However, he consulted with Anglophone actors and staff to ensure that the dialogue sounded credible and coherent. Regardless of how long he’d spent in Tokyo, Noé’s portrayal of its underbelly is accurate and doesn’t veer into campy stereotypes about the yakuza and *hostesses*
Anyone can make a movie about anything,as long as they do their research and are open to criticism from those who know better. This movie is taking everything decades back.
Emilia Perez has the worst of everything: worst plot story, worst music (if you can call it that), worst acting, worst attempt on the woke message that has ever been put on film. I had some Japanese exchange students stay with my family for a few weeks when I was I high school. Not once did I think they should ad a Canadian accent to our names 😂 Also they never asked either. Aside from them teaching my mom and brother to say Daisuke which sounds very much like Daisuki. It was hilarious when we broke the news to them that they kept saying “I love you” for about a week to the one Japanese student.

Actually, I’m not that surprised. I met my first transsexual man and woman in 1975 via a psych professor who was consulting with doctors performing these surgeries in a Connecticut hospital. I remember feeling amazed by their conviction and bravery in front a bunch of 20somethings who found this a brave new world. I just don’t understand why we can’t embrace and celebrate all our differences. It’s really so sad.

It's a French movie, so why isn't it just in the Best Foreign Film category? I thought Oscars was mainly for American produced movies, while Emilia Pérez only has French production companies behind it.

On some occassions in the past I supposed the movies were just so good, interesting to the judges or for some reason they didn't want to give it to any American production back then. I suspect it's politics, but I don't know how it works. I'm just saying, no way all these people saw this and were stricken by how amazing it was, much less in America where people are more familiar both with Mexicans and of course with Latin-Americans than in Europe.

I really enjoyed the comparisons to Chernobyl and Shōgun to highlight the poor quality of this movie. If you don't speak a word of Spanish, do not put a goofy accent on whenever you say a Spanish name. It sounds like parody.

@popculturita unfortunately Chernobyl wasn't that good actually. Culturaly accurate but historically not so much. I even remember one of the survivors giving an interview to a newspaper explaining what was wrong. Just one example the minister they showed as a young man was in his fifties and an experienced miner instead of some greenhorn who doesn't understand anything
