Check out the Open Source Godot engine and the paid "Learn Gamedev From Zero with Godot 4" course.

Just started learning Lua to make games in Love2d less than a week ago, the algorithm brought me here.

@@tamta_asatiani Sure! I've got a Major in CS. I took a course called 2D Game Development near the end of undergrad that focused on learning to use the SDL library to make a simple game. For my final project I designed a tactical RPG battle system where the enemies pathfind to you on their turn and deal damage if they hit you, and you have to shoot rockets at them on your turn to stop them. I designed it with some tactical complexity in mind but the demo for the project was pretty rough and extremely trivial 😅 The open green field, the red highlight on the squares you can move, and the way the game doesn't really show your remaining health are all pretty much exactly like what I ended up with, haha. There's a lot more elements to getting the look and feel of this kind of game right than one might expect lol.

@@rubyreverie6484 ooof i felt all that. the mechanical quirk of this game was supposed to be that you get items from battles that you then use to gain affinity with other npcs so they join your party, that's why there's items you can pick up that don't do anything (bc i got tired). i cut a lot of things i had planned
