Just want to say a big thanks to all that have shared their opinions on this. I was unsure what sort of reaction i'd get, so i'm glad the majority of you would've made the same move regarding the issue, giving me peace of mind that I was in the right. Thanks for your continued support!
That's rough on the football boots return. 20 year old boots carry high risk on selling - you'll get a much higher price as they're highly sought after, but they have to be sold as collectables only with clear warnings to wear at your own risk. Even then, the issue with selling such items on eBay is that if the buyer ignores that and wears them and they break then eBay won't care what you wrote in the listing, and will still make you liable for the refund. Whereas specialist websites that sell classic football boots will actually advise they can't refund or replace boots older than 5 years old that are damaged through wear or use due to their age.
Yeah, that’s it exactly, even if I mentioned they were collectors boots, they would still be able to get their refund. Good shout on selling through other dedicated websites for these, maybe I’ll do that in the future. Thanks 😊
Mark items with a UV pen Only a little dot in a place that’s not seen unless you look for it, so upon return you can check and then you know if it’s yours or not :) I mark all items over £50
Refund, forget about it. Move on. All you really lost was the purchase price and shipping and you got a video idea out of it. Refunds happen, build the possibility for them into your business plan. Never let it ruin your day, not worth it. When I have to refund I always straight away try and list something of the same value. Just makes me feel better that the money will hopefully be coming in again soon.
Thanks! And yes very true, maybe the video will go viral and pay for the losses 😅 I always expect things like this to happen, felt a lot better just getting the refund sent and being done with it, knowing the buyer was partially satisfied.
That is a shame about the boots but I think you did the right thing and checked as much as you could the legitimacy of his story and judging by his comments it was a genuine return. It is sorted, you have got positive feedback, and it is part of the joys of reselling on eBay as you say. Lots of nice sales soften the blow though.😊
Thanks again Sarah, yeah did all I can to keep the buyer happy. Sometimes best to just get it sorted there & then and let it be in the past. Glad you’re enjoying the sale updates, more to come hopefully 😊
You did the right thing. You made the return easy. But with your accounts that would be an inventory write off. So you will gain in the losses from the financial year. Log all your losses and you will pay less tax. Keep all your returns slips and invoice of selling to prove it. It’s the customers purchase price not your buying price that will be the accounting losses.
Same thing happened to me once with some horse boots that had been in the wardrobe for years. It’s something to do with the glue but I can’t remember the actual term for it now
Hi, I've been watching your channel for a few months and really enjoying your honest and informative content. You appear to sell a lot of trainers. Do you always put a best offer on your listings? What in your experience is the best strategy to get a good turnover of stock but to still get decent prices? I have been reading on Ebay forums for months about sellers complaining about very low sales, why do you think you are doing well in the current financial climate? Thanks
Thanks for watching, yep only sourcing/selling trainers & shoes currently. Best offer comes in to play after about a week of it being listed & unsold. Low sales are usually due to poor pricing, pictures, descriptions etc… one of the main things people do is fill their shops up with stuff people don’t actually want, so it sits for a while. Find the items that sell fast, then you’ll see an increase of sales. I currently only sit at 200 listed. But sell around 150-200 monthly. I’m seeing more sales now than I was at 350 listed everything random items. To answer the last question, shoe sales are going well because people currently struggle to afford brand new shoes, so go to sites such as eBay to buy as good as new but at a fraction of the cost. Hope this helps 😊
Wow! Some great insight and tips there, thanks. Out of interest, I've noticed on your video's that when you go to car boot sales you take the slow and steady approach, looking at each table and buying as you go. Any thoughts on which style you think is most effective?, as I think you go to a lot more and more regularly than me. Keep up with the great content!
Shoes that are old will just fall to pieces when used, even if they're in a good state, because just thats what shoes do after a while. Maybe add a disclaimer that old shoes may fall to pieces if used and should be a collectors purchase.
Agree James. Annoying and sceptical that they were an identical old pair of his. But not worth the hassle. I have someone saying the parcel has been delivered but cant find it. He is asking for refund. Yodel say delivered. 🤔
If it’s marked as delivered, don’t refund, you’re in the clear. These were 100% my boots, with the additional pictures he sent, I could confirm this, so was happy to refund.
