  • Shepherdess Tess shows how to crutch (or crotch) pregnant ewes to prepare them for lambing. We also visit her rams to learn a little more about her breeding program.

We really do love her... I often think of when your brother met her and said “you’re somewhat of a celebrity” it’s true lol
I’m very jealous that you have such a good sheep mentor near you, and one well experienced in sheep milking, too!
People look at me all kinds of crazy when I share that we’re now diving into dairy sheep... (Alabama)
Sheep milk is much closer to the taste of fresh cows milk IMO... if only they would try it first!

I'd love to get into sheep dairy also! I almost did a couple years ago but it didn't work out. Maybe in the future. That's awesome you're doing it

@@TheGrassfedHomestead I hope at some point you do 👍🏻 your channel gets a lot of attention and there is hardly any content on TH-cam about dairy sheep.
      Thanks for the awesome vids!

I raise registered East Friesians in Canada. They should have rat tails (without any wool) and no wool around the udders naturally for more hygienic milking. I think without a registry in the US most lines I see there appear to be mixed.

Do you shave the tail or are they naturally like that?

I’ve seen some pictures of Karras farms East Friesians and their tails look as you describe (rat tail no wool) Im pretty sure though that Tess said hers are mixed but that she started with EF

I watch this video maybe 3 times...it made me and my husband more interested in raising sheep. We have few goats, but more interesting to raise sheep because is biblical, though goat also biblical, knowing that we are doing mission to share the gospel at the same time. We are in a warm country, Philippines and is not common here to raise sheep, but I learn some in our places who has few sheep just for personal use and not for business.

See if you can find st. croix sheep. They do well in tropical environments

Hi - Pat Coleby's book on natural sheep care mentions castor oil drenching during pregnancy. Can you confirm the benefits or risks of that & if recommended, timing & amount to give please. 5 ewes ready to lamb in approx 4 wks - Upstate NY - East Fresians. Thank you.

Pat Coleby knew her stuff for sure but neither Tess nor I use castor oil. I don't have any experience or recommendations with that. I just let nature do it's thing.
