We watched it live in my 4th grade class. I'll never forget it.
Yup me too
You too old for that pfp bro

@@Meangreenmonstermachineyou realize people aging doesn't make them different people.
My 96 year old grandfather used to smoke juicy j blunts and watch adventure time with me when I was like 19 and hed make better jokes than anyone. A 96 year old is just a dude who's been alive for like 76 years longer than everyone else around. He'd been in war etc helped save the last supper mural by stacking sandbags around it.
I was in elementary school in Seminole, FL. The teachers had us outside because we could see the shuttle. I was too young to understand what I was seeing, but I'll never forget seeing the smoke. The teachers were crying and quickly took us back inside.
One of my core childhood memories, i remember exactly where i was when it happened
Will be forever etched in my memory for sure 😢
Kinda like 9/11. Now a days no one watches cable television. Most people don't even know we're basically at war with Russia right now. More worried about what someone posted on Facebook. An see a billion advertisements
Yep
sir that is not a memory its a nightmare
True
The external fuel tank exploded from a seal that couldn't handle the cold conditions of a launch and they launched it anyway, the seal broke, eventually burning a hole through the tank igniting it, the crew is believed to have survived the explosion but not the impact when it fell, that's what continues going after the explosion
Not exactly. Nothing exploded because there was no shockwave.
The booster rocket developed a leak and burned through its lower mount. That might have been ok actually except the shuttle was encountering wind shear.
The lower mount broke and caused the rocket to crash its tip into the top of the external tank. At that speed the external tank and orbiter broke up almost immediately
As always. Money
Who are you, Richard Feynman?
Yeah it was a deflagration, the flash was from gasses mixing and burning - assuming they survived the in flight break up, they died when they hit the water
O ring patrol fail.
This was horrifying. I remember it well.
Same here .
Im sorry thr lost thet i fnt fink it was Sabatier its a leaking fuel or something
@@stevenroberts970never said she lost anyone
@@stevenroberts970 It was an "O-ring" that overheated. A small inexpensive part cost the lives of everyone on board while the country watched. Sad, but that is usually the case.We don't truly understand the complexity of such a venture. I was in Florida at my mother-in-law's condo during the final shuttle launch (though I believe they have either brought back the program since or begun a new one). I watched from the beach (Cocoa Beach)as it disappeared into the sky and ran inside to confirm on a live news cable channel that there was no disaster further up than I could see. My kids were a bit surprised at my need to confirm that they were ok like that, but I was in HS when he Challenger exploded. It isn't something you forget.
I’m from Germany. I was 11 years old. And it’s my mums birthday on 28th January. We were watching the start on TV waiting for the guests to come to the birthday party. It was very sad and strange for me to see the accident on TV. I couldn’t believe it is true.

My teacher just explained her experience with us today and said her teachers did the exact same thing
Same! Ours had the TV on one of those cart things to push between rooms and I’ll never forget she shut it off and quickly pushed it out of the room crying….

Bro what a B
Millions of dollars….hundreds of engineers…..and couldn’t figure out what a high school kid would know….extreme cold makes rubber shrink and brittle
Not even. There’s a whole report on it, the engineers responsible for upkeep on the shuttles specifically told them the O-Rings couldn’t tolerate the conditions they were trying to launch in, not to mention the components were being overstressed from too many flights.
NASA officials received this information and proceeded to completely disregard their professional reports and opinions because they didn’t want to deal with the bad PR that accompanies extended launch delays.

TIL Big Bird was almost on the Challenger. Caroll Spinney said yes to being asked if he wanted to do it, but NASA backed out because it was too hard to fit an 8’2 bird on the spacecraft.

Rip To the people on the Rocket
I was in 8th grade at the time, my former 7th grade teacher tried out for this Teacher in Space program - exciting at the time, but obviously thankful he wasnt chosen. We sat and watched this liftoff live. I loved watching these launches on TV, saw Discovery launch in person in June '85. When this explosion happened I immediately knew this wasn't right - and just blurted out "did it just blow up!?!" Teacher scolded me, thinking I was being a smarta**. Then seeing the external rockets fly out of control, it sadly just seemed obvious. Still shocking to no end. eh...total gut punch. I THOUGHT there was some kind of ejection pod and maybe they were ok, but no. When mission control made the statement "the vehicle has exploded", teacher just turned the TV off. It was a catholic school...so we immediately said a prayer.
I live in Dallas and heard the boom. Never forget it!

@@ami2evil okay I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking that no way you could hear it from several states away

‼️‼️ My granddaddy lives in japan he said he heard it.
They WERE CLEARLY, SPECIFICALLY TOLD, to WAIT for the rubber SEALS to expand to PROPERLY SEAL, the connector for the Fuel lines on the Bosters.
They could have been saved … they could have had a lifesaving design…
Their capsule could have had a parachute 🪂 to slow down
At Mach 1.92 no parachute works.
Since the orbiter broke up it’s likely the part with the shoot would have been damaged.
I was in highschool when this happened 😮😮😮....
I remember being in 5th grade when this happened, watching it live in the morning before school. Then we spent the entire day doing nothing but watching news broadcast on it, and they replayed the explosion probably every 5 or 10 minutes.
Euope 'Final Countdown' will always bring us back to this memory.
The day Challenger crew left this dimension.
That space shuttle disaster was the result of NASA management avoided safety concerns for profitable investors.

The most sad moment in life
@@saralancournah
Yep it was too cold and they were warned to scrub that launch but they didn't
They knew what they saw.
They didn't want to believe what they saw.
However they saw it.
Live.
There are experts who can supply documentation of their opinion that the people in the capsule survived the explosion and were alive and awake during the descent of the capsule into the water. They say the people died when they hit the water. I can’t imagine the terror these people endured during this time even if it was relatively short. I believe we were told that the people were dead after the explosion so we and their families would not understand what really happened to them. 😢😢

Watching this as a kindergartener was equivalent to watching the 2nd plane hit the World Trade Center on 9/11. It was surreal! It felt more like Kabuki Theater than it did something real that actually happened right in front of your eyes. The feeling is hard to explain.

This was the first national disaster of my lifetime that I can remember. Almost everyone was very shaken.
Upon further reflection, I can recall that my grandfather was still alive at this time although he was still quite ill with the brain cancer that would eventually kill him. I only had my grandfather for 8 and a 1/2 years. I do have some good memories of him. I love him and miss him very much. 😓
