heres a tip you can reduce the number of vertexs with decimate modifier, and itll reduce that blocky deformations while posing (i did that instead of weight painting)

I've never played left 4 dead before and have never modded it, but I'd imagine it has the same file structuring system that half life two has since they both run on source. Unfortunately though I wouldn't really be able to make a document, that'd be very time-consuming and I'm making 'pangy 't vids now. Happy to help with any other questions though

@@Laurassausallejamene well just because they have animations unfortunately does not always mean you can make them into player models just like that, however there is a way to make player models with unique animations although I myself don't actually know how to do it unfortunately

Will seperate model parts/character limbs work with 37:49? Im trying to make a PS1 type character. I should also add that all the seperate parts or limbs use the same texture. Edit: Nevermind. Everything is working fine. The only problem is that the texture is replaced with the purple checkerboard.

when I try to go through with the delete the skeleton step and duplicate the armature, I get a error message saying " modifier cannot be applied to a mesh with shape keys" 18:16 is where I'm at currently

Hey, great vid, way better and up to date than the other tutorials out there, though I'm getting a snag in my work. I'm basically editing the model of a workshop prop, and I've made it up to the point of compiling. Thing is, every time I compile it through crowbar and check the view to see if it came out right, it just turns up invisible. Friend says I made the qc wrong, cause any time I look in the model viewer it tells me there's no model or textures. I don't know how I managed to miss the mark on both ends, and I'm not too sure who to ask for troubleshooting.
@@PossiblySimple did you set up your materials folder correctly? There's a whole process for it. Make sure In your kewsee file you've pointed the materials folder to the right spot on your computer

@@John-Doe69 is it a supported file type? Make sure you follow the steps very carefully, you might not have downloaded the source blender tools, they're needed for importing source models
Is Crowbar necessary if i haven't gotten said playermodel/model from the workshop and i've gotten it externally? Like an MMD model from deviantart or sketchfab?
@@V1creatureofsteel not sure what mmd stands for but yes, if you want to use this guide you will need to get crowbar. It's free and very intuitive though it's the least of your concerns really
I have an old playermodel that exists as a ragdoll in-game, but it doesn't appear in the playermodel list despite being programmed to be one. How can I fix this glitch without Blender/Crowbar/whatever? The skeleton is still rigged, but I can't use it as a playermodel. Is this possibly a mod conflict, or is this fixable without uninstalling/disabling addons?
@@andrewnapolitano8565 unfortunately there's no way of fixing that issue without getting your hands dirty at least with notepad++ and crowbar. Ragdolls are treated as entirely different entities than player models and the only way you would be able to convert the ragdoll to a player model without blender is if you are extremely lucky and it's using a player model skeleton that you can just recompile, but again that would require notepad++ and crowbar regardless
I'm desperate i can't seem to compile the qc file, it says ERROR: c:\users\matil\desktop\umpacked umpacked\FRES.qc(7): - could not load file '106IG.smd' ERROR: Aborted Processing on 'tpang/playerm/106IG.mdl' (FRES is the name i have on my model) Also whever i edit the name into Notepad ++ the line on the edge stays orange instead of turning green like it shows in your video. I tried to restart all the process two times but it still doesn't work, i can only compile it when changing the name back to 106ig, would it matter if i didn't change it but still swapped the mdl file? I just need it to work after all. Plus I'm working with a model i made from scratch on blender instead of dowloading one already present on the workshop, maybe that could be the problem even if it seems weird. @@matildepernarcic5493 I think the line not turning green is possibly because you aren't saving the file. You have to constantly save the qc file as you work and be sure to save your changes before you compile. If you followed the steps in the video and gave the model you made from scratch the skeleton from 106, it should still work. Try saving the qc file after writing in it and check back with me, and MAKE SURE you follow all the steps VERY CAREFULLY. It's very finicky and very simple mistakes and typos can mess the whole thing up

When i close it and then reopenit the changes are still there so i thought that just writing the stuff in worked, i even checked your keybord directory when writing it and it seemed to me that you clicked Ctrl after every entry, i did that and got no luck. @@Da_Point_Kid So like when I want to decompile the gorilla from the 4000 folder, the stuff that showed up for you weren't there and I saw that it wasn't the correct file type to decompile, it was 907896748366821240_legacy.bin
@@ThatLithuanianCapuchin Well first you have to unpack, not decompile. You don't look for the gorilla by typing in "gorilla," you have to find the addon number as shown in the video. Make sure you follow the steps very, very carefully

I've been trying to make a retextured male_07 playermodel, but for some reason it keeps using the original male_07 textures instead of my new textures even though to my knowledge I've set it up to use my new textures. Does anyone know why?

