I was a teenager when this came out. And I have been trying to find who sang this song. Fast forward over 30 years later, I'm listening to it. Finally, I know who the artist is . She did a good job . Thank you for uploading this video.
Ahh yes the sad thing is the reason songs get to be “hits” has little to do with how good they sound. Back when this came out I was a pop radio DJ. Nothing from this album was promoted to pop radio so we didn’t play her. I had a club mix show that ran on Saturday nights and I used to mix her other song “L.O.V.E.” and people seemed to like it, I got a few calls asking who it was. It was fun telling them it was Prince’s sister. So that’s the deal, lots of real great songs that never get heard by a large enough audience. Oh I had one song I like to think I was pivotal in making a hit record. The band was Silk and they had their first single “Happy Days.” The track was OK but as it climbed the charts I started getting calls for another song on the CD. “Hey man you need to check out cut 6 on that CD. I was young and stupid so one day I decided to play cut 6 without even listening to it first! (A real stupid move) The song was “Freak Me,” which was a better song. So every day instead of “Happy Days” I would play “Freak Me.” After about a week the record label called me and asked me to stop playing the song and play the song they wanted me to play. I did but the fire had been lit and in two weeks “Freak Me” was released and it was a bona fide smash hit. I know I probably wasn’t the only DJ in the country that played that song but I helped.
@@josebrown5961 Fantastic read. I must add that the Tyka track , I did hear played on a soul radio show in the UK, so I must mention Andy Peebles - he spun it at the time of its release in about 1988, on BBC Radio One - a national radio station. I still have the recording of that show on tape. Just checked how well Freak Me did in the UK and it peaked at 46, but what-a-choon! It was around in the charts in 93 and popped back into the top 75 again in 1994.
This is my taste in music. Even though it is 80s, I would listen to this today while relaxing cooking something healthy on a Sunday afternoon after church. This is timeless. Why is she singing to Marc Anthony?
I don’t know if she is singing this song for the Marc Anthony, he was just starting out when this album was being written. The name just fits the melody well. I could be wrong or I could just be being a “Marc Anthony hater,”that never got over him breaking up with Jennifer Lopez…🤣

Thanks for uploading this. I like this a lot. It looks like it hit the nr 33 in the billboard chart, but should have rached number one. Infortunatly is not so rare that a great song/voice doesn't get the credit its supposed to
@@jsamc Actually Prince DID need marketing. To be quite honest Prince was his own worst enemy when it comes to marketing. For folks like you and me Prince was special but back then things were different. An example I like to use is this. Michael Jackson released two albums in the early 80s, “Thriller,” and “Bad.” The first had 7 singles, and the second had 8. Prince in the same time had an album a year, even a double album. He also had a hit film Purple Rain. Then there’s The Time, Sheila E, Apollonia 6, and whoever else I may be forgetting. Prince wrote ALL that content, and played most of the instruments as well. As a Prince fan when this was happening I was in heaven! But now I’m an old man and have worked in the music biz. Knowing what I know now I would have hated my life if I were in charge of marketing him. The cost of reintroducing him to an audience every album, then having him dump all of that and come out with a new album that sounds nothing like the one that is still out…Again when I was a young listener (and radio DJ) I loved it. Remember 1999 had 5 hit singles, it was a double album and could have had more singles but they stopped promoting it to push the Purple Rain movie. The first single When Doves Cry, was a smash. It sounded nothing like anything that was on 1999. That album also had 4 more singles but they were quick because by the next year Around The World In A Day comes out and it sounds nothing like Purple Rain! Again me the fan was loving this, by then I was starting my radio career and my program director wasn’t feeling Prince because of all the changes. Prince and MJ were different kinds of artists. Tyka can actually sing! She has such a lovely voice. If only she was marketed like Prince she would've been as memorable as her brother.
Prince needed no marketing. He had hits.
Growing up she never realized Prince was a star.

She does sound kind of like her brother. Janet and MJ also sound alike. DNA...
Why was this song on the r&b and hip hop charts when it debuted? Why? It's not even a jam. Nothing about it is R&B or hip-hop
A lot of R&B sounded like this in 1988. This slick ultra-produced sound is like the "Urban Cowboy" phase that country music went through around 1981.
why was she singing about him, were they together at some point?
She is prince sister
a bit of diana ross breathy vocals?
