Page is like the coolest cat. My obsession is with Robert & still is to this day 52 years & still adore, admire, respect him & when he plays the harmonica……damn.I saw & met Robert on his first solo tour & he was fantastic! Now add to that the fact that Page’s experience with the Yardbirds and Jonsey’s experience as a session player meant that half the band had done extensive work in studio, and knew intimately how to get what they wanted. The layers on their body of work is most impressive. Prolific recording artists.
Helene here. Can you IMAGINE this as a debut album?. When this dropped in 1969, it was heavy as sh*t. Nothing even approached it other than Hendrix. My college roommate and I went out and bought this, returned to our dorm room and dropped the needle. OMG. When this song started, we just sat and stared at each other…,stunned. I wanted to hide under the bed……..it was sounds right out of a horror flick. It took me many listens to relax into it……..now over 50 years later it’s one of my favorite Zep cuts. The musicianship and singing is incredible.
If you like experimental music, the 1973 Madison Square Garden version of dazed and confused is the way to go. It's long but it will take you all over the place emotionally. A bunch of improvisation.

When Jimmy was still in The Yardbirds, they did a cover of it and after The Yardbirds broke up, Jimmy reworked it again for Led Zeppelin and would become his showpiece. He isn't the first to do it, but he was able to employ it with such great effect that it's something that's become synonymous with his name. Plant seems to get a bit lost.
Dazed and Confused live will absolutely blow you away do the 1973 msg version . You will get to see Jimmy making the most creative haunting sounds you have ever herd.. This performance is probably the best live recorded song in the history of filmed recording. I really like your idea of doing live versions on the weekend. My only suggestion would be to only do the live songs that you have already herd the studio cuts from. Reason being the live shows were full of improvisions. Like Dazed and Confused live is a 28 minute song . But now after hearing the studio version you will much more appreciate what the live version is. Led Zeppelin never played the songs the same live every performance would be a unique jam session that could go in any direction at any time. That was one of the things that made their live shows a experience . Because you never knew what you would hear. As for psychedelic rock, there were other bands that were considered psychedelic rock groups such as Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, The Jimi Hendrix, SteppenwolfThe Byrds and Iron Butterfly to name a few and who were all contemporary with or just before Zep. Even the Beatles had several psychedelic songs. Also keep in mind that not all the songs from these groups would fall into the psychedelic category but these artists all had a number of great psychedelic songs which if you wanted to hear you could get suggestions from many of your listeners. You could also do a more or less chronological review of early to late songs from this genre.

Of course, Jimmy Page being a former Yardbirds guitarist brought with him some of the experimental and psychedelic sounds as well as studio recording techniques that added ambience to the band's music, especially in the track, _How Many More Times._ If you're really into psychedelic music and want to delve into that genre but don't want to go too far underground (there are many underground '60s bands), I suggest listening to Pink Floyd's first two albums for more taste of the psychedelic genre. That would probably be a good start. The psych genre is an extremely deep rabbit hole to dive into. There are several sub-genres and it will literally take years..
The Beatles have their psychedelic period, between 1966 - 1968, for the most part. Jimi Hendrix has a lot of psychedelic music, The Doors is very experimental, Pink Floyd, etc.
My preference is the Dazed & Confused...but the 1969 "supershow" live version. This captures the raw power of Robert's voice and the nastiness of Jimmy's guitar. The 1973 MSG show is also good, but is more of a showcase for Jimmy. Robert's singing annoys me on this version.

Great song! For live versions, it's difficult to find decent quality video of some of their early songs during live performances, but there are a few decent videos available of Dazed and Confused. Three options: 1. The more "restrained" 7.5-minute version during their London 1969 performance 2. A 15-minute more improvisational version during their The Royal Albert Hall concert in 1970 3. An all out Page-going-crazy-on-the-guitar 29-minute version during their 1973 Madison Square Garden concert that is killer. During the '73 concert, they were flipping on fire, and they were clearly having a blast. If you go with the '73 concert version, I'd hang in there with ya. If you think it's too long and choose something else, give it a listen when you have time. It's a wild ride. :)

