Regardless of your feelings about the overall quality of the film itself, you have to admit that for a movie released in 1993, Jurassic Park contains some mighty fine lookin’ dinosaurs. In fact, the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park look so good that many film critics and fans contend that the film’s CGI effects still hold up today nearly three decades later, with some even going so far as to say they look better than some scenes in more recent Jurassic Park films. The funny thing about that, however, is that while Jurassic Park is often singled out for its groundbreaking CGI, there are actually very few moments in the film that were realised using such newfangled technology. I was on that team. It wasn't a shot of a walking T-Rex that swayed Spielberg, but the running cycle of a velociraptor. Spielberg was actually shooting Schindler's List in Poland and we were broadcasting the dinosaur CGI to him in real-time in a pioneering, totally custom and home-made version of video-conferencing. The animation was done in Softimage and the surfaces were done in a combination of Alias and Renderman.

I suppose my memory failed me, in the behind the scenes on the DVD I always thought it was a skeleton version of a T-Rex, and then later a fleshed out version that finally swayed Spielberg. I'm in no position to argue with you, but now I want to go and re-watch the behind the scenes documentary. Though they could have gotten it wrong. Obviously they did. Unless I'm just remembering wrong. Which is very likely lol. Pretty cool to see someone who was on the JP team commenting on here.
At first I was confused because I thought Spielberg made Schindler's List after Jurassic Park. But I checked and it turned out the editing and postprod of JP did overlap with the shooting of Schindler's List.
Pretty incredible that such different genres could be made back to back by the same person, with both being outstanding achievements in cinema.

I feel like the best use of CGI should be to enhance and complement practical effects wherever possible. Build everything you can and then use CG to fill in the gaps.

Zman Jace I bet most directors feel that way, but that means building a digital and real model then spending more time to make sure they match in movement etc. then you have the time to do both. I bet while most would like to go this route, without a Spielberg sized budget they can’t afford to.
Gotta admit, the T-rex props are some of the best Hollywood craftsmanship of all time.
That’s pretty much what they did in Jurassic Park. 27 years later and no one has truly learnt this lesson.
The men in suits say full CGI is fine and the audiences still pay the ticket.
I would still argue that the texture and lighting of the T-Rex in that final scene is still utterly mind blowing. It doesn't have any of the smooth shininess, or flat lighting that continued to plagued CGI the 20+ years after that movie. Pause the vid on some of those moments and marvel at the actual wrinkles and ridges of the T-Rexs skin being picked out by dynamic light and shadows. Rendering that shit must have taken months back then! And the people who make that virtual model were utter geniuses.
I think they also used a good colour pallet. The browns look very effective. Very muddy and organic looking. It blends into the natural background very well.
Given that there are so few minutes of CGI in the movie, I think that helps a lot. I would assume that meant they could devote a lot more time to make each model and scene the very best it could be

And glad they didn’t once mention the whole “they had to dry the T-Rex between scenes” thing that everyone and their grandma knows about by now.

It's almost like Spielberg knows what he is doing...
He also made Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, War of the Worlds and Minority Report just over a decade later. No one is perfect.

Shame that it makes it more vulnerable to Covid 19. You can open a handle with an elbow or easily use any improvised object. Whereas a knob you have to grasp with your hand, to turn. Meaning you would need to constantly disinfect your hands or use gloves (unless you lived alone and never had any visitors). Or not bother and thereby increase the risk of transmission.

So it is pointless suggesting that, just to salve consciences, when it does nothing. If you find wearing a mask too inconvenient to your lifestyle, just be honest and say you are happy to let all the vulnerable people in society die instead.

The part about there not being much dinosaur screen time reminds me of another Spielberg movie: Jaws. Barely any of the shark on camera.
Much like Alien. That thing didn't get much screen time either.
I think that was more due to the shark constantly malfunctioning , though.

Daven looks a lot more natural in his delivery on camera than he did a few years ago. Is that due to practical effects or cgi?

Being a VFX artist myself I can say that the CGI used in that film still is of a higher quality then a lot of stuff churned out nowadays, certainly with the technology used back then.
You should have Simon just move his mouth like he is reading while you provide the voice-over. That would be funny to me.

When this was made we had just gotten our first fax machine in our office. It took so long for faxes to go thru that we had one person wholly assigned to the task. You'd put your sheets you wanted faxed in a basket with instructions and you'd usually get them back the next day. Smoking was still allowed inside and the entire building (huge) was a constant cloud of smoke and stink from ashtrays. And the insulation was asbestos- seriously. It was a tier 3 automotive supplier in the Detroit area. Engineering plans were still done on PAPER!! By hand! It feels like it was 3 million years ago.

True, due to the rain the head of the T-Rex was way to heavy,
and even the safety glass broke.
Therefor the kids where not acting.
@@kevinvoogt Yeah, this is one reason why the studio has to pay a stage guardian. This guardian is paid by the studio but works for a third party and has veto power when it come to the kids welfare. Although this can also be a legal guardian or parent.