I have a question, when you have too many vertices on a model, does that mean you have to essentially do everything all over again with the improved verts model?
@@evethew0man thanks for the nice comment pimp. You shouldn't have to start from the beginning though, you should be able to just reduce the vertexes on the model using vertex merging or other types of vertex reduction
@@evethew0man well no they aren't exported as live files you would have to reduce vertex count in blender on the model that redo the whole export and compilation process

Are you absolutely certain you have the weights set up properly? You may have accidentally painted areas of the model to bones the areas don't correspond with. Try going into blender and moving the arms in it to see how they react

@@Da_Point_Kid Well as base model i use sao feng model from work shop. But I ported my own model. Everything turned out great except the arms(hand ok) . Also i used same model as you(prisioner 106) But I have the same problem, it's really strange

Maybe it will work if it doesn't, make sure you've launched the game and spawned whatever models are in the addon to make sure gmod has extracted them from the addon for the game. After that check back in the addon/4000 folders and see if it's a gma now. You may actually want to uninstall the addon beforehand too

@@ThePhysgunPals It's gotta be something wrong with the file path... That's the placeholder texture for gmod when it doesn't know where the file you want it to use for the texture exists. You may just want to start over with your textures, be sure the names are correct and the file paths

Recommend teaching people the proportion trick aswell a lot of these models will look terrible including your gorilla model when forced to the proportions of a hl2 citizen

Its a simple script i think it would've been good to touch on it especially since there is low documentation otherwise very good video and its good to have this information for new moders in garrysmod
I looked into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GarrysMod\garrysmod\addons , nothing. I looked into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\4000\1150616390 and still nothing sadly. I only could find a legacy bin thingy that's all.
@@SomerandomLBPfan. okay that is frightening... Anyway your issue is caused by the lua file pointing to a mdl file that it can't find in the models folder. This likely means you have made an error with directory syntax, so be sure to check VERY CAREFULLY that all your file directory info on every level of compilation is correct

hey man i'm making a mod and I need some help with weight painting. I'm trying to weight paint c_hands but when any kind of weight gets painted onto the model, even when transferring weight, the model distorts and the vertices stick out and it just looks really bad. could you give some help fixing it?
@@g5d8 maybe the skeleton is unaligned? If you're transferring weights and the model freaks out try to realign the model (and make sure it has no vertex groups) and maybe do empty weights. Then you can paint them manually
@@Da_Point_Kid when i try to realign and parent the skeleton to the model, it still freaks out and distorts when I transfer the skeleton with automatic weights, and even if I do it with empty groups, the model still messes up and distorts.
@@g5d8 strange I'm sorry to say I've never heard of this issue before. Are you using a model you found off the workshop? Maybe the model you are transferring to already has some kind of armature on it. Make sure you follow all steps to the letter

I've cleanup up my model really good and made sure each and every part is correctly painted and the rest clean. In the example of the forearm, some parts of the hand are staying stationary for some odd reason. Hopefully you can help.
@@Da_Point_Kid It’s a human model, and each vertice is pretty much a copy of how the weight paint is set up on the prisoner model of this video. I’ve looked around and found working with polygons being better, but at this point i might as well clear all weights and start from scratch without normalizing or anything
@@ChronopoulosSte sounds very strange make sure you have each vertex painted to the correct weight. Try moving the pelvis bone, .it's the bone that moves the whole model

Did you change the model head in blender? You may need to check what material is now associated with the new head, since if it's from a separate model it likely has a new name. Check the materials section in blender when you select the blender in object mode, and then copy the name of that material to one of your vtm files, then do all the other file directory stuff. Hope this helps!