Unlike most other bands, the studio cut was just a point in time in the early life of a song. Once a track was recorded, it grew, expanded, evolved, and always changed once they took the song on the road. Like most of their songs, the live versions were 2x, 3x, and sometimes 4x or 5x longer in a live setting than they were on the studio albums. In that way, Led Zep was more like a heavy duty jazz band rather than a traditional rock band. And although I love all the studio cuts, in order to really *know Zeppelin, you have to know them, live.
Yep... if a person doesn't know live Zep, then that person doesn't really know them at all. Live shows were their most natural habitat. In a way, it was as if some of the studio versions of their songs were small seeds that would bloom and grow on a live stage.
Only got to see them live once. Absolutely the most incredible concert ever. The energy and power that flowed off of that stage was spellbinding. They were BETTER than any other band and still are BETTER.
I played bass, I always found keeping up with the middle section there during the solo that you were talking about kinda hard. Finger placement for me I think might have been an issue for me because I don't have long fingers, but also, it does take a lot of stamina to keep that up. There are a few songs that are like that, not just Zeppelin but mostly it's In My Time Of Dying that did me in. I don't known how they did that night after night for years.
Psychedelic? Try Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Some of the more mainstream songs you can handle are Lucky Man, From the Beginning, Still...You Turn Me On, Karn Evil 9: 1st Impression Part 2, Fanfare for the Common Man. Most of their other stuff is way experimental and admittedly pretentious but hey, you might like it.
I’ve got this comment before but this band was way before I was even born. I grew up listening to sun 41 and taking back Sunday and Backstreet Boys. Lol. I had 0 interest in this band growing up
If you want real psychedelic stuff, you would love the early Pink Floyd. Check out some of their much longer atmospheric tracks like 'Set the controls for the heart of the sun', 'Interstellar overdrive', 'Careful with that axe, Eugene' or 'Echoes'. If you want to stray into Prog Rock maybe some King Crimson or Gentle Giant if you want to be really challenged with experimental music which fuses many genres and will baffle and intrigue you.

You asked about psychedelic bands around this time . Here goes. Around this time, you had The Doors, Steppenwolf, Moody Blues, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Country Joe and the Fish, Jefferson Airplane, and several others who Did psychedelic experimental stuff. Probably easiest way is to suggest songs: Steppenwolf, Magic Carpet Ride. Country Joe, Sweet Lorraine. Hendrix…Are You Experienced. The Beatles, Within You and Without You. Cream, Tales of Brave Ulysses. Moody Blues……pretty much anything…great and first psychedelic prog band. The Doors….hell their whole vibe was darkly psychedelic…stoner stuff, but Riders on the Storm would be good. The mother of all psychedelic songs is by Iron Butterfly, called In-a-gadda-da-vida. THAT is a stoner trip. Finally, Pink Floyd was ( and perhaps still is) THE band to take a trip with……but their music as a whole is not defined as psychedelic. The closest would be the song/soundscape Echoes from their album Meddle. At least, these are the suggestions of a stoner from the 60’s and early 70’s.

Many many great bands you have to look forward to over the coming years, but I will bet you that Zeppelin snd Floyd will remain in your top five throughout. There’s just really no topping them , unless you go completely prog and get into those bands like Yes snd Rush. Floyd is really their own genre. Nothing like them before or since. And Floyd DEMANDS live shows because they deliberately went for visual as well as auditory impact.
Since you seem to be doing each album track by track, I think you will notice how diverse they start becoming once they start getting a little away from the blues. A real hidden gem on this album is the last track "How many more times." I personally think it's every bit as good as Dazed and Confused but never gets any play. The live version of this song from Madison Square Garden is almost 30 minutes long. Until fairly recently not many people reacted to it. But now I have seen more than a few people react to it so if you get blocked for this or any song, there are ways around the blocking. People often react to the much short, good but inferior 12 minute version from 1968. If you must react to a live version and you can find the time. Take my and everyone elses word for it. The 30 minute version is far superior but the shorter version is also pretty good. It's just that any 1968-69 footage, they are not a polished group yet and are really raw. Maybe I am old but I can't really see your list. But for me, it's a toss up between "Since I've Been Loving You and "Dazed." If they are even on that list. LOL. But literally ANY song from that concert is worth watching.
Heads up if your new to Pink Floyd? On the album The Dark Side of the Moon tracks transition directly into each other and themes follow. So if you pick a single track you can get a wierd sudden chop off! Best to do side A then B or at least let the next track start. Also the very first track "Speak to me" is a really short into to everything that will follow. Also well worth having lyrics to hand there's always something worth hearing in Roger Waters lyrics😉

Only got to see them live once. Absolutely the most incredible concert ever. The energy and power that flowed off of that stage was spellbinding. They were BETTER than any other band and still are BETTER.

