    Humble thoughts from an owner:
I have owned one since April. The new engine feels MUCH more powerful than the previous model. I've ridden a 2016 and a 2019 AdvSports and the difference is massive. I'll grant it's not 150hp and it shows but I don't find myself really missing that power, and I've taken heavily laden long-distance trips on it.
I'm somewhat taken aback by how anti-tech this review is. The tech is no big deal and I encourage everyone considering a purchase to go look at one and try it before you buy into naysaying. I switch through the modes very regularly, and often ride in my own custom User mode most of the time (engine behaviour of Tour, suspension of Urban). I feel like it's *possible* the reviewers here looked at the buttons once, didn't immediately get it, and disregarded it. I understand that completely; that's what "intuitive design" is all about. But if you are motivated to actually try it's not bad. I use the entire array of controls and control CarPlay with Hippo Hands on now. And once you REALLY experience that electronic suspension's capability (especially in Off Road mode), you're sold. :D
If your CarPlay isn't working it MAY be you have an old headset. CarPlay requires a connected headset and I'm pretty sure the bike uses a modern/recent Bluetooth chipset. Older headsets (like my old Sena 10) may struggle a bit (mine did). I switched to a newer Cardo Packtalk BOLD and everything is perfect.
Off-road, I think some reviews tend to forget that *all* ADV bikes are compromises. They'll never be as savvy on the street as a hardcore streetbike, nor as graceful in the dirt as a dedicated dirt machine like a CRF450. But I've taken my AT:AS into some NASTY places (including a MX track) and it handles remarkably. You have to treat it like a big bike, sure, but it's solid and capable if you're willing.
Regarding standing, those handlebars are REALLY set at street height from the factory. At the very least, rock them upward a few millimeters (be careful, the tolerance is tight). The difference when standing will amaze you. I put 20mm risers on mine, but I'm pretty tall (6'4").
Get the factory tires off of it immediately, though. Those so-called "90-10s" it ships with are rugged-looking street tires, nothing more. Put some Mitas e07s on it and go hit a green lane. I'll wait. :)
As a tall rider I invested in the taller seat (like the one that came stock on the '19 AdvSports) and I have no issue with the screen height. That said, I have a summer time "shorty" screen, but that's more about getting air into my helmet when it's 36C outside. The existing screen, though I can see over it at my height, cuts enough wind that my helmet becomes a sauna in the summer. Seek ye the aftermarket. I did put the stock one back on once November hit, though.
Thank you very much for the review! It was awesome to hear other opinions about the bike!

Great stuff Zak, I think the overall message from us, you and others who’ve had a decent time in the saddle of a new AT is that there are so many riders with different ideals and the Honda provides a tremendous base for buyers to tweak and adjust to suit them.
      Cheers, Michael

The fact of the matter is every other manufacturer has a left hand switchgear with likely less than half as many buttons to control the same amount of tech.

Well done Zac! I agree with so many of your points. Put the fifteen minutes of critical thinking into the electronics package and you are of to a great start and just grow from there. Might be a bit of a struggle at first compared to other control systems out there, but they are incredibly benificial for your various riding terrains you encounter. I have a Pac Talk also and it works well for the Bluetooth functions I can utilize ( Android) with the bike. If there is one bitch I have, is why Android is not compatible with this bike?! Our CR-V has both and works wonderful. What the hell Honda! I find this bike extremely comfortable to. I'm 6'2 and can ride 8-10 hours and feel great at 53. That's saying something! Keep on smiling Zac, I love my ATAS-es and can't wait for these Rockie mountains to shed their snow :-) Just putting on some EO7's this month, in prep of spring. Best of luck to you in 2021 eh, have fun :-) 🇨🇦

I had over the years a Ktm 990 (Quebec to Mexico ++), a Multistrada, a Stelvio, a FJ09, GS1100, GS1200 and then a 2017 Africa Twin DTC. For me it is uncommon to buy the same bike twice... and now I have a 2020 AT Adventure DTC. It is just the best all around motorcycle. Suspension is just perfect, smooth engine and love the electronics ! People should invest half of the time they complain in reading their manual....