I had exactly the same with a pair of vintage Dr martens sandals.. The soles literally disintegrated. It's frustrating but just apologised, refunded and told the buyer not not bother returning!! Everyone who Resells has gotta take a hit sometimes and feel it's more important with how you react when things don't go to plan or a mistake is made. 👍
Another great video! The shoes sales are still the best part of the video for me anyway its good to see that you show all your sales even the small ones as being a reseller you don’t always make big sales everyday! Shame on the 90s tho ive had that happen to me before playing football 😂
Thanks mate, yeah I like to share it all if I can. Including the junk stock I’m clearing out. Little by little the box space is freeing up ready for the boot sales! 🙌🏼
My wife is a qualified financial advisor. One of the things she taught me was that you didn't lose £100. You lost the value of the item plus postage. Its related to the sunk cost fallacy. When a £140 went badly it kept my head in the game.
For the older trainers, you should write “probably best to have them for show due to age of the trainers” that way you’ve covered your back. I collect trainers and wouldn’t ever wear any of the OGs. The soles won’t last 5 minutes. A lot of trainers you can put in a box in the loft and after so long you open the box and they just crumble as soon as you pick them up
Fairplay to you for accepting the refund, not sure I would have given a full refund... They were 20 years old! More for a collector. can you claim on Vinted? Suppose its only £7
I would have either had him return them and then had to refund either way, or just be done with it and get the refund sent right away. No way round it as a business account, unfortunately. But yeah, really only lost out on the buy price & postage 👍🏼
You would of had no choice but to give the full refund regardless, the only difference is if you decided not to you’d end up with a defect and most likely negative feedback
This is very strange - I have had exactly this same thing happen to me this morning with a pair of football boots. The buyer has messaged me to say that they lasted less than 30 minutes (all the blades/studs have cracked and come off) and they have requested a return. I've been unsure what to do as 1.they were as new when I sent them. 2. as you said, it seems pointless having them returned. I'm guessing that I'm going to have to refund them also...
I had a similar problem with my own walking shoes. I'd had them years, didn't use them for a couple of years and then the next time I used them the soles and supports literally crumbled as I walked. Only lasted about 20 metres before it happened. There was no evidence looking at them as I put them on, and I know they'd been looked after and stored in my shoe cupboard. I guess perishing just happens 😢
Just keep listing, good pictures, main thing as mentioned in my previous video is the pricing. Price it for what they sell for and people will see/buy your items 👍🏼
Depends on the state of the shoe. Usually it’s a full on in/out scrub. If the soles come out, then they get cleaned separately as well as the laces. Thanks 😊
I sold a pair of boots clearly listed as a collectors item & not suitable for use & they used and they split..... I did very begrudgingly give a refund.
Great vid. Not criticising your decision at all, but we always only operate a ‘return for refund’ only policy. If we have even a 0.01% suspicion that someone might be trying it on, we want them back for inspection. The photos wouldn’t be clear enough evidence for me. £4 return postage to find out is always worth it IMO.
Thanks! The pictures I showed in the video were just a select few from the 10 or so he sent. There were slight imperfections that matched my boots in the listing 100%. So to avoid a negative, give an overall positive outcome for the buyer, I decided to refund right away and be done with it. In any other cases I would get them to return, but I just couldn’t see the benefit of it in this case & just got it sorted right away. I know it’s not the end of the world but a negative feedback would probably have come if I’d asked him to return, and then be stuck on the account for a year, reminding me of this months in the future, I’m sure I made the right call. Thanks for watching & appreciate your thoughts on it 😊
@@JammyDodgerFlips I get it, but you should never take an action specifically to avoid the chance of negative feedback. The moment you release yourself from that prison, the reselling game changes. The customer can still have a positive experience, even with a return. You said yourself, the boots looked brand new, we’re 20 years old BUT this can happen. The buyer could also understand that this can happen. For a £100 item I’m calling their bluff, can’t be training buyers that instant refunds are easy - even if they were being honest, which there’s every chance. Did you get your money back from Vinted? I know this comes across argumentative, it’s not meant to, just here because you asked for thoughts.
