Exploring Weipa In a Hire Boat

  • Went for a quick lap up to Weipa recently and visited Tackleworld to take one of their hire boats for a spin. I took Nathan, the store manager with me for a bit of a spoon feed and got stuck into the rat barra and a few other tropical species. While I was in the store I picked up a couple of nicely made timber lures by NT Lures.
The morning session saw us fishing high water with a falling tide and we got a few fish but as the tide dropped we found some snags which were loaded with small barra. The little pink NT which was rigged up with #3 BKK Vipers got a heap of attention.
Once the tide dropped out we went for a look to try and jig the channel markers but the wind and tide made this impossible so it cut our day short. At the end of the day it was a fun session, no monsters but plenty of action and an awesome place to be out on the water.
The hire boats here would have to be the best in the country, they’re 5m Cairns Custom Craft hulls with 80hp Honda outboards, 9” side imaging units with an electric motor. If you’re up in Weipa it’s definitely worth popping into the Tackleworld shop there and having a chat to the boys if you’re looking to guide yourself around the area!
Anyway that’s all from me for now, enjoy the video ✌🏻

The Creek you and Nathan were coming out of navigating the channel on is a great little run out spot just to the right where it pools, good surface when first draining 🤙🏼

I was lucky enough to guide here for about 3 years, and in July this year, 20 years after leaving Weipa I took my 16 year old son ( mad fishermen) back to fish for a week with my old boss Dave Newman (Weipa fishing Adventures) who was the first fishing guide in Weipa. It's a magical place and plan to get back asap. Nice vid mate btw.
