    Manchester United’s midfield pair of Fred and McTominay have been struggling together. Scott McTominay, however, has shown signs of leadership on and off the field. So could he thrive in another position?
    He has been known to play in defence for Scotland. So could he do it for Man United?
    JJ Bull explains.

      He's the replacement Darren Fletcher. Playing for the same club too. Not sure why Manchester United persisted in playing either of them for so long, honestly. Neither good enough and probably not good enough for Scotland either. Flattered by the club they play for rather than deserving of the amount of game time they saw for their country.

      Top tier sides (which Man U *should* be) need technically gifted players in the middle of the park. Players who are press resistant and can receive the ball under pressure before distributing around the pitch. Think Rodri for City and Jorginho/Kovacic for Chelsea. McTominay is the workhorse midfielder typically found in the likes of West Brom or Stoke who prioritise workmate over technical ability.

    I've said for a while now that McTominay is a box player, rather than a box-to-box midfielder, because if you look at the stats, he is good for clearances, and last season showed he can be dangerous going forward, unfortunately it is the things in between each box that he struggles with!
    He'd probably be just as good as a pressing forward as he is a centre back.

    • @Taeerom
      @Taeerom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      In other words, he's best at the bench. He can come in as an extra man in either defense, midfield, or attack as far as the situation calls for it.
      But then he'd have to be mentally good enough to actually do the right things in these spots, and I don't know if McTom is.

    • @MrLePov
      @MrLePov 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Taeerom not the point I was getting at, but I do agree. 😂 He shouldn't be a starter for United, should be a sub to come on when the team needs more energy.
      I think in terms of doing the right things in the right spots, he would probably actually be the most natural as a striker, because he played there as a kid and for most of his teens. 😅🤔
      It could come down to coaching as well, because I think he is the kind of player who doesn't exactly have the best instincts or awareness, but is good at following specific instructions, such as when he was clearly intended to get forward and be dangerous in the game vs Leeds.
      If he had a manager who gave him very specific instructions and roles in each game, I think he could be very effective.

    At United he does absolutely nothing for himself.

      He seems to have a mismatch of strenghts that make him not that good at every position - he has the enegry and tackling of a DM, but not the passing and positioning, the build of a CB, but not the defesive sense, and good attacking movement, but not the technique to play an attacking role. A bit like Fellaini minus some elbows, he could work in a limited system, probably as a sort of target man/10 hybrid

    • @lonestarr1490
      @lonestarr1490 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wwanimator Kind of my thoughts. Maybe one could apply him as a kind of mid block specialist. Like a defensive midfielder playing higher up the pitch in order to break opponents' build-up play or transition into counter attacks early on, but without too many responsibilities in terms of progression. The caveat, of course: you'll need an additional defensive midfielder behind him as well as a genuine progressor or playmaker next to him.

    Provide the same to McT and he will right up there.
    Conte would have done that for sure.
    Also i think can play as a Wide Midfielder in the old school 4-4-2. (Saul / Koke played the same position under Simeone, i think.)

    McT Matic Fred
    Donny
    Rashford Greenwood.

      Positioning, communication, aerial ability, would let him down, amongst other things. He was a winger in youth so he doesn't have the traits of a CB at all. When he presses down the right he often overcommits and leaves space in behind. He'd also be a pressing trigger for opposition because of his tendency to take loose touches or make bad decisions. @@shane4362 those are excellent points. But I'm not so sure about the not worth coaching part. I see this as a cost vs. benefit thing. United aren't good at the back anyway, and I feel they could at least maintain the (not so high) level, merely changing an average defender for another. But I believe the attacking could improve substantially since he's pretty bad going forward. Of course all of this is not ideal, it's just their squad is so poorly put together (no logic behind it).

    question, in Man U's back 3/5, wouldn't AWB be the best option as the right sided CB? Either way its a desperate shame they even have to play this formation.

    Fred gets so much criticism when he’s not even at fault. McTominay is always hiding behind players never coming deep to ask for the ball or helping out his midfield partner. He’s basically useless on the pitch, but because Ole loves him he starts ahead of VDB

    McTominay isn't a defender. He just provides legs and covers grass. McTominay and Freds best performances have come when Man United sit in a low block out of possession.
    Clearly this season Ole wants the team to press high in a 4-2-4 but the team isn't up to it cause they don't press in packs.

    Love how everything is about united at the moment. When they were doing reasonably well at the beginning of the season, nothing but as soon as they falter content comes out.
    De bruyne not being in form and grealish being underwhelming and not having enough goals or assists for man city isn't even mentioned anywhere. Lukaku though injured atm hasn't scored in a lot of games recently, but forget it let's talk about how ronaldo may or may not be a problem for united even though he has 8 goals in 11 games.

    Well, how about him as a wingback, while Wan-Bissaka plays the RCB in a back 3?
    He seems like he has the lungs to go up and down the flanks, while enough defensive capabilities to track back.

    • @WOOOPdoctorFROGhere
      @WOOOPdoctorFROGhere 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's a catastrophic idea. They're bad enough in their strongest positions, moving them out of position would just be self sabotage. I don't know who is more ill suited to it. Wan Bissaka is too brainless to play RCB. You mustn't have ever watched United live as you'd have surely seen Wan Bissakas atrocious positioning. Mctominay at right wing back, no pace, can't cross it, can't dribble, can't work in tight spaces, can't even tackle.

  • @jkmusingss
    @jkmusingss 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    So, basically, he's a (at least decently) talented player who rarely gets to play to his actual strengths due to the roles he's asked to play? And United still spent 100 mil or whatever on a wing they don't use instead of a world class holding midfielder? The sheer incompetence...
    Great breakdown as always, though.

    If ole wants to keep his job by playing a back 3 bring scott in rcb shaw as lcb varane as the central play telles,dalot as wing backs play donny and matic in mid field with bruno cavani and cr7 upfront rotate as much as possible for smaller games and dont just smile after losses make quick subs when needed stay on the heels during a match pinpoint the flaws and stick to a particular set of tactics only then are they capable of surviving in the top 4 else they may not finish even in top 6 with spurs, everton, leciester and arsenal competing for the spot.