@@Nietzotoch sounds like you're trying to compile the old 106 model and not the new one you're replacing it with. Find every instance of "106" in the qc file and replace it with the name of your new model and it should work

Thank you so much for this tutorial! This is the only video I've seen that makes sense to me. I got everything working except for one thing! Textures. I don't know why, but everything works except the textures, and I can't figure out what the problem is. When I open gmod, instead of textures on the model I have a pink checkerboard. I did everything exactly according to the video, but still something is wrong. What could it be?
@@pepuzhka textures are probably the best thing to get wrong because unless you're doing something special with like cubemaps or animated textures then it should be an easy fix. The purple checkerboard is a placeholder texture that's applied to a model when gmod can't find the texture you want to use on it. To fix it, it should just be a file location thing, so make sure you have EVERY SINGLE FOLDER DIRECTORY set up correctly from step one, and follow the steps in the video to a tee. Also if that doesn't work, open blender and check on the model itself what the material is named, and make sure the vmt file in your materials folder matches

I keep getting the errors "Couldn't include file 'autorun\smar.lua' - File not found or is empty ()" and "AddCSLuaFile: Couldn't find 'autorun/smar.lua'" when i load into a map, even though the files are there UPDATE: I figured it out. The name of the addon's folder shouldn't have periods or spaces or anything.
Seems there's an issue with your lua file. Check your file directories again and make sure your playermodel folder has a lua file to begin with, make sure you follow the directions VERY carefully it's incredibly finicky but the lua thing should be an easy fix
@@BannerXML texture errors can only be caused by a few things, they're not as complex as modelling errors so all you should have to do is be VERY careful and closely follow the directions. Are you doing anything fancy like animated textures or deforming textures?

guys make sure, when you select the skeleton and then the model, that you do SHIFT and not CTRL. It might look the same but it is completely differnet

It may not be in your add-ons folder at all but in your workshop content folder. Try watching the segment at 8:16

Ragdolls are treated as entirely different entities than player models and the only way you would be able to convert the ragdoll to a player model without blender is if you are extremely lucky and it's using a player model skeleton that you can just recompile, but again that would require notepad++ and crowbar regardless
I'm desperate i can't seem to compile the qc file, it says ERROR: c:\users\matil\desktop\umpacked umpacked\FRES.qc(7): - could not load file '106IG.smd'
ERROR: Aborted Processing on 'tpang/playerm/106IG.mdl'
(FRES is the name i have on my model)
Also whever i edit the name into Notepad ++ the line on the edge stays orange instead of turning green like it shows in your video.
I tried to restart all the process two times but it still doesn't work, i can only compile it when changing the name back to 106ig, would it matter if i didn't change it but still swapped the mdl file? I just need it to work after all. Plus I'm working with a model i made from scratch on blender instead of dowloading one already present on the workshop, maybe that could be the problem even if it seems weird. @@matildepernarcic5493 I think the line not turning green is possibly because you aren't saving the file. You have to constantly save the qc file as you work and be sure to save your changes before you compile. If you followed the steps in the video and gave the model you made from scratch the skeleton from 106, it should still work. Try saving the qc file after writing in it and check back with me, and MAKE SURE you follow all the steps VERY CAREFULLY. It's very finicky and very simple mistakes and typos can mess the whole thing up

When i close it and then reopenit the changes are still there so i thought that just writing the stuff in worked, i even checked your keybord directory when writing it and it seemed to me that you clicked Ctrl after every entry, i did that and got no luck. @@ThatLithuanianCapuchin Well first you have to unpack, not decompile. You don't look for the gorilla by typing in "gorilla," you have to find the addon number as shown in the video. Make sure you follow the steps very, very carefully

I have a question, when you have too many vertices on a model, does that mean you have to essentially do everything all over again with the improved verts model?
@@evethew0man thanks for the nice comment pimp. You shouldn't have to start from the beginning though, you should be able to just reduce the vertexes on the model using vertex merging or other types of vertex reduction

Are you absolutely certain you have the weights set up properly? You may have accidentally painted areas of the model to bones the areas don't correspond with. Try going into blender and moving the arms in it to see how they react

Maybe it will work if it doesn't, make sure you've launched the game and spawned whatever models are in the addon to make sure gmod has extracted them from the addon for the game. After that check back in the addon/4000 folders and see if it's a gma now. You may actually want to uninstall the addon beforehand too

is the models\cooldude in materials folder? Because $cdmaterials and $basetexture searches your given directory from the materials folder.