From stories I've heard, it also seems like the digital effects department was given a lot of time to get things right -- if the CG elements are interacting with the real environment, that means they had to be working on those shots from early in production/pre-production. Whereas nowadays every effects house is swamped with work that has to be done in two weeks to make it in time for the release date, so there's no time to do it carefully and well. And then we get Judi Dench as a cat with human hands.
A good channel to follow about VFX is Corridor Crew. They say exactly this. That most VFX studios have the capability to produce amazing effects but are in a serious crunch for time, especially when they script and scenes are changes and they have to go back and rush in changes.

Stan Winston was an animatronic guru. I was a supplier to Stan Winston Studio during this time. I remember they had Alien and Predator statues in the lobby and they were frightening! T-Rex started out as a sub scale clay model, then full size. The skin was molded out of silicone rubber with in-mold coloration that gave it a life-like appearance.
The things you can accomplish when everyone is at the top of their game and willing to actually work together, who would've thought 😅
You still have a few more hair follicles to lose before you can become Simon.
I'm always pleasantly surprised how well that movie holds up.
I was amazed by that movie. I always said the dinosaurs couldn't have looked more real if one had actually come back to life and walked right up to you. That film blew my mind!
I think the animation is one of the main reasons the CGI looked so good decades later, mostly because everything was animated as if it were a stop motion animation. There’s an interview with Tippett where he says the stop motion animators would animate with the dino controller, and the computer dudes would think there was something wrong with the data, but when rendered out it would look perfect. There’s an exaggeration to the animation that just tricks out brains better than it was more ‘accurate’.
Also, it always needs to be said: the jeep is also CGI in that scene.

Apparently, in the final fight between T-Rex and raptors, there is a single frame where the raptor in the T-Rex's mouth disappears as party of a glitch in the CGI. But, because it's literally a single frame, no one notices it. It's night impossible to notice unless you slow down the scene.
Probably still the best movie experience i ever had in the theater and it was only $5. I ended up watching it 4 times ( was in the 3rd grade ). You would just be demented to do that these days, not only because it's expensive, but mostly because the movies suck!
As a teen I'd pay for one movie abd then just hangout in the back and watch another movie for free

27 years later, and I still maintain this is one of the greatest movies ever made.
It wasn’t just subtle tricks. The CGI dinosaurs at the end in particular were just.... really well done for the time. The CGI team put in a hell of a lot of work. Even in full lighting, the CGI is still pretty good, even when you are looking straight at them.
In the raptor vs t-rex scene, the audience had also been already primed to think of the effects as incredibly realistic, so the short time that scene lasted wasn't enough for people to be like "wait a minute, this is different!"
That was probably my favorite scene as a kid to be honest! The only time I truly hated it was in the SEGA Jurassic Park game when I couldn't figure out how the hell to kill the raptors! 😂😂😂

I think you've played down how ground breaking the CGI was on this film. It doesn't matter how much there was or what other effects were used to aid the CGI, it still holds up because it was brilliant on its own. Let alone anything else.

Really a very interesting video! I feel like the subtlety of making the dinosaurs more felt than seen is what makes the original Jurassic Park more frightening than its sequels. In some ways it feels more like a horror film, kinda like the original Alien does, like horror with a sci fi angle.
In a nut shell, they didn't rely on CGI. That makes a huge difference. Also, time is what usually seperates good and bad CGI. With so few CGI shots they had the time to make them good.
As much as I like Simon, I do also like me some Daven which is why I like The Brainfood Show so much.

Overuse of CGI usually means that the rest of the film is lacking in some point.
I'm totally blown away by the practical effects at 11:54 when the raptor gets thrown to the skeleton. That thing doesn't only look real, it FEELS real!

Oh, and if Spielberg learned anything from Jaws. They had an animatronic shark that was broken 80% of the time. It was so frustrating that they began filming around it and filming it less and less. In the end the actual shark wasn't really on film for hardly very many minutes of the film, and it worked wonders. It added to the suspense and fear.
I’ll be honest, until this video, I never really realized that any CGI was used in the Jeep attack. I’ve seen it dozens of time and always thought it was a practical effect using the full sized puppet.
A lot of people think that actually....that's all the proof you need about how realistic the CGI looks

Bruce Wayne bought it. Reportedly he's keeping in somewhere in his mansion now, although exactly where remains a mystery as visitors haven't reported seeing the thing. Maybe there is some truth to rumors that the Manor has a secret underground storehouse.
Look up the images of the animatronic Hoggle from the movie Labyrinth, as he looks today! The materials they make such props out of aren't meant to last for several decades; they prioritize looking good at the time of filming and coming in within budget. Sadly, the practical effects stuff is probably showing its age by now.
The animatronics in the movie are not used in the theme park ride. The outer skins are not designed to last: the material will degrade and breakdown over time.

I remember Davin being on the show a few times for years but I just noticed today that he has a very nice face, especially a great jaw and chin.
Jurassic Park was the last film I saw at the drive-in when I was a kid. I didn't get to go to a drive-in again till I was in my 30s.