You keep hearing him say “when it did work”. There haven’t been even one time that it didn’t work with me. I just get on the bike and connect the cable, that’s it. Even the music starts playing automatically from where you left it the day before. Also you can make all the major adjustments by the touch screen in seconds if you are not used to the buttons. Maybe the thing with me is that I took the time and read the manual. Because this is my bike and I’m not riding it just for 500 miles.

I love the engine on the ninja, just wish it had some more low end or even linear torque. Will be riding a lot of two up as well. I was looking at the three models above. Honda AT ES, 1290 SAS, or R1200GS (not the 1250 - potential good deal on really low mileage 2014)

Never had a problem with mine. I've done a big tour of the alps and fun trips around the peak district. 6000 miles in and its been a pleasure. The electronics are really easy if you spend the time reading the manual and using hondas online simulator its really not rocket science. The screens not an issue just swop it for the many after market ones available. I've had GS's and other beemers and been plagued by reliability issues on every one, never again will I have anything BMW (Sorry TMF). Apple play has been faultless on mine its fab. Power wise lets face who can actually use 160 bhp? 100bhp is plenty for anyone on the road and the ATAS has plenty of grunt to bring a smile to your face. The semi active suspension is sublime making it a comfy ride and it switches at the press of a button (you just need to know which button, read the manual). Mines the manual version I'm not a fan of dct I want to think and decide what I want when I want, not when the computer says so but I see the attraction for some. Absolutely stunning bike, comfy, big tank range, loads of fun, reliable and the best thing about it? Its not a GS.

Hayabusa is more engaging to ride ( never going off road) but AT fuel consumption , DCT & touchscreen are ace. But I’m a skeptic about the vibes of the engine for long distance running.

I traded my 16 Africa Twin for an 1100 base model in Feb last year and couldn't be happier, it took half an hour in the garage to get around the switchgear no problem. As an Android user I have a snotty old iPhone for the bike that never fails to run carplay when I need it, if your phone fails to connect I would suggest its a problem with the phone not the bike. I'm a happy owner of a KTM 1290 SA-S after trying the GS1250 and the Multistrada Enduro when I started looking for an adventure bike (no off road intended, just the ergo and the comfort 2 up).
Though the KTM truly is a fantastic bike I look at the AT I come across with a kind of envy, probably because of its history: just seeing the color reminds me of the NXR750 and the Dakar when I was a kid. No other new motorcycle does that to me.

      @corentinalpha4784 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@MrKram1337 Hi, Please note I am French and not a native English speaker so in addition to being long my post won’t be perfect...
I came to the KTM after telling myself that I was buying my last non electric motorcycle, after having owned a 796 Hypermotard and an R9T Scrambler.
I tested several bikes in the last years but still remember perfectly my first roadtest of the KTM. Memorable😊. I burst out laughing after teleporting in front of a car and feeling absolutely safe on a small country road with the KTM.🤣
Here is my test experience in this big trail category:
-When I wanted to change my Ducati, I naturally tested the Multistrada 1260 Enduro (with the V2). It seemed to “sanitized” after my Hypermotard. I also tested a Versys (real comfort and efficiency) and the previous V Strom 1000 (great value for money, nice engine) but no passion. I then tested for a few days a S1000xr. Oddly it seemed bland to me when driving (impression of having nothing under 8000 rpm, then the bike get crazy especially with the quickshifter: don’t get fooled by the shape, it is a sportbike with added comfort). I fortuitously tested the R9T Scrambler when bringing back the S1000XR and “fell in love at first sight” (pure sensation of driving a bike, full of character) but forgot 2-up for few years: it cannot take a passenger except a kid.
-After 2 years of passion with this BMW, I missed road trips with my wife. So I tried the 1250 gs, which is great but in my opinion too expensive (in any case I am not ready to pay that price in a properly equipped motorcycle... €24k ouch).
-Then I tried a Superadventure S. And truth be said it is in fact in another dimension. It grows to 2500 like my previous R9T at half speed, it gets stronger without giving the impression of being too linear and then after 7000 it flies away. Impossible, with my level of driving in any case, to open the accelerator wide before being in 4th, or you save your front tire use (that can be a choice, after all🤫). The most impressive thing after the engine is the agility despite the 19 'in front (maybe because it's just a 170 behind) and the feeling of lightness. The chassis does not flinch, the suspension controlled in Sport mode is top because "normal": it plunges when you brake (in Comfort it brakes flat as with the telelever), you can “read” the road normally.
I had this bike for 1 year now. Done “only” 12 000 km, thanks to regular lockdowns... I still love this bike and use it as often as I can. Just the noise of the LC8 1301 is mental😍. Then you accelerate and laugh. In fact you have to reconfigure your mental driving software to always think about what is happening not 10 or 15 seconds but 30 seconds in front of you. It is that good 😅. Oh, by the way, my wife loves it too (got the KTM parts top case).
      Only 2 caveat:
-You have to be confident with high and relatively heavy bikes (I am 178 cm with a 33 inch inseam and fine on it). But it is the same on the GS and the Multistrada.
-And putting everyday the battery on charger (optimate 5 was my pick) will get you definitely rid of electronic gizmos like “suspension error” that exists only in the software mind and not in real life 😩. My best addition to the bike after the crash bars.
Try a GS, it is a "business class" bike. No wonders it has so much success. Then try the KTM: it is like you're upgraded to "first class".

