I wish they had given Aphelios voice lines. Like, sure he can't talk, but he can still speak in his mind. We, as the player, could hear them "talking" to each other in way of inner monologue. Right, now the champ should really just be called Alune & Aphelios' husk. Also, I think it would have been nice if some of the animations showed us Alune (the spirit form), like during their ult or maybe during an emote, where they'd be "talking" to one another. Just feels like they could have done more with this champ (these champs).

So we all agree that aphelios needs a color story where HE is the internal narrator at least.
Also i get the feeling aphelios sacrifice is higher than alunes but tbh one could argue alune is in solitary confinement and that is horrible too. They should also focus on the sacrifice they both make.

Imo the concept is well done, but Aphelios being mute only detracts from their relationship while not bringing anything to their story. It would be better to highlight how much Aphelios and Alune want to be together even when they have to be seperate. The relationship is too one sided when all Aphelios can do is just kill people, makes him look super psychopathic instead of a victim of loneliness.

Agreed. Aphelios feels so weird. He barely expresses himself at all so it feels more like we're along with Alune talking to an empty body.

So Aphelios (Alune), Leona, and Nami are all looking for Diana. Diana, what have u been doing? lol but this seems like it could be used to create a really great narrative for the Lunari and Solari (and Nami's people). I hope we get more progression in this "Hunt for Diana" story.
I wonder if she is running from fate. If the Lunari are going to become more powerful and bring the Solari down a notch, maybe she is supposed to kill her sister? It might explain why she lost or abandoned her weapon

Tbh I think that they should've saved Alune for another time, and she could've been a support. That way, we would have three Lunari champions and not just two. Besides, Alune herself looks pretty interesting and coud have perfectly been an individual champion.

As much as I would’ve wanted that as a support main I actually think that the concept of alune being a part of aphelios as a champion is a unique idea. Personally I don’t want too many bot lane champion pairs with the recent introduction of Senna. Agree that we need more Lunari (and even Solari) champions though.

Wait, why couldnt a story start with aphelios talking to himself and being looked at weirdly (ostracized as a perfect weapon( gaara)) then when he spots his target he drinks the poison and he can explain how much it hurts and then alune chimes in and we get her view.
Bonus points if we have another character or champion get to know aphelios before the poison but are surprised after he drinks the poison.
so we end up having aphelios, alune, and a 3rd person view on the character as a whole.

I think Aphelio's is supposed to be a weapon only. He has given up everything to become a totally focused weapon for the moon and nothing else. Top that with the nonstop constant pain, i can understand why he isnt exactly the most emotive character.

the flower doesnt just mute him .It's completely husked when he has the flower within him. Alune is puppeteering aphelios, and aphelios is responding by acting on instict, from all the years on training only to murder. I think it was really important to explain the emotional and physical status of aphelios, because he probably doesnt remember much of what happens. Alune sees for him , send him the weapons in the right position for him to react and posibly continues to kill with it as long as someone is making a noise or a sudden move.
I wanted this guy to have more depth, but yea, alune got the spotlight. Is frustrating

Why does Aphelios get top billing? He's basically phoning in his performance and relying on his sister to handle everything while he takes the credit.

but actually, alune sends him weapons and gives him emotional support
he's responding and fighting with his instinct (he trained so much that even numb can do this, it's not alune)
I'm disappointed that it's not Aphelios and Alune. They are actually pretty critical to each other. Nunu and Willump and Kindred (lamb and wolf under 1 name) both have names based on their duo and these two deserve it too.
I do wish you’d’ve taken him into practice tool to really feel his animations.
All the animations between swapping weapons, auto attacking, idling, hasting & using abilities are just so wonderfully done.
It makes playing the character feel so satisfying.
Also, although he isn’t very expressive, he does make some sounds. Sometimes he will make this very deep huffing, as if he’s really trying to concentrate through the pain. When you take damage, sometimes he will do a prolonged, very pained huffing & grunting, & the voice actor for him really sells the character’s feeling.
Another nice thing is when you are 1/3 HP, Alune will say very sombrely ‘Phel, you’re hurt’. The voice acting & animation really tell a lot about the characters.
On a sadder note, in different languages Alune’s voice actress changes while Aphelios’ remains the same, indicating we will probably never get any speaking lines from him.
14:40 sums up all my problems with kindred's gameplay , kindred are both lamb and wolf , but gameplay wise the wolf is represented as just a side character , sure the design does not focus only on the lamb , but with their lore being the most interesting to me for 2 reasons , them being the mystery of death itself and the contrast between wolf and lamb , its really sad knowing the gameplay being so focused on lamb that ppl not knowing the lore think kindred is just the lamb

