Their mission involves pruning any individual or timeline deemed too dangerous to exist or any timeline that branches away from the established history of the mainline MCU (Earth-616), which the TVA views as the Sacred Timeline. The TVA first appeared in Thor #372 (October 1986), where they were introduced alongside Justice Peace, a character inspired by Judge Dredd. Justice Peace hails from Earth-869371, an alternate future reminiscent of Mega-City One from the Judge Dredd comics and works for the TVA. Justice Peace does not appear in the series but he's worth a mention. Mobius M. Mobius, portrayed by Owen Wilson in the series, made his comic book debut in Fantastic Four #346 (1990). However, he wasn’t named until Fantastic Four #353 (1991), during a storyline where the TVA arrested the Fantastic Four for crimes against synchronicity. The concept of "variants" was popularized by the Loki TV series and refers to alternate versions of a character from different realities or timelines. For example, Loki from the series is a variant of the Loki we know from the established history of the MCU. Similarly, the versions of Gamora, Nebula, and Thanos who traveled from 2014 to 2023 in Avengers: Endgame are also considered variants. Since the term was introduced in Loki it's actually be adopted by the comics as well which is really cool.