All motorcycles dealer customer support could be much better. Having someone knowledgeable to setup your bike as a base setup, levers etc. An introduction to the electronics by the dealer and some training TH-cam videos by some pro riders etc would make the customer experience the difference between brand choice, not to forget a decent warranty.

Great review! I always look forward to your videos, so thanks for all your work in their production.
When I moved to France from the US, I had to sell my beloved 2011 R1200GS Adventure (as well as a magic Moto Guzzi V11) since import hassles to bring them were too much, so after moving I decided on the exact same 2020 Africa Twin Adv Sports that you fellows have-ES, manual transmission. It took me a few weeks of riding to really begin to appreciate the Honda, given my long-term previous relationship to the GSA, but I became a solid convert. The Honda just exudes quality and craftsmanship, and thanks to the better efficiency of the chain drive versus shaft on the BMW, the Honda’s torque positively rocket launches the bike on low-end acceleration, and the 100 HP seems quite enough at the top end, at least for me. The seat, though less padded than the BMW, is surprisingly more comfortable on long hauls, with none of the truly painful hot spots and “monkey butt” that nothing I tried could alleviate. On the Honda, no pressure points at all.
One huge benefit was that a similarly equipped GSA would have cost me 5000€ more than the Africa Twin, and service, parts, and maintenance costs on BMWs have-to me-always been ridiculous, with the added hassle of a sparser dealer network. I still love BMW’s GSA with that distinct boxer tractor vibe, and in their latest guise they are beautiful in my eyes, but for me now (I’m almost 70) the Honda ATAS is my perfect match. It really inspires me every time I swing my leg over. And even at my age, I figured out the switchgear with not too much stress. The two custom modes really let you makes it your bike exactly as you desire, and it’s quite nice to toggle into a custom city mode when crawling through traffic, and then switch into hell hound mode back in the twisties.

    > "if you want to off road buy off road bikes"
The thing is, you need to travel to off road places first and it isn't very pleasant experience to ride an off road bikes on the motorway travel miles and hours to hit somewhere nice in wales and start your off road journey. especially most of those "off road" bikes has an service interval of 20 hours, and the engine has to be rebuilt in 200 hours, with an high speed motorway riding you are looking at far smaller service internval. They aren't bulit for travel.
I know you then gonna argue that we can buy a van and load that off road bike up into the van, but then you have one more thing to buy, one more thing to be insured, one more thing to take care of, not only that gonna cost your more money but also more of your time.
And the worst part of it is that you gonna sit in the bloody van for hours to get to the places, firstly that doesn't sound like a motorcycing holiday because you were supposed to be riding not driving. Secondly, everytime you finish with your off road journey you have to go all the way back to the place where you parked your van and load it into the van when you were already totally wasted!
Also many of us really like the idea of using the minimalist transportation to go around the world, to see the world, an adventure bike fits this ideology very well. 2-wheel with a soft pannier, it eats all terrians, easy and simple, cheap and unsophisicated, isn't that great idea?
But in order to have the ball and skills to do so you first need to ride your big bike to the nearest off road places for execises and practises, sometime for fun as well, and that's why we take adv off road, ride it to acquire the fun and skills we need, and then to go further.
Apart from above all, I can only afford 2 bikes, many out there can afford only 1 bike, if you can only buy one and you still want to do some non-competition off roading and overlanding, adventure bike is the perfect one.