I have a huge problem with Aphelios's color story though. Just like you.
We didn't got any insight into his personality. I still don't know ANYTHING about his thoughts and feelings. I also wanted to see how he interacts with his sister. They can talk in their minds right? Alune could have asked: "How's the sky today?" To tell us that she is isolated. Aphelios could have wanted Alune to sing to him so he wouldn't feel alone, since he has that in his champion theme. Instead what we got was... he just murders everyone for his faith. Yeey.

aphelios asks alune to sing for him so he doesnt feel alone, Alune starts singing and you can see flashbacks of their childhood and training (so we can know how they interact and know them as individuals)

And because you're you, and you are able to make this sort of thing entertaining, top 10 smear frames of 2019.
The most frustrating thing to me personally is that there is that there are other videogame examples such as Undertale, Chrono Trigger, Deltarune and OMORI where a character is silent or mute but actually do a better job at displaying their personality and relationship with other characters in non-verbal ways. Sometimes it's little details about them: trinkets they carry, how they react to certain things or people or body language that hint at a deeper personality and sometimes they outright imply the character is talking even if we don't hear them doing so.
The latter could have been done really easily with Aphelios, maybe his connection to Alune allows him to telepathically speak to his sister but only we can hear her respond and react to whatever he's saying all while keeping Aphelios a taciturn, stoic and alluringly mysterious pretty boy.
Maybe Aphelios, after he does his duty lets out a small , but sincere smile, and then us hearing Alune being a bit exhasperated at her brother making such a terrible pun but ultimately grateful to see him smiling and telling jokes again despite all they've been going through.
Ok so this is pretty unrelated to the subject, but "alune" (if you pronounce the "e" at the end like "eh") means "peanuts" in my language.
I realised that when I was telling my friend about the new champ, and she gave me this look, like "This is seriously how they named their champion?" and I was like "Oh shit, her name is "peanuts" !".

Aphelios & Alune, Uldren & Mara, Tyreen & Troy..... i think the "light-haired powerful girl child and dark-haired boy child who would die for his sister twin duo" is becoming a weirdly common video game trope

Aphelios and Alune could have been one of the fun bot lane duos like Xayah and Rakan or Lucian and Senna. I think it would give an opportunity for the devs to include how they have to be together but also apart. Alune could be an enchanter have different abilities that make her allies deal increased damage or have bigger attack speed, in a way that the damage she can deal isn't really great but she can help her allies out a ton. Her ult could work similarly to the Mordekaiser one possibly? Transporting an ally and an enemy to the moon temple where the ally can finish off the enemy.
This would have worked excellently for a visual media where he would have communicated emotions to the audience through physical manners and facial expressions. Like this, he really is nothing as if he isn't even there.

As someone who only knows League of Legends lore through your videos (and as someone who isn’t deaf/hard of hearing, so grain of salt on representation and all), the fact that Aphelios can’t speak could be interesting if he communicated to Alune through some sort of sign language. It would lead to an interesting contrast between in combat, when his hands are literally full, and out of combat, when he can communicate again.

Well, it could be, but I don't think "in over his head" is really Aphelios' vibe. More like tragic resignation to a life of murderous hypercompetence. He's presented as an extremely GOOD assassin, not someone put into a role he can't fill.

There are 2 things I dont like at all about Aphelios.
The first, is the fact that he is mute, Riot FINALLY decides to create a proper

fourth twink, but they just had to ruin him by making her sister do all the talking, what a turn off.
And second, his weapons, he is from targon, where people have swords, spears, maces... and then he have "magical" guns that look likes science fiction. Like... what?

Honestly though, Aphelios being mute is no excuse for being under characterized. Especially not in a written story, which is the easiest medium for an internal monologue. People who can't use their voice tend to be MORE expressive, not less, and this is animation which would give them even more freedom. If the carpet from Aladdin can communicate without a voice or a face, I don't see why lacking dialogue should stop Aphelios from having personality.

Just a small correction here. You seem to be mistaking being Non-Binary with androgyny. Non-Binary does NOT mean being a blurred line between male and female presenting. It’s a gender identity and doesn’t have a specific “look”.

Another thing I find adds value to Aphelios' blazer thing, and general colour scheme, is it's colored with more magical colours, matching Alune, while the clothes under them are darker, almost more subdued or plain (other than the gold) . This helps visually imply his main power is something added on, given by her, instead of something innate to him.

