  • The Raid on the Medway, during the Second Anglo-Dutch War in June 1667, was a successful attack conducted by the Dutch navy on English warships laid up in the fleet anchorages off Chatham Dockyard and Gillingham in the county of Kent. At the time, the fortress of Upnor Castle and a barrier chain called the "Gillingham Line" were supposed to protect the English ships.

If I may say so, God bless the Dutch, we've had a few punch ups here and there but, really it was just sibling rivalry to us two, always there when we needed you against the French and Spaniards! Plus our beloved William of Orange come over here and defended our Constitutional Monarchy in 1688-90 in the wars against King James and he's fenians. God save the Dutch, one of our best allies and rivals we've had the honour of knowing nothing but deep respect for the Dutch 🇬🇧 🇳🇱

The theory I heard is that the orange dye would turn red in the sun & salt on the sea-going ships. Being penny-saving and smart business men, the merchants decided to use red-white-blue for their ship-flags instead of constantly buying new flags.
As merchant ships were among the primary places where the Dutch flag was used, that eventually just became the standard flag

It gets better: the chap that broke the chain ? Jan van Brakel ? He had a ship named after him that served in the Royal Netherlands Navy-in exile during WW2. On 14 December 1941, the ship was tasked with protecting the Chatham port area, and it accidentally hit and damaged one of the buoys protecting the harbour mouth.
Out went the signal to the navy station: "Van Brakel damages port defence Medway". Not even a minute later, a signal came back: "What ? Again ?"

This settled both Dutch succession (going to Friso, instead of to Prussia) and territorial disputes between the French and the Dutch.
