एक बार, रानीखेत को ब्रिटिश भारत के ग्रीष्मकालीन मुख्यालय के रूप में नामित करने का प्रस्ताव था, जो एक उपाधि शिमला को दी गई थी। रानीखेत सदियों पुरानी शाही और औपनिवेशिक विरासत को संजोए हुए है और यह खूबसूरत छावनी शहर जनरल काशी नाथ अधिकारी जैसे कई बहादुर लोगों की भूमि है। आज यह कुमाऊँ रेजिमेंट का मुख्यालय है । एक किंवदंती कहती है कि एक कुमाऊंनी रानी इस छोटे से पहाड़ी स्वर्ग से मंत्रमुग्ध हो गई थी और उसके सम्मान में यहां एक महल बनाया गया था, इसलिए इसे 'रानी की भूमि' नाम दिया गया। हालाँकि आज महल का कोई निशान नहीं मिलता है, लेकिन रानीखेत वैसा ही है: मनोरम, स्वर्गीय हिमालयी परिवेश के बीच फूलों, पेड़ों और हरी घास के मैदानों से भरपूर। दिलचस्प बात यह है कि नौ छेद वाला रानीखेत गोल्फ कोर्स एशिया में सबसे ऊंचे में से एक है और इस कोर्स की घुमावदार घास के मैदान लुभावने हैं। यह स्थान कई मशहूर हस्तियों को आकर्षित करता है, जो इसके शांत वातावरण को पसंद करते हैं, जिनमें अभिनेता रजनीकांत भी शामिल हैं। तमिल फिल्म उद्योग के सुपरस्टार रानीखेत के नियमित आगंतुक हैं, जहां वह ऋषि महा अवतार बाबा की ध्यान गुफा का दौरा करते हुए दूनागिरी पहाड़ियों (लगभग 45 किमी दूर) के रास्ते में रुकते हैं।
