Interesting Counties used to have their own styles of hedge laying. With competitions. When I was at Lackham when it was a rural life site there were 3 different styles of hedge laying from wiltshire.
Slow but thorough long lasting making hedge more manageable and very stockproof
Dead hedges are miraculous ways of using green waste and encouraging wildlife way better than bee hotels and lacewing houses. Staghorn beetle larvae need 7 years of rotting wood to grow and flourish. We are on the edge of the retreating line of extinction

They still hold national competitions now with loads of styles. Old hedges like this though are more lay it where it’ll go, nothing is easy on wild growth

So are they building a canal down there? Where will it go to??, Be great if I could cycle from Chippenham to Bath

At the moment it’s in water from pewsham locks to Naish hill. They have the Naish hills section now so hopefully that’ll be in water in the next year or two. That takes it close to lacock. There’s plans in the trust to get the tow path together first which will mean a cycle route back to the K&A possible allowing you to cycle to bath. It’s a hard ride otherwise, I’ve done it a few times before.

How do they propose crossing the A4 just east of Chippenham

It’s a question I’ve asked previously and not one that has been answered. I don’t think there are any concrete plans but it’s not a major obstacle. The biggest obstacle at the moment is the M4 which is something they are working on.

It will have to be a bridge once that section is in water and of course that will cost a serious amount of money. Initially we hope to open the tow path, currently heading from the Hyundai Garage to the Chippenham Calne cycleway. When we get close to connecting the Pewsham path to the Chippenham Calne cycleway we will approach Wilts Council re pelican crossing similar to that at Derry Hill. Dave M Chair MCC Branch WBCT

Really wish you luck but, having lived in Pewsham for 20 years I’ve no idea how you plan to join up with the rest of the canal.

There are plans in motion for mist sections, it’s a big task though

David...we are currently on our way to Melksham, via the Bell Inn at Lacock and are constantly chatting to land owners re accessing thier land to get to te River Avon at Melksham A new stretch of canal is planned from Semmington to the River Avon just by the Farmers Roundabout. EA is asking challenging questions, and rightly so, which we are attempting to answer/over come. A source of water will asway be a challenge but we aim to open tow paths, like the 1.5km at Pewsham, first. Dave M Chair MCC Branch WBCT