@@Married2Resellingnah I’m not seeing it as argumentative at all. Fully get where you’re coming from. This was a one of, as I said, I usually go through the whole process. Just this time I really didn’t see the benefit as they were definitely my boots and it just would have been a waste of time for us both. Appreciate your thoughts though! We all do things our own ways, this was how I dealt with the situation. Protecting my account, giving me peace of mind & a happy(ish) buyer 😊
Correct decision to confirm same item and then refund without return. I have had similar before with an old pair of shoes. They look good when listing, but when used in the wet they fall apart.
yeah I'd have refunded as well. I've had exactly the same thing with an old pair of Nike boots... but I was the buyer!! I reckon its a common thing with old Nikes
Hey mate, shame! Obviously it’s a common thing with footy boots. Glad to know I did the correct thing, all about keeping buyers happy & protecting the feedback score 😅
I had this I sold a Ralph L pair slippers sold them on ebay. The buyer said the same as your's and sent photo's ...Just not touch shoes except my own since .I think in time some just don't bend and wear .Refunded and just excepted my mistake :)
I don’t even bother buying older boots or pre 2010 trainers now as it’s absolutely pointless regardless of how cheap they are, no matter the condition, they will fall to bits as soon as they’re worn 99 percent of the time and that’s just a fact, not worth the hassle
I don’t ask for a return unless I think they are being dodgy. My friend sold a very expensive figurine. Had a photo sent of it broken, said it arrived like that. Friend asked for a return, he puts a secret mark on each piece he sells, lo and behold it was not the same piece. Unfortunately they raised a case and they were paid out. I find it better to refund and forget about it, not a nice feeling but one of the hazards of a reseller.
That’s a good idea, there were a few giveaways for me on the additional photos he sent, that made me 100% know they were my boots, slight imperfections, creases etc. So I was happy to process the refund, and make a positive experience.
On previous experiences with selling shoes I put a disclaimer on any shoes older that 4 years old saying due to the age of the shoes the buyer is wearing them at their own risk due to the age of them even tho brand new (or look brand new)
Agree, maybe I should have done something like this. Unfortunately no matter what, eBay would still allow the buyer to open a return and a refund will eventually have to be given. One of the downsides to having a business account.
Also, the Royal Mail shoes…..the reason they are such good condition is that posties used to get a choice of shoes, they saw Dr Martens and went for those, before discovering very quickly that they killed there feet as they need breaking in. A postie I know said they used to warn the newbie posties to not pick the Dr Martens! 😂
Yeah, I’d have refunded in that situation too. If I have any doubt I make them return. But I think you have to use your judgement - but as painful as it was, it was the right call.
It’s reassuring to know the majority of comments are saying the same thing! So glad to know I made the right call. Always a tough decision, but gotta keep the buyer happy at the end of the day. 😊
I would always have them return if postage is a reasonable cost, I've never had anything actually returned to me, despite 3 times I've sent a return label because they said it was broken.
It’s more to the fact that there was no use in a return, it just would have annoyed the buyer more, probably have got a negative on the account and just been a sour experience all round. I’m sure they would have returned, especially for a £100 item. Thanks 😊
A statue I sent got broken by evri even though I wrapped it really well you could tell evri had mistreated the box ,so refunded took the hit so I think you did the right thing
@@carsgonewrong746 oh no they didn't compensate me said it was on the prohibited list of things they don't compensate for that's why I'm never using them again
Yeah always a risk with Evri, high chance any courier would’ve broke it though, so many parcels, they’re always getting chucked about in the warehouses
Wouldn’t have refunded. It’s like doing a Trackday in a classic car, bound for problems. Buyer should’ve known better than to play football in a vintage pair of shoes in my opinion. Also, he may buy every pair of total 90’s that come up on eBay and use the same photos/message. Trust nobody
I had something similar, they used them 3 times but he didn't open a request, so l just ignored the message as they were 2006 total 90 boots which were collectors items... Could be the same person to be fair trying to scam
I reckon they were a pair of old boots that he had, bought a replacement pair i.e. yours, then tried to return his old ones saying the ones you sent him fell apart
Nah they were mine. The additional photos he sent proved this. Could tell by certain creases, markings etc etc. very common on T90s for this to happen.
Tbf, if you know anything about trainers/sneakers, shoes from that age if left for so long will always perish. Would never wear a 20 year old pair of shoes like that especially to play football in. You’ve done nothing wrong and really shouldn’t have had to refund him imo
Yeah agree with you, but unfortunately all part of the game when you have a business account, refunds/returns need to be accepted. It’s no harm done and a lesson learned to properly check my boots before selling!
