Adding Vectors (Mathematically and Graphically) - A Level Physics

  • This video explains adding vectors, both mathematically and graphically for A Level Physics.
    The resultant of two (or more) vectors is the single vector that produces the same effect. Adding vectors, sometimes called combining vectors, mathematically we use Pythagoras' theorem and SOH-CAH-TOA to combine two vectors that are perpendicular into one resultant vector. Adding or combining vectors graphically must be done as accurately as possible. We set a scale such that the size of a vector is proportional to its length and the angles between them must be done accurately.

    When adding vectors, are we using the tan=opp/adj or the tan-1 (opp/adj)?

    • @noamamarfarkash1189
      @noamamarfarkash1189 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those two are the different ways to write the same thing. tan^-1(opp/adj) is what you plug into the calculator.

    when you were solving the sum of two vectors using mathematics the vectors that you have made a right angle however what would you do if the vectors did not make a right angle, Pythagoras' theorem would no longer work

    • @PhysicsOnline
      @PhysicsOnline  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Waja Hat 99% of the time at A Level there will be a right angled traingle somewhere - but you could always use the sin rule if there wasn't a 90 degree angle.

    Nice example. The angle should be 30 degrees North of East (short of long) or 30 degrees if using CCW 360 values (not 70 East of North).

    • @ElliotKray
      @ElliotKray 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any rule works, as long as you have all the values for the sides and the correct angle, just make sure you use the right function for which sides you are using.