Sort of like a lot of "CGI" elements in Tron were manual animation...
templarw20 indeed. they deserved a technical Oscar for that movie 10 times over… For those who have never seen the documentary on how it was made, the photographic process to make some of the scenes by itself is amazing.
They also used a really good script and actors to make you think you saw stuff you didn't really. They kept your eyes and attention on the people running away in terror so that you didn't even stop to think about what they were running from. The scene with the kids in the kitchen is a very good example of this. Watching the movie I didn't even see the stage hand's hand on the door to push it open for the creature. My focus was on the head of the beast and then the kids with too little time to look around the scene.
Answer: By filming at night and using lots of shadows.
I cannot count how many times I have seen Jurassic Park. I even went to Jurassic Park world at Universal Orlando a few years ago.

I don't know if this is the problem but he mentioned in a video several days ago that he had a mouth ulcer, a canker sore, depending on where that is in the mouth, and how many of them he has, it can be absolutely debilitating.
They can be caused by all sorts of things but I find that I get them the most when I'm stressed out. We are all certainly going through stressful times.

@@CritterKeeper01 Nope, it's not the same. It's not caused by a virus, it could be I suppose, but generally it's not. Sometimes it's from acidic food. Sometimes it's from friction in your mouth. I often get them on my cheeks where my teeth hit. I have super sharp teeth. Apparently. Also some whitening toothpastes make my mouth react in this way. Most often I get them from stress. It's an autoimmune thing, it's not viral, you can't catch it, it is not contagious.
It's not the same as a fever blister, which would be on the outside of the mouth. Fever blisters are from a virus, herpes simplex, which if I recall correctly is associated with chickenpox.
Ulcers in the mouth are just spots that are super raw. They generally are flat or concave slightly and they are white or very light pink.
And they hurt. A lot. And even the smallest amount of friction, which is constant when you're talking or eating, will send you through the roof.
I am personally not up on the papilloma virus. I do know that it is quite contagious. I don't know what to tell you about the dogs, that can't be pleasant.
Thus why I prefer citing Jurassic Park as having "amazing effects" that are better than some films today, rather than "amazing cgi".
Also, all I could think with the frozen raptor (which I had never noticed before): "Pay no attention to the dino behind the curtain!"

I'm reminded a bit of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, that film also had the team go out of their way to have the animated characters "interact" with the non-animated set as much as possible.
I mean he did a very good job filling in for simon but with simon in the thumbnail it just all seems so fake :(
CGI is CGI. At it's heart it hasn't changed much in the whole 30 years since Terminator 2 days. What's changed is the hardware to get it done. In 1992-1993 it probably took a whole building of server racks a month of running 24/7 just for a 1-minute scene, in addition to graphic artists doing their thing beforehand. Now a single 6-foot rack can do the same thing. Places like ILM still have a whole room of racks, but they are typically doing several movie projects at once.
Ahhh, the lost arts of effects...
... and also story telling. You wouldn't be as impressed were it not for the actors convincing you of stuff.

Remember, this was only 8 years after Young Sherlock Holmes (also Amblin Entertainment) with its stained-glass knight character. That was also an ingenious use of bleeding-edge CGI.

Also, JP's usage of CGI is actually very practical. When you can't move an animatronic + it's rigging and controls across the screen in one take it makes sense to do CGI. What doesn't make sense is the T-Rex lost all it's weight at the end. Pointed out by a lot of film cynics, but apparently it goes from shaking the earth from each foot step to not even scuffing tiled floors.
But the mind set of, "If it can be made in reality or a proxy can be fabricated, do it. If there's no way to actually reasonably do the shot with a proxy or with improv acting, then get some stand in blanks, use CGI compositing and use the minimal amount of CGI that you can." is a very good one that was skimmed over in, what feels like, weeks.

That last sentence is pretty funny, considering Simon is only the host and this guy (Daven Hiskey) is the founder, owner, editor, producer, scriptwriter and host. Pretty sure if Daven wants to host a specific video he could just do so.
It is very rare that I pay to see a movie twice but I did go back to the Theatre for Jurassic Park. I was so impressed with the Dinosaurs, Not so much the Brachiosaurs we first see but every dinosaur after that, I found very impressive and well done.
I still want Simon to do a 'Today I Found Out' about the painting "Whistler's Mother."
Given the fact that Simon hosts a bazillion channels, I am surprised that his voice lasted as long as it did.
And that is why Jurassic Park is my favorite movie of all time. ❤ As a bonus fact, Davin should have told the story of how the animatronic T-Rex used to come alive on its own sometimes, even once almost killing a stage hand who had crawled inside of it to blow dry its soaked skin.
My grandfather was a huge movie collector when VHS was still the main form of 'dvr' lol. Anyway, I remember him having a VHS tape of a behind the scenes documentary with Speilberg and crew interviews, even at 7 or 8 I was fascinated by how it was made and watched the full 2 hour behind the scenes documentary. I personally regard it as one of my all time top 5 movies ever. It holds up so incredibly well!

It makes me think of The Two Towers, when Gollum spins around and the cloak gets whirled around on the ground, from Andy Serkis’s foot actually spinning it when he whipped about. It really helps sell the reality of the presence of the CGI character.