The longest live version of 'D&C' that Zep ever played was on March, 27th, 1975 at the LA Forum. It's just over 45 minutes long, and it's fabulous!

I played bass, I always found keeping up with the middle section there during the solo that you were talking about kinda hard. Finger placement for me I think might have been an issue for me because I don't have long fingers, but also, it does take a lot of stamina to keep that up. There are a few songs that are like that, not just Zeppelin but mostly it's In My Time Of Dying that did me in. I don't known how they did that night after night for years.

Psychedelic? Try Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Some of the more mainstream songs you can handle are Lucky Man, From the Beginning, Still...You Turn Me On, Karn Evil 9: 1st Impression Part 2, Fanfare for the Common Man. Most of their other stuff is way experimental and admittedly pretentious but hey, you might like it.

If you want real psychedelic stuff, you would love the early Pink Floyd. Check out some of their much longer atmospheric tracks like 'Set the controls for the heart of the sun', 'Interstellar overdrive', 'Careful with that axe, Eugene' or 'Echoes'. If you want to stray into Prog Rock maybe some King Crimson or Gentle Giant if you want to be really challenged with experimental music which fuses many genres and will baffle and intrigue you.

You asked about psychedelic bands around this time . Here goes. Around this time, you had The Doors, Steppenwolf, Moody Blues, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Country Joe and the Fish, Jefferson Airplane, and several others who Did psychedelic experimental stuff. Probably easiest way is to suggest songs: Steppenwolf, Magic Carpet Ride. Country Joe, Sweet Lorraine. Hendrix…Are You Experienced. The Beatles, Within You and Without You. Cream, Tales of Brave Ulysses. Moody Blues……pretty much anything…great and first psychedelic prog band. The Doors….hell their whole vibe was darkly psychedelic…stoner stuff, but Riders on the Storm would be good. The mother of all psychedelic songs is by Iron Butterfly, called In-a-gadda-da-vida. THAT is a stoner trip. Finally, Pink Floyd was ( and perhaps still is) THE band to take a trip with……but their music as a whole is not defined as psychedelic. The closest would be the song/soundscape Echoes from their album Meddle. At least, these are the suggestions of a stoner from the 60’s and early 70’s.

@@SalvoG Pink Floyd will be your other massive discovery on this channel. Many many great bands you have to look forward to over the coming years, but I will bet you that Zeppelin snd Floyd will remain in your top five throughout. There’s just really no topping them , unless you go completely prog and get into those bands like Yes snd Rush. Floyd is really their own genre. Nothing like them before or since. And Floyd DEMANDS live shows because they deliberately went for visual as well as auditory impact.
Since you seem to be doing each album track by track, I think you will notice how diverse they start becoming once they start getting a little away from the blues. A real hidden gem on this album is the last track "How many more times." I personally think it's every bit as good as Dazed and Confused but never gets any play. The live version of this song from Madison Square Garden is almost 30 minutes long. Until fairly recently not many people reacted to it. But now I have seen more than a few people react to it so if you get blocked for this or any song, there are ways around the blocking. People often react to the much short, good but inferior 12 minute version from 1968. If you must react to a live version and you can find the time. Take my and everyone elses word for it. The 30 minute version is far superior but the shorter version is also pretty good. It's just that any 1968-69 footage, they are not a polished group yet and are really raw.
Maybe I am old but I can't really see your list. But for me, it's a toss up between "Since I've Been Loving You and "Dazed." If they are even on that list. LOL. But literally ANY song from that concert is worth watching.

On the album The Dark Side of the Moon tracks transition directly into each other and themes follow. So if you pick a single track you can get a wierd sudden chop off!
Best to do side A then B or at least let the next track start.
