My sister had a Charger (LOL) 2.2...didn't care for it. I was fun getting the ass end to drift on highway clover leafs.

I had an Omni Charger like that, and my mom had a 78 Horizon brand new. These cars were slow but a blast to drive. You were correct that 1.7 was developed by VW/Audi and used in them early on.