Honestly, with boots like this, I wouldn’t have bothered as people are very particular about them and will probably see the secondhand glue. My thoughts were that if I refund immediately, the buyer is in the right mind not to leave any negative feedback and just has a positive experience despite the poor item.
Sounds dodgy, there’s a lot of those people and stupid people out there but the good outweighs the bad so chin up and continue! It’s good to be a trader it’s as exciting as buying. However I only buy at the moment I’m a next level antique hunter!
Ps I collected nothing to do with my main interests a selection of vintage Italian boxed walking boots scarpa and zamberlan 40 years old, sooo I know all about this subject.
I had it with a pair of trainers the glue fails where they are so old I had happen to me whilst I was at work I was roofing with pretty much no shoes on lol
Great 😃 video 🎥! I like these raw and real episodes. I would have offered a partial refund to the buyer. Good sales and some nice finds on Vinted especially the Royal Mail 📬 Doc's 😊🎉
Thanks Ally, yeah loved the DM’s! If I did a partial, unfortunately the buyer would have just got angry, probably left a negative and ended up getting the full refund from eBay. It’s not fair for us business sellers sometimes 😢
I’d add some more pictures to your listings, take a bit more time showing the items clearer. Other than that, add more listings, and the shop will start to gain traction & sales will come!

I believe you made the right decision. I would have done the same :)
i was a postie for 6 years, i at to buy my own shoes.
@@burningsoul1365 doesn’t surprise me! Years ago that wasn’t the case though!
That’s really interesting to know, funny that! Don’t blame them, they’re chunky boots, imagine walking miles in them everyday…
May i ask you please is it good to promote your items on ebay? as my sales are veryyy low .
Any advices I appreciate it
Check out my previous video for some help on this. But I only promote at 2.1% - the secret is to price right. Don’t ask too much!
Thanks 😊
I had a few of the Dr. martan boots when I worked at Royal mail..wish i kept them all😢
Ooo they’d would be worth a pretty penny now!
I think it's easier to accept if you feel the buyer is telling the truth, I this case I think they were. then it's just one of those things
Exactly, just one of those things. All
is forgotten & in the past now. 👍🏼
Correct decision imo James.
Thanks 😊
A statue I sent got broken by evri even though I wrapped it really well you could tell evri had mistreated the box ,so refunded took the hit so I think you did the right thing
And they will almost never compensate you.
- don't compensate for electronics over 20 years old
- don't compensate for anything over 50 years old
@@carsgonewrong746 oh no they didn't compensate me said it was on the prohibited list of things they don't compensate for that's why I'm never using them again
Yeah, one of those things unfortunately as a business seller, having to allow all returns etc. He would’ve got the refund anyway in the end.
Probably Becuase they are over 20 years old and arnt to be worn and are probably very fragile by now 😅😂
Yeah buyer should’ve known that, but also my fault for not selling as a collectors piece and just useable footy boots.
I had something similar, they used them 3 times but he didn't open a request, so l just ignored the message as they were 2006 total 90 boots which were collectors items... Could be the same person to be fair trying to scam
If you were sure, refund no question
U could of at least accepted the return and u could easily reglue them but again there's that risk if and how long they would last.
Shit happens I suppose. Can't really be helped and wasn't your fault so, keep on going!
Exactly that! Some problems are out of our hands. Much appreciated 👊🏼
Lad u fleeced someone 100 quid for some sweaty webs ya bought for 7 quid. That's just pure greed.
You obviously don’t understand what this channel is related to.
@JammyDodgerFlips Nah I do. Watched loads of your vids, but this time you got way too greedy.
I had it with a pair of trainers the glue fails where they are so old I had happen to me whilst I was at work I was roofing with pretty much no shoes on lol
Haha who needs shoes anyway?!
@@JammyDodgerFlips good question lol apparently not me that day
Great 😃 video 🎥!
Dea-2652 that’s my name am I pricing wrong James could u pls have a quick look for me? I’m trying to start up from new
Your £2 coins are never going to sell 😂
And your golf clubs need better photos and more details of what the clubs are
I’ve got 19 watchers on the cheaper one
I’d add some more pictures to your listings, take a bit more time showing the items clearer. Other than that, add more listings, and the shop will start to gain traction & sales will come!