It might be just me, but I think Aphelios' anatomy is absolutely broken going by normal proportions. This mans has a damn swan's neck! And unless his clothes are absolutely ridiculously overblown, his shoulders are absolutely massive compared to the rest of his statue. Judging by angles and whatnot, his shoulders should either be slanted downwards at a roughly 20-30° angle, or they are so incredibly wide that it just straight up breaks his proportions. Not necessarily a negative, just an interesting point, that you could maybe go over as well? So far we've had a video covering broken female anatomy in League of Legends splash arts, but now we have a very good case of a male's anatomy just being...weird.
Skyen did point out it gives the effect of a small figure in a really large coat, which implies power without the character being muscular or broad

I disliked how excessively stereotypical the two siblings were coded re: their genders. Aphelios is born under the physical moon so he's physically stronger and faster, while Alune is born under the spiritual moon so she gets magic and spirituality. Then after their big defining story moment, Alune is removed from physical combat, becoming the magical girl support that talks and emotes while Aphelios becomes the stoic, pained, silent, emotionless protagonist that does all the cool physical stuff. I have seen this so many times before that I'm just tired. I never liked it and I genuinely don't think I ever will, regardless of how well it's done (and tbh I don't think it's well done in League at all). I appreciate you covering their lore and design though!
The dynamic of one person doing physical stuff and one person doing mental/spiritual stuff isn't something I'm sick of; it's a good way to make it clear that neither character could succeed on their own without needing to spend lots of time detailing their specific roles and how they interact *or* just rely on some supernatural BS. But the roles have a lot of baggage associated with them, from gender to personality, and I wish more such pairs would bother to break the mold.
@@timothymclean The issue isn't really person A doing physical stuff and person B supporting them, it's the gender coding. Once you start paying attention you start seeing it everywhere. Think of how many action movies or videogames have a male protagonist doing all the physical stuff with a female voice giving them information and sometimes doing whatever the plot needs to advance (like hacking stuff, opening doors remotely, disabling security, creating a distraction, guiding him, etc.). And in the rare cases where the genders are reversed, the male support tends to take on a more "authoritative" tone or a snarky comic relief, due to the toxic masculinity view that him being professional and unaggressively helpful is somehow emasculating. It's just tiresome.

Honestly? The two feel very neutral in both fields of expressiveness in terms of their 'relationship'. At least on an analysis of their core parts. Phel is only the executor when Alune grants him the power, therefore making her the cause to Phel's 'effect'. I get what you're saying about the gender coding, but I think this interpretation is just a little more muddied in the roles compared to the straight 1:1 of that trope that we've seen.
On that note, Kindred 'KIND OF' circumvents this in-game where Lamb, the female half is the one you primarily control rivaling Wolf who acts like a controllable pet. In lore though, they're two halves of the same whole, and have near equal parts in their relationship, though it does seem as though Lamb is the dominant partner.

You know, I will probably never learn to play Aphelios because I just don't find the role of ADC all that fun, and when I do need to play an ADC Jhin and rat boy fill that niche just fine for me, but the more I see of Aphelios the less I tend to dislike him. Anime is not my thing and I really don't like the crystal weapons and imagery that looks like it's straight out of Halo, but you're right in that he is not something we actually had in the game before. He is as far from my cup of tea as it gets, but it's not a bad design, and I'm sure lots of people will enjoy him. It's like an opposite of Qiyana for me, who I think actually has a fun skillset, but I find her completely unlikable, both from the perspective of lore and her visual design.

What do you even mean, there exists plenty of concept art of Alunes physical form which makes it easier to look at all of her features than it is in this splash and the art you edited in. It's on the Nexus post about Aphelios' development.

i think they did it right by focusing on aphelios when it comes to gameplay. alune is not actually physically there, as the story says - she's just giving him his abilities. so there is no need for her to be a part of the actual gameplay.

I think you missed the mark on aphelios. I think a big part of their story of their story is an allegory on sexism and how a society's expectations can be toxic to both men and women. Alune despite being one of the most powerful people in lunari society essentialy runs away because fighting is "for men" and women are supposed to be sequestered away because they are "too fragile" for combat. On Aphelios' side is how he is expected to be stoic and unfeeling and how it literally hurts him with the plant he consumes. They two sides of sexuality and how both sexes can be hurt through societal expectations.
i really hate how every new champion now really LOOKS complicated (but really isnt) and has insane powercreep because they all have 21325125 passive abilities on them. This is not good champ design imo.