Great review fella's :-) I have this bike in DCT fashion and have grown to love it. 9000 km's throughout BC Canada, and have about an 80% fluid grasp of electronics package. Definitely not intuitive! Muscle memory and continuous use brings comfort. I put two track, forestry road, and many many highway miles on it, and absolutely loved the electronic suspension! The suspension was the largest surprise for me. I also tab through, urban, touring, off road, and sport(s) modes often, for these distinct riding pleasures. I've never had a DCT trans before, and it took some time to change my riding style to it's engineering ability. But wouldn't change back now for a bike like this. Traffic, comfort, slow speed. Many advantages. I'm a 6'2 and 220 heavy Canuck :-) Fortunately with seat tall, and windshield low, my sight of eye is wonderful with great wind protection. With full Klim gear, nothing stopped me. Bike is heavy with panniers loaded, seat bag, crash bars, center stand ect, but once rolling you don't seem to be bothered by it. Don't know if I'd ever single track it? We have a Z06, Boss 302, mountain sleds, RZR, quads, and mx bikes. This is my favorite toy! With 24" of snow in my yard, I'm just counting days for spring :-) P.S. I'm a Honda junkie anyway so I may be jaded, lol. Thanks for you great discussion on this ATAS guys, happy new year, and stay safe eh 🇨🇦

I can only speak as I've found and through my experience bmw's are unreliable. I think the biggest reason for the gs being popular is down to ewan & charlie nothing to do with german engineering. All the best

I find all the tech far more complicated than it needs to be, apple CarPlay is useless if you have andoid, like most people, there is no storage for essentials like puncture repair kit, I move the tool kit from its silly location by the battery to under the seat, why isn't there a topographical GPS map/satellite image and navigation system on that screen, why does it not come standard with a centre stand, plus crash bars as an option, more power would be nice for on road use

  • @richardkeeley6927

I love my 2023 ATAS manual with all its tech. I added the off-road dongle which turns off TC, Wheelie control, and rear abs by pressing the star switch once. That's it. Now the ATAS is perfect. The bike has enough power for my needs and it's great for both off and on the road, and touring.

Oh come on, the AT is a great off-road bike. However, it's not a rally, dirt, or enduro bike. There are sub-categories relating to off-road bikes. I ride my plenty over dirt tracks and roads. It's pretty obvious that some contributors are nitpicking issues.

The big problem with all the tech on bikes is that the manufacturers have built in the features that journalists and bike testers have asked for and have written about in magazines and the Internet. It is the same for power: how many times have I read that the Yamaha MT10 is inferior or out-dated compared to a Super Duke or R1000R or any other bike putting out 160+ bhp. Get real, you are not living in the real World! All I will say is beware of what you wish for!

interesting reading the comments and hearing your opinions in the videos on honda ATAS 1100, i currently own a Kawasaki Versys 650, had a Honda CB125F before, my current versys puts out 120hp from what i know and im looking at the ATAS DCT 2021 knowing its only got 100hp, im more than happy to accept 20hp downgrade for the plus side of better protects being wind wise and off road wise, gravel roads, off the beaten track etc and after an RTA in 2019 plus i use my motorcycle for commuting DCT will be a better benefit. i can agree with the statements of "who actually needs more than 100hp in a motorcycle" but again that depends on your style of riding

I loved mine had it for a short while. The dash started turning off randomly like a reboot error and it was going In for a fix. Next thing I added the adventure light kit and sometimes they wouldn't turn on. Again randomly on every start up. In the end I sold it and have a 2021 bmw bumblebee adventure on order. I love Honda but after this and my 2020 fireblade rr-r issues I don't think I'll be back to Honda again. I got a letter from Honda asking me for details after I emailed about it. Never heard back. 2 months ago. Shocking bad customer service.

