the sole American member of Monty Python and the man responsible for all of the animated sequences, has had a pretty long and interesting career as a film diector. If you haven't seen them, you might want to check out Brazil, Time Bandits, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Fisher King, and/or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. All cult classics.

Oddly enough, the woman who played Judith was elected the mayor of a town in Wales at some point in the last few years. Her first act as mayor was to cancel the ban preventing theaters in town from showing The Life of Brian. The ban had been imposed shortly after the movie was released.

There's a Film/Movie reactors never seem to touch (Pythonwise) AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

It's an absolute piece of crap, you should absolute NEVER watch that piece of crap, not over the TV series. The sketches are all fifty times better in their TV counterparts, in front of a live audience, as opposed to mutilating them for a movie, I can't believe this guy is recommending such a piece of crap that Python themselves hated. Either watch the TV show, or don't, but DON'T watch this piece of crap. Unbelievable. The absolute WORSE way to watch Python is to watch that piece of crap.

This film was financed by rock and pop stars, primarily George Harrison of the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, the flying circus was their weekly 30min tv comedy sketch show, there is a film of them performing some of the sketches, "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl". Many places banned the screening of Life of Brian, one of those places was a town in Wales called Aberystwyth, years later the actress who played Judith became Mayor of Aberystwyth and the ban was lifted. Incidentally, there's a film that's considered a sequel to "A Fish Called Wanda", same cast, different storyline. Check out "Fierce Creatures".

After living on this planet and in the UK for 28 years, there have been times when it's really felt like the essence of Monty Python is literally in our blood. I've been on youth trips to the countryside, where on 3-5 mile walks there's been several choruses of 'Bright Side of Life'. Then a couple of years ago on a trip Scotland, walking around an island just off Oban me and my sisters out of nowhere did a performance of several pieces from the soundtrack of 'Holy Grail'😄Definitely in the blood! Though that island was also giving off the right vibes haha. Thinking about it now ... we weren't all that far away from where they filmed some of that.
'Meaning of Life' is certainly worth watching, which includes my favourite musical sketch from them. Outside of Python, Michael Palin's travel docs that he's been making from the 80's to the present, are really interesting! His collected diaries can also be pretty fascinating, which cover the 'Python Years' and beyond🙌

Same here, including Python-as-campfire-songs, and I live in Kentucky, where we can recite the dead parrot sketch with the best of 'em. Python are truly universal. I hear that Elvis Presley used to entertain his wife at home by imitating the Pepperpot Ladies, which would be something to hear!

When Holy Grail came out there wasn't really an alternative to seeing it in theaters. Cassette movie rentals didn't heat up until after 1980 so so no video stores, no streaming, no nothing. And they certainly weren't going to air it on broadcast TV.

Yes, the guy who plays Brian is Graham Chapman. You got Michael Palin
Eric Idle is the guy who calls Palin "Big Nose",
Terry Jones is "Mandy", Brians mum.
    John Cleese you'll recognise.
Terry Gilliam does the animations and appears in The Holy Grail.
If you want to see more of John Cleese, you might want to check out "Fawlty Towers", a sit com starring Cleese , Connie Booth, Prunella Scales, and Andrew Sachs. 2 seasons, 12 episodes. Highly recommend it.

There used to be a cultish, old school flea pit cinema in Kings Cross (London) called the Scala. It used to do themed all nighters. Zombie movies, or cultish psychedelic movies from the 60's, old 50's B movies etc. One Easter Sunday I went there with friends for an Easter weekend all nighter. Greatest Story Ever Told, followed by, The Last Temptation of Christ, finishing up with, yep, you've guessed it, Life Of Brian. Scala was great, but Stanley Kubrick had it closed down. He sued them after they showed, Clockwork Orange. A film Kubrick himself had banned from being shown in the UK, due to it's effect on the violence subculture (skinheads particularly) in Britain in the early 70's. So he banned it being shown in Britain and when he found out about the Scala showing it in some of it's 'all nighters' he sued. The settlement caused The Scala to go bankrupt and close. The ban on Clockwork Orange in the UK remained until after Kubrick's death.

Giving Holy Grail a rewatch is a great way to familiarize yourself with the Pythons faces and voices - Graham Chapman (RIP) plays Arthur, John Cleese is Lancelot, Eric Idle is Sir Robin, Michael Palin is Galahad, Terry Jones (RIP) is Sir Bedevere, and Terry Gilliam is Patsy.
Gilliam and Jones co-direct the Python movies - Meaning of Life being the last.
Gilliam goes off to be an incredible director, and the rest go off onto their own projects, with or without other Pythons.
The 'Python-adjacent' movies, with 2 or more of the crew, are also great. Some of the underrated ones are Erik The Viking (Jones & Cleese - avoid the 'directors cut'), Splitting Heirs (Idle & Cleese), Fierce Creatures (same cast as Fish Called Wanda) and Yellowbeard (Chapman, Cleese & Idle)

There's only one other movie worth watching (The Meaning Of Life) which is good, but the GREATEST is their TV show. From Life of Brian to Fiddler on the Roof! What a gear change. Of course both movies have singing, and both movies are waiting for the Messiah.
One good way of learning who's who in the Python troupe is to watch some of the original TV series, which was Monty Python's Flying Circus. They would play different characters the same way, but seeing as it was lower budget TV it's easier to see who's doing what.
The troupe were all writer/comedians coming out of other shows. John Cleese and Graham Chapman were college buddies who were part of At Last The 1948 Show, in which you can see the roots of Python. Michael Palin and Terry Jones were writers on a more kid-oriented history comedy show. They got Terry Gilliam to do animations, the idea being they could use cartoons to link sketches without always having to have a traditional punchline. This kept things moving fast, which is about the only meaning "flying circus" had.
Carol Cleveland was an unofficial member of the troupe. She was the go-to performer when they needed a real woman and couldn't get away with just putting a dress on Terry Jones. In Holy Grail, she was Zoot, the lady of Castle Anthrax who tried to seduce Sir Gawain (Michael Palin).

I still see Monty Python's Flying Circus as the predecessor to SNL. I grew up in that era, but was often not allowed to stay up late enough to watch them, so I relied upon sleep overs. On PBS here, Monty Python was late '70's, which is pretty much where SNL started, although Monty Python was actually much earlier, the license contracts delayed its airing.

As you can clearly see, Graham Chapman (Brian) is not at all Jewish :)

I love that he accidentally started a religion and within 2 minutes it had already split into two factions, the followers of the shoe and the followers of the gourd

This movie is more than criminally funny. I'm not sure my devout Catholic parents ever forgave me for taking them to see it. Romans go home!!!