@@ThePhysgunPals It's gotta be something wrong with the file path... That's the placeholder texture for gmod when it doesn't know where the file you want it to use for the texture exists. You may just want to start over with your textures, be sure the names are correct and the file paths
Bro my button in export menu is just gray and doesn’t work, i parented the model to gmod bones and set every file path correctly.

I have an issue with finding the model in my addon folder. I actually did the workshop method but i ended up only finding a BIN file and not a GMA.
Did you check the other "addons" folder?
I looked into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GarrysMod\garrysmod\addons , nothing.

and still nothing sadly.

@@SomerandomLBPfan. okay that is frightening... Anyway your issue is caused by the lua file pointing to a mdl file that it can't find in the models folder. This likely means you have made an error with directory syntax, so be sure to check VERY CAREFULLY that all your file directory info on every level of compilation is correct

hey man i'm making a mod and I need some help with weight painting. I'm trying to weight paint c_hands but when any kind of weight gets painted onto the model, even when transferring weight, the model distorts and the vertices stick out and it just looks really bad. could you give some help fixing it?
@@g5d8 maybe the skeleton is unaligned? If you're transferring weights and the model freaks out try to realign the model (and make sure it has no vertex groups) and maybe do empty weights. Then you can paint them manually
@@Da_Point_Kid when i try to realign and parent the skeleton to the model, it still freaks out and distorts when I transfer the skeleton with automatic weights, and even if I do it with empty groups, the model still messes up and distorts.
@@g5d8 strange I'm sorry to say I've never heard of this issue before. Are you using a model you found off the workshop? Maybe the model you are transferring to already has some kind of armature on it. Make sure you follow all steps to the letter

I am at the weight brushing part. I've cleanup up my model really good and made sure each and every part is correctly painted and the rest clean.
In the example of the forearm, some parts of the hand are staying stationary for some odd reason. Hopefully you can help.

@@Da_Point_Kid It’s a human model, and each vertice is pretty much a copy of how the weight paint is set up on the prisoner model of this video. I’ve looked around and found working with polygons being better, but at this point i might as well clear all weights and start from scratch without normalizing or anything
@@ChronopoulosSte sounds very strange make sure you have each vertex painted to the correct weight. Try moving the pelvis bone, .it's the bone that moves the whole model
great tutorial but i cant seem to get the vtfs working because i did some alterations to the model (i changed its head), could you provide some help on how to fix it?
Did you change the model head in blender? You may need to check what material is now associated with the new head, since if it's from a separate model it likely has a new name. Check the materials section in blender when you select the blender in object mode, and then copy the name of that material to one of your vtm files, then do all the other file directory stuff. Hope this helps!

@@Nietzotoch sounds like you're trying to compile the old 106 model and not the new one you're replacing it with. Find every instance of "106" in the qc file and replace it with the name of your new model and it should work

Textures. I don't know why, but everything works except the textures, and I can't figure out what the problem is. When I open gmod, instead of textures on the model I have a pink checkerboard. I did everything exactly according to the video, but still something is wrong. What could it be?
@@pepuzhka textures are probably the best thing to get wrong because unless you're doing something special with like cubemaps or animated textures then it should be an easy fix. The purple checkerboard is a placeholder texture that's applied to a model when gmod can't find the texture you want to use on it. To fix it, it should just be a file location thing, so make sure you have EVERY SINGLE FOLDER DIRECTORY set up correctly from step one, and follow the steps in the video to a tee. Also if that doesn't work, open blender and check on the model itself what the material is named, and make sure the vmt file in your materials folder matches

I keep getting the errors "Couldn't include file 'autorun\smar.lua' - File not found or is empty ()" and "AddCSLuaFile: Couldn't find 'autorun/smar.lua'" when i load into a map, even though the files are there
UPDATE: I figured it out. The name of the addon's folder shouldn't have periods or spaces or anything.
Seems there's an issue with your lua file. Check your file directories again and make sure your playermodel folder has a lua file to begin with, make sure you follow the directions VERY carefully it's incredibly finicky but the lua thing should be an easy fix

@@BannerXML texture errors can only be caused by a few things, they're not as complex as modelling errors so all you should have to do is be VERY careful and closely follow the directions. Are you doing anything fancy like animated textures or deforming textures?