Interesting review, it's not a bike I'd consider at the moment but almost feel that I'm their target market; chap 40's loves long trips but found the niggles an interesting conversation, I've had a 2013 K1300S did 25k, a 2015 Versys 1000 again did about 25k and a 2017 R1200RS and did nearly 40k. All the bikes were very easy to use and it just strikes me that the Africa Twin to get the most out of it isn't that easy. Moreover, all the bikes I've had in the last seven years have had more power and a bit more fun factor. It's between a Multistrada and another BMW for me.

Surprisingly little mention of the 21" front wheel and the corresponding effects on road handling and cornering. Other reviewers will usually think enough of it to mention in the conclusions. Does this mean it's a non issue? Some even say it results in a loss of cornering feel, numbness, vagueness, more frequent need for corrections? Maybe others can chime in?

I had a 16 model and did no off road on it at all, except for the adventure centre course which it excelled at. I never gelled with it. The standard tyres are dog shit. I got a puncture on it and the tubed tyres are a royal pain in the ass.
If I got cut up in traffic I ended up indicating at them instead. I really liked the Dakar styling of it, but in the end I went back to a 2012 twin cam gs. The gs is just the better option if you like adventure bikes.

I have a 2015 VFR1200X Crosstourer DCT. I would love an Africa Twin 1100 but for many reasons I won't trade. I do a lot of European trips (when allowed). Modes don't appeal to me (apart from possibly a rain mode and cornering ABS). I won't trade a shaft drive for a chain, why would you? You can still get a 'new' Crosstourer fully kitted for around £13,000. Downside, it's heavier and taller but you can make adjustments to mitigate that. Finally the V4 engine is the sweetest unit.

For me Tour mode in sport 1 ticks my box, the indicator button is a pain but overall the bike is comfortable and more than enough power for me my days of gooning around have gone, I want reliability, good looks and a enjoyable ride ...

i am looking to buy either this , the KTM , the GS 1250 and the tiger but i have to say in this review it has to be taken into account the character difference in Luke as apposed to Steves character, Luke comes across as a competitive personality which can affect a review of a particular Bike if he has his OWN IDEA of what he likes over what is BEST ??
Steves comments i found were much more un bias , no offence intended , its just personalities .
there was a definite edge to the comments from Luke.

Enjoyed this very much chaps. Agree with Steve on just about all of his points, spot on. I've had the Africa Twin (2017 tricolour DCT tour package) and wasn't too keen on the DCT for road for me and isn't as good as DCT is on the Goldwing and that type of bike where it makes much more sense. I have the BMW 1250 Rallye and I can't even think of the two (africa Twin) in the same way, the Beemer is a different class. Not necessarily better, I don't mean that. They just feel completely different and not even related, although they are both in the adventure market. The 1250 engine though is stunning in every way on the road for me. I have, for my work also a; Yamaha super tenere XT1200ZE and it covers all the "bases" I need of it in my work better than the AT the yamaha is such an under rated bike in this class and thoroughly reliable and better power, or at least how it feels. Anyway all the best great review.

I had a 16 plate DCT. Loved the engine, looks and engineering integrity of the bike BUT ended up trading it in for a used GS (how predictable?) for 2 reasons; top heavy weight (dropped it twice manoeuvring in the garage!) and vague handling on a good lean caused by the 21" front wheel.
I would have kept the bike had the option of more road focused rubber.

I really like (I will not say love...haha Luke) the three different perspectives on the Africa Twin. We all use our bikes differently and the three of you brought your own opinions and experiences riding the Twin over twelve months. I am thinking about making the change from a very reliable and comfortable ST1300 to an adventure bike. It was very interesting and educational to hear how differently the bike met each riders expectations and needs. I always appreciate when reviewers give their height and wait so you know how the ergonomics of the handlebars, foot pegs, riding positions and wind screens might affect you. Great job guys. The people who gave thumbs down reviews just don't respect other peoples opinions for what they are. Keep up the great work and looking forward to the following the podcast.
